Be cool, Midnight! Be cool!
He kept repeating the phrase to himself, over and over again, like a mantra, as the beetle crawled ever closer and he found himself unable to move. What would C.C. think? That he was a big fat wimp, that's what. Midnight Snack slid his eyes over to her, finding her looking intently at the berry bush but also not picking any berries.
Maybe she hadn't noticed it? Or maybe she was doing like he was, and purposefully trying NOT to notice it...
As he thought, the beetle seemed to get tired of its place in the bush, and, to Midnight's horror, JUMPED OFF THE BRANCH, hurtling near him and C.C.
"YIKES!" Midnight heard himself yelp, jumping backwards and flapping his wings to hover a few feet off the ground. He snatched C.C. as he did so, pulling her away from the general area, more of a reflex than anything else. The beetle, meanwhile, harmlessly jumped into another part of the bush and began making a snack of another berry.
As he noticed what he did, flapping there in the air, Midnight Snack's face colored a deep red.

C.C. had let out a very loud, very high-pitched squeal when the bug decided to jump. A scream that only cut off when she found herself being hauled off the ground before she could had bolted all the way to her house.
"Eep." She squeak softly, staring up at Midnight. "...hi?"

Was it bad that he was glad she screamed? At least that'd mean she was similarly frightened by the huge black ugly thing's flight. Hopefully not because of his actions... Midnight Snack looked down, his face somewhat surprised at himself, a guilty smile growing over his face.
"Er... hiya..." he said, lowering them both and putting his new acquaintance back on the ground. "S-sorry about that..."
Time for the truth to come out. "I got a little freaked by that giant beetle, I guess..."

Letting a sigh of relief when she was put down, never having had all her hooves off the ground unless by her own choice. She gave him a shaky smile at his confession, and for a moment she thought of lying and saying she only startled by the bug's sudden appearance, but she decided against it.
After all, Midnight had gotten her away from the beetle. "I did too..." She shivered a bit. "Giant? It was monstrous!"

Midnight gave a sigh of relief as C.C. spoke. He eyed the berry bush where the beetle had skittered away and was now safely out of sight. "I'm... really glad to hear you say that. I thought it was just me!"

"No, it was freaking me out too!" She was glad to find out the other had been scared too, but now she was eyeing the bushes suspiciously. She gave Midnight a kiss on the cheek before quickly snatching up her basket. "Come on, let's get out of here before it comes back with reinforcements!"

Midnight's face popped into an expression of surprise at the sudden kiss, and then melted into a goofy smile. He picked up his basket and followed C.C. quickly. "Yeah -- I'm with you!"
