Mathias chuckled - he wouldn't even know the quote to be honest. He'd kinda skimmed and barely passed the actual "appreciation" portion of the major - focusing more on the actual practical applications more than anything else.

"Double meat cheeseburger, everything on it - hook me up with some bacon and a double order of the onion rings too."

He was hungry - and that would suffice for now, more an he'd just want to take a nap.

"Yeah, Air Force. Dad runs a Security Forces Squadron," he made a face at that. "He wanted me to go to the academy in Colorado Springs or enlist - so I became an artist instead." He smirked and shook his head.

"Naw, I'm not a local - We moved here the first time when I was in Junior High, but I really like the area so I figured I'd settle here."

Not to mention his other side job - but he didn't bring that up in mixed company.

It seemed impertinent to inquire too closely on the particulars of a statement like that- doing the exact opposite of what was desired by a parent. Stating it baldly seemed at once like an advertisement of boldness and pride in the action as well as a dare to say anything to the contrary about it. It was curious, still, if there was anything to it beyond rebellion. He preferred Mathias as the focus, not the father, and it was a less...accusatory? offensive? Well, less volatile subject perhaps. "So....do you like being an artist? Is it what you want to do?"

He was worried the answer was going to be in the uncertain haze of 'it just seemed like the thing to do' or neutrality of caring about the actual occupation compared to its value as a thorn in a authority figure's side.

"I've always felt drawn to art - painting in particular - there's a freedom about it. The ability to make whatever you want come alive on the canvas. The ability to do what I want to do when I paint - not being forced into a set pigeonhole." Mathias started as a reply to the other man's question. He didn't mind answering things - he was a pretty open book, had very little to hide.

Or that his mouth would let him hide.

"Do I want to do it my whole life? Probably not - I know it's not a lucrative gig unless you get super famous or something silly like that. I'm trying to edge my way into the Amateur Mixed Martial Arts circuit. One day I'd like to go pro if I could - I think I've got the chops for it." He added as an aside.

"But really? I think when it comes time for me to settle down and find a job or a career I'll know it when I see it. What about you? Is sculpting what you want to do in life? I know everybody is doing the art thing for their own reasons."

The first part was all well and good, sounded headstrong and rebellious. Especially words like 'pigeonhole.' Balking authority because it was authority, independence for the simple sake of it, not with actual reason or drive or necessity. As though each and all, the individual at core, were responsible and hale enough to choose all for themselves and their best interests. That usually ended up in self destruction rather fast. "Objectivism, much?"

"I do want to be a sculptor. i don't expect to make a living at it, there isn't much of one to be made anymore in public works where I would want to be. Mostly just toys, maquettes, art sculpts for comic book action heroes...entertainment industry stuff. Enough money to eat and keep a roof over my head is really all my goal. Learning, with the right books, can be mostly free, and I find enriching. Food for the mind, for the soul, more than the body. But I guess that shows in comparisons. You look....fit. "

"You could probably make extra modelling for the figure drawing classes. I heard one of the teachers mention its 9 an hour if you can stand being still so long. 12 an hour for the full nude classes. They usually go through a local agency, though."

Mathias snorted and raised a brow at Quenton. "Objectivism? Do I look like an avid reader of Ayn Rand? Well to be fair, I read Atlas Shrugged... Once." He made a slight shrug with his shoulders.

"To be fair - Objectivism isn't any worse than any other ism out there. It's more reasonable than communism or fascism that's for sure. I won't say that it works - because none of them really do." His fingers drummed on the table for a moment as he thought about what he was going to follow that up with.

"I don't see myself as an Objectivist - mainly because I don't think any man can truly survive purely by the sweat of his own brow. You can't have a world in which a working class - a lesser class - doesn't exist. That has always been my problem with Rand's view of the world when she starts parading the Objectivist pony. She believed that a man could live purely by his own merits and not have to rely on the work of others in order to succeed. Yet in Atlas Shrugged - all of her characters wouldn't have been where they were without the workers who worked for them. You need a labor force - you can have every Henry Ford in the world - but without someone to man the factories, well... Ain't gonna have you a Model T."

Pushing away his mental soapbox required more effort than he really wanted to expend, but he knew that this conversation was going down a dangerous path - a path that would end in a very loud and boisterous argument that he really didn't want to have right now.

"Fit... Hah - yeah, you could say that. I work out before and after I go to classes. Gotta stay in shape if you want to stay in the ring you know? As far as modeling... yeah, no - I can't sit still that long - I'd lose my mind."

"To be honest, I don't expect anyone to be any sort of reader much anymore. But a person doesn't have to read specifically Rand's works to seem to share opinion on philosophies. Or to at least seem to draw some similar conclusions and draw some ideas from the general to create their own ideological stance, if not full blown philosophy. There's been plenty of post-humus discussion from other sources you may have come across, " Quenton perked, hearing the other get lively and actually seem to engage. Then frowned when he seemed to deliberately back and change subject. "Rand was the original and often most famous and available though, it's true. So....more of a general ...liberalism? Or did you have some other ethical branch you preferred?"

