"I'll bring her back soon" he chirped as Asoth, with a mental nudge, launched himself in the air quickly. M'lan didn't say it but he kind of liked Tanya's arms around his waist, he WOULDN'T say it either, they barely knew each other really but he did smile. "And keep me from having a legitimate excuse for being in the kitchens?... HA!" he laughed "nah, i'll come help, teamwork and all that" he chuckled but his face grew grave a little as she mentioned flights. He didn't like to talk about them, it made him feel uncomfortable a little. Of course, being raised in the weyr left him open minded about relationships but it didn't mean he liked it for himself. Plus it was always awkward, no matter how you were raised, to wake with a virtual stranger in your bed. Thankfully, Asoth's showing off usually meant he didn't catch the green he chased which lessened the effect on M'lan compared to the riders of the mating pair, often he managed to just try and lock himself away and try and sleep.
He decided to ignore that comment for the moment, getting the feeling it wouldn't be a good idea to talk about really, "Nah, we get enough time off now our dragons have stopped growing, we rest between drill sessions otherwise we'd over work out dragons and wouldn't be ready for a Fall" he told her. "I hope you're hungry Tanya, i kind of packed way too much for just me" he chuckled.

"Well, it is lunchtime. I can certainly eat something." Tanya glanced down at the ground passing beneath them and watched, surprisingly silent, as Asoth settled by the lake again. Flying was always an exhilarating experience.
"I can help you set things up, though. Did you bring something to set everything up on?" Tanya asked as she attempted to undo the straps holding her in place behind him. It didn't work out as well as she could have hoped. "Um, I seem to be stuck." She grinned apologetically at him and pushed her hair behind one ear. "Which one do I pull on to undo these?"

M'lan smiled when she said she could use some food, perfect! He did like his food himself but it was true he'd packed more than he could eat. He didn't mind the rest of the short trip in silence, he never got tired of flying with Asoth.
They reached the lake, almost all too soon and he hopped off Asoth, grabbing the basket "Yep, all in the basket" he said, "well .. a smallish towel to put the basket on, we can always sit on the grass" he said, blushing a little. He set the basket down when she started to struggle a little, admitting she was a little stuck. "Here let me just...." he used Asoth's proffered foreleg to reach up to Tanya and tugged at a couple of straps "Just tug these, and .. there, you're free" he offered a hand to help her get down. "My fault, i totally overlooked telling you how to undo yourself back there, sorry Tanya" he apologised, he'd forgotten to remind her how the passenger straps worked.

"No, no, it's fine. It's been so hectic since we ran into each other, it's not a surprise we may have forgotten something. There." She smiled up at him-- really up at him, considering their height difference-- and smoothed her hands over the front of her skirt. "All set, see? Now, what did you pack for lunch? Anything you could borrow from the kitchens?"
Her eyes crinkled to show she was joking and then she continued right on as she gestured at the beach and took a few steps away from Asoth to find a good spot where they would have some room to eat. "I'm sure if you got your food from there it'll be good. Jennis is a difficult cook to work under, but she knows her way around a stove. How do the Weyrs always seem to find people like that? Lords know, the Holds don't always find such reliable folk for their kitchens. Kazvan had one when I was younger that my father said scathing things about. Thankfully, the Lord Holder took notice as well and replaced him."
Tanya stopped, surveying a patch of sand that looked about like any other on the lake's shore, and then glanced at the water to judge the distance between them. When she decided they wouldn't have to worry about being splashed if Asoth got in and out of the lake, she looked up at M'lan. "Is here all right?"

