For a while, it looked like Sunny actually might be winning. Her pile was certainly the biggest one. But once Barley Pop began to combine her little piles into a bigger one, it was clear that she had some serious catching up to do. So she put all the speed she had into it, flapping her tiny wings to give her a tailwind.
"Pots? Do you guys cook?" Sunny's last foray into the kitchen had been less than successful, but it had piqued her interest. "I don't suppose you've got any advice for how to... I dunno, how to not totally make a mess of everything?" Subtle, very subtle.

"Careful, you gonna destroy our piles with them wings!" Barley laughed and thought of the other's question for a moment while cleaning up more of the yard.
"My mama owns the bakery nearby, lots of pots and trays to wash at the end of the day." She paused."Well, if ya ask mah brother, he'll say I can't cook. He ain't..completely wrong, I can do simple things...like..breakfast things, but I ain't really good at cooking. I like making drinks, I got the patience for that."

A bit too late, Sunny noticed that she was whipping her pile into a tiny twister. She stopped abruptly with an "oops!" but still had to put in some extra work making sure it wasn't going to blow away like that again, while Barley Pop's pile continued to grow.
"Wow, that's really neat! Do you get to try all the yummy baked goods? That would be amazing." As usual, Sunny's stomach was doing the thinking for her. She couldn't help it if she was almost always hungry. And she didn't want to stop liking yummy food. That would just be silly!
The mention of breakfast piqued her interest, but before she could ask about it, drinks were mentioned, and that was even more interesting. "What kinda drinks? Like hot cocoa or iced tea or fruit punch or what?"

Poking Sunny's pile a few times with her rake, Barley went back to her own. "I get to eat some of it." She thought back to the big piece of double chocolate cake and her tummy gave a little growl.
"I can make those, but they don't interest me. If you want a good glass of punch, you should meet my friend Pink. She makes a mean fruity drink." Barley chuckled. "I go for stuff that's a bit more bitter, I got my hooves on a book to make beer." She grinned widely. "I got a batch setting right now."

"Beer?" Sunny looked perplexed. She'd never heard of beer, but it sounded interesting. If it was edible or drinkable, she would be up for trying anything once! Bitter foods weren't her favorites, but they could still be totally delicious.
It was getting harder and harder for Sunny to find leaves that hadn't been raked into a pile. She dashed around, picking up a few here and there and depositing them into her pile. It still wasn't quite as big as Barley Pop's, but she wouldn't stop until the game was over and one of them had been declared the winner.

"Yah, beer" Barley inspected her side of the yard, finding very little left. "It's a drink adults' like cause it got alcohol, but the beer I am making don't have any, so I can drink it."
She looked between their piles. "I think its a tie!"

"Ohhhhhhhhh." While beer was an unfamiliar word, alcohol was not. "If the one you makes doesn't have any alcohol, how come you make it? Is it yummy, even though it doesn't have any of that stuff?" She'd thought that grown-ups only liked it because of how it made them feel, not because of any sort of taste factor.
The piles were finally finished. Sunny looked at Barley Pop, then giggled. "Nah, I think it's pretty easy to see that you won! And that's A-OK with me!" She paused. "Unless I have to clean something else all by myself now. 'Cause if that's how it's going to be, we totally tied."

"I don't know if its yummy, I never had it before, but if you can make it without the alcohol stuff, then someone has to like it that way." It seemed the only logical explanation to her.
Barley nearly topple over laughing at Sunny's exclamation. Grinning, she gave her a light bump with her rear. "We are tied, me thinks. Now, lets go inside." She started towards the stable, she decided since the other had been generous enough to help with the work, then she deserve part of the unknow reward of chocolate cake. "Ya earn yerself a piece of the bestest chocolate cake there has ever exist!"

Sunny thought about that for a moment, and then nodded her agreement. It made sense to her! "Once it's done, can I try some maybe? I bet if you're making it, it'll be really yummy, B-P. Oh, Beep! I like that one! It's so catchy, huh Beep?"
It was a bit of a relief to be finished with the task at hand. Not that Sunny minded helping- it had gone quickly and turned out to be fun- but she had places to go, food to consume. More than she had expected. "Oh! B-but I didn't help just so you'd give me anything," she protested. It was a bit hard to hear her voice over the sound of her stomach rumbling.

"If it's any good, I'll make sure to get ya a bottle." Barley open the door to the house and blinked. "That makes me sound like a car or something."
Raising an eyebrow in amusement, she grinned. "Well, I got a very big piece of cake, and I ain't eating all alone, so ya gonna come in and help me with it."

"Oh, thanks!" Cake and beer? This day couldn't get any better. Except it did, because a new friend came with the goodies. "I guess it does- but you're like an extra cool care, Beeps!" So that clearly made everything okay.
For a moment, Sunny considered protesting some more. This really wasn't what she'd had in mind when she stopped by. But she couldn't really turn down cake, especially when she'd worked up an appetite, and it was on offer from a new friend. "Well, in that case, I'll simply have to join you, Beepsy!" That said, she left the rake on top of her pile and followed Barley Pop in, already tasting the fruits of her labors. Or the chocolates, as the case may be.