M'lan still felt bad, despite the fact Tanya made it clear it was ok that he'd forgotten to tell her how to get down. He smiled as he looked down at her "Yeaaah ... borrow.. not sure we can return anything, Jennis would have my hide" he chuckled.
He followed behind her with the basket as she picked out a good spot to sit. "HAHA" he laughed "I know, i was always in the kitchens as a Weyrbrat, still am in and out" he added, remembering that Tanya wasn't native to Trine, and wouldn't know the escapades he'd gotten up to in the kitchens. His face lighting up as he remembered his times in the kitchens "I don't know, i'm just glad we have good cooks, especially if i've flown a Fall, you get rather hungry.............or rather... I do" he said, caught between wanting to be amusing, and the sombre-ness of Threadfall. "Well if the higher-ups don't do anything about a bad head cook, it's not going to improve. I like to think, had i not Impressed Asoth, i'd have been working in the kitchens"
"Mine likes to cook, he is rather good, even the Headcook woman Jennis has said so!" the brown informed Tanya as he slid into the lake once M'lan removed his riding straps. "Thanks Asoth.... " M'lan rolled his eyes, amused but feining irritation. "here's just fine Tanya, wherever you like" he smiled at her.

Tanya glanced between the big Brown and his rider as Asoth took refuge in the lake following M'lan's retort. "Really? I didn't know. I guess if it's a habit of childhood, it's no wonder you're always about the kitchens in your spare time!" Tanya set the basket down and settled onto the beach, brushing dirt and sand off of her hands on the skirts of her dress. "I love cooking. I know it's a long way off, but I would love to be one of the assistants to the head cook some day. Not Headwoman or head cook, of course; I couldn't do a job that big. But one of the leaders of the kitchen once I have more experience? Absolutely."
Tanya looked off at Asoth in the lake briefly, watching firelizards-- potentially M'lan's-- swirling about his head. She returned her eyes to M'lan soon enough, and patted the ground next to her. "The basket can go here. Blanket?" She held out her hand for it, already moving into the next task.

M'lan chuckled. "Yeah, i'm sure she gets fed up with me but she's the reason i'm not bad in the kitchen, Faranth forbid i wrecked a dish" he laughed, waiting for her to finish picking the spot. "You could be whatever you wanted to be Tanya, perhaps we could try a dish together sometime?" he asked her.
M'lan's flits were indeed hovering about, fraternising with the local and GLOWING Gold and M'lan groaned "oh faranth..." he laughed as Zing hissed at Snow as the brown got too close to him. "Trust there to be a rising Gold....." he groaned again before his attention was drawn to Tanya "Oh, blanket, yes!" he said, running back to where he'd left the small carry sacks attached to Asoth's harness and grabbed the blanket. He hurried back to Tanya, handing her the ample blanket, plenty big enough to sit on and hold the basket of food too, one of the few things he knew were from the colder Weyrs, since they didn't really need too many large blankets here at Trine.

The look Tanya directed between M'lan and the flits buzzing near Asoth was startled. Not having a firelizard of her own, she had only heard about Flights and seen the starts of Green and Gold Flights before the females led their suitors away from the Weyr. She hadn't even considered that that might be what had put the almost entirely male group of flits in such a tizzy-- hadn't really noticed there weren't any Greens in the group either, for that matter. As M'lan went to retrieve the blanket, Tanya felt herself flushing with embarrassment at witnessing such an event with M'lan present (and having been the one to draw attention to it), and then blushed further as she realized M'lan, as a rider, had participated in Flights himself. She turned her face to the jungle, pointedly not looking at Asoth or the firelizards as she tried to compose herself somewhat. Unfortunately, that meant M'lan's return startled her, though she hoped the flush in her cheeks would be attributed to the heat.
Tanya smiled and took the blanket from M'lan as he offered it, happy to get up to take charge of shaking it out and setting up their area on the sand. M'lan must have been being modest earlier about not having a blanket large enough for the pair of them to sit on. This one, though it would be a bit cozy, was large enough for them both and the basket, too.
"You know, I'd love to make something with you. It's really difficult to have two people working on a single dish, though. Maybe we could do a full dinner instead? The fruit here at Southern makes for a fantastic fruit salad for dessert, and I'm sure we can think of a pair of dishes to make that would be suitable for a supper. What a wonderful idea, M'lan! We couldn't do it today, of course, but we could probably find an evening where we both have enough time to devote to cooking dinner. Do you cook with other people, your friends I mean, often?"
Tanya settled herself onto the blanket, sweeping her skirts into a comfortable position. She cracked open the basket without even considering that it was technically M'lan's lunch, and began taking things out and setting them near M'lan for him to sort out for them.

M'lan caught the blush but he pretended not to see it and smiled widely at her. He was practised at ignoring the lusty feelings from his flits so it didn't embarrass him TOO much. He waited for her to shake the blanket out before setting the basket down.
"Oh right..." he said, mildly crestfallen when she reminded him two people working on one dish would be a problem "A dinner sounds good.. or we could have a cook off?" he said, his eyes flashing amusement at the challenge. "No ... no i don't really cook with anyone except maybe the kitchen staff if they need an extra pair of hands for a feast or something, not many other riders that i know of are even interested in doing anything besides looking after their dragons... and training" he admitted.
Mlan grinned as she began taking things out of the blanket and opened his mouth to say something when......
SPLASH!
Asoth surged out of the lake, soaking the pair with a large wave of fresh water before stepping out and shaking the water off himself, all over them.
"ASOTH!" M'lan's face turned red but it wasn't embarrassment. "WHAT THE SHAFF DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING...... LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE!" he raged at the Brown, shaking water off his face as it dripped down. "Oh Faranth damn you Asoth.... Tanya.. are you alright?" he asked, turning away from the brown, fists clenched, shaking in anger at the dragon.
Asoth on the other hand, lifted his head and prance-trotted over to a nice cosy spot on the grass and rolled in it, very runner-like. He was very VERY amused and it wasn't like they were hurt, just wet. Being wet never bothered him, so what was M'lan's problem? "Cooling you both off, the little bronze cousin has caught the little gold cousin" he informed M'lan, his mental tone delighted. "M'lan rubbed his face, partly to remove water, partly because he was frustrated with Asoth "Well .. looks like Zing won't be back til nightfall" he said with a sigh.

Tanya blinked, mouth open out of shock, water dripping from her drenched hair down her face. She finally set down the now-wet loaf of bread and wiped her face down as a shaking, enraged M'lan laid into his dragon for the behavior.
"I thought... we would certainly be far enough from the lake to avoid something like that," she commented when M'lan addressed her, lifting a protective hand to her flat hair and then carefully wringing it out as M'lan turned back to his misbehaving dragon. She held in a sigh. So much for looking her best, then, but it wasn't like this was... Well, it was just a picnic with someone who was being nice. No harm done.
"No harm done," Tanya added, putting a smile on her face for when M'lan turned back to her. "I think our lunch may be... a bit wet, but some of it was still protected by the basket." Truthfully, it was protected only because her hand had accidentally jerked back and mostly closed it when the first of the deluge hit her, but no need to mention that. "Still plenty for two and the sun will dry us off as we eat, if you don't mind sitting in wet clothes for a bit. It's still warm, thankfully." She pushed her hair back from her face with both hands to keep the water from dripping into her face again. She blinked her gray eyes against the sun catching in them and redirected her gaze back down to sorting through the basket to protect them from the light. "The blanket is a bit wet for setting things on, but we can just pick out of the basket for now."

Mlan was embarassed. "Well when Asoth has a mind to do something..... " he sighed "I'm sorry though" he said "He ruined the food too?" he said, his face crestfallen, if somewhat comical looking. He flopped, defeated, as long as Tanya wasn't upset, he couldn't really stay angry, especially when the big brown was now rolling around on the ground like a puppy rolling in ...... yuck, no scratch that thought out of his head, like a yearling runner let loose in pasture for the first time.
He had the faint ghost of a smile on his face as he turned back to Tanya and the wet things, "Well if we lay anything non essential out on the grass it should dry out in no time" he said, pulling off his shirt, not ashamed at all that he was now semi naked in front of Tanya, well .. maybe a LITTLE self concious but in the same way a woman might be concerned that she looks good to someone she likes. I'll just put this over here, the blanket too" he smiled, weakly but his initial rage at his dragon pulling the water trick was fading quickly in the warm sun and the good company. "At least you saved some, thank goodness the basket was mostly waterproof....." his smile just a little wider.