"I suppose painting doesn't count as being still because you get to be moving the brush and palette about? " Sad to hear really. While Quenton didn't mind, and applauded, the practice of many different body types in the classes, the models he'd all had in his sessions were everything except a youthful, muscular fit- thin, fat, old, childish, Ruben-esque, lanky, knobbly. "Let me know if you ever go in for it."

Was he... hitting on him?

No - no, Mathias shook his head slowly and erased the thought from his mind. He was taking the other man's interest in his thoughts on being a model himself far too personally.

"I prefer not to be labeled, actually," Mathias said with a grin, leaning forward and tapping the other man right between the eyes a few times. "Labels are the sign of being trapped in the oppressive regime of our 'betters.' They keep you locked into this state of mind of maintaining the status quo and never attempting to explore thoughts and ideas that might be considered... Avantgarde."

Leaning back a bit, he watched the other man for a moment before he continued. "It may be because I grew up in a military household - but I just dislike feeling like I'm confined to any one... THING."

Listening to banter back was one thing, and a glad one, having someone lean over the table and tap you was another completely, and Quenton leaned away before more than one tap could land, lifting a hand warding and furrowing his brows, "That gesture is at once dismissive, condescending and rude. Please don't."

Whether it was meant as that much, he could hardly say. They'd only just met. But a couple hundred years of occidental convention had clearly defined social taboos and norms, and that sort of bodily contact was among that. Maybe Mathias did think so little of people, even on first meeting and when doing him a favor. Point taken. "Labels on one hand yes, categorization however does serve the purpose of ease of organization and condensing of knowledge for a society who's discoveries and leaps in knowledge over the last couple of centuries dwarf those of the prior thousand years. "

"Far be it from me to confine anyone to any one thing. I prefer variety myself. We expand ourselves by learning more, pushing more, thinking more. We are our own masterpieces. " However heartfelt, the emotion behind them was muted by the faux pas and subsequent terseness.

"Whoa, s**t dude, sorry..." Mathias hadn't realized that it would have set the guy off doing that. He wasn't the most tactful or polite person really once you got to know him you came to find that he was actually a raging assclown.

He made a show of placing his hands on the table to as to not accidentally set off the guy who was by all rights feeding him. He may not be the nicest of people really - but he understood that when people were pissy they tended to recant on things.

"Perfection is not when there is nothing left to add - only when there is nothing left to take away," Mathias nodded, leaning back a little in the chair. He was hoping he could get the other guy to at least crack a smile or relax - it wasn't like he had meant to piss him off.

An apology was really all it needed...it seemed, from Mathias reaction, to have been innocently enacted. Maybe the painter was just a really physical guy in general and talked more with touch than just with words. He'd have to start paying closer attention to how much Mathias moved or emoted with his hands and if it was as bad as stereotype of Greek-decended people.

"So are you part of a local outfit...training club, or gym or anything? I've honestly not heard a great deal about the MMA other than what play it gets on television with the UFC. Or occasionally when someone gushes here or there about some fighter getting a bit part in a bad movie like Scorpion King 2. I'm out of the loop on all things ....sports except for gathering anatomy reference. "

"You know, in case it wasn't obvious with my stone-cutter only physique of amazing, or the rocking fluorescent-light tan I have going on from the studio hours."

"Oh, I just go to one of the local gyms, yeah - I'm not on any official circuit yet, you really have to dedicate yourself and pretty much spend ALL day training if you even want to break into the amateur circuit. There's a little bit of money to be made there if you pick up a sponsorship from a gym or something, but trying to break into the pro circuit takes years." He shrugged his shoulders a bit when Quenton spoke about his own physique.

"Actually you don't look that bad, I've dated a few girls that were more into the starving artist - no time to go to the gym - looking guys... Which is usually why we stopped dating - hah," He wasn't about to flex at the table - that was just corny as hell but Mathias still shook his head, started to reach his hand across the table and thought better of it, placing it back down.

This guy liked his personal space, right, see he can be taught! He chuckles at the other guy, tapping the table with a knuckle for a moment. "But if you'd like to get into a little better shape, I go to the gym twice a day, so I could easily get you started on something that wouldn't kill you."

He can be taught!

"It's hard enough to find time for sleep, maybe I should count my blessings I don't have to worry about a relationship. " Quenton's smile returned, seeing the other nearly reach across the table and then think better of it. Okay, he really is JUST that physical. It's how he interacts. But he can understand politeness to.

"Well, I'll try anything once, adn maybe it would get you a couple laughs. So if you have an hour to show me the ropes sometime, I'll gladly take you up on it. I've never done anything in a gym except make faces at the machines. I hear they don't bite, but who *really* knows."

The food arrived for them to both happily start shoveling under the auspice of conversation, so Quenton politely nodded to the plates in front of them, "Let's not let it get cold."

Mathias nodded, and chuckled a bit looking at the food. "Yes, that would be tragic."

He fell upon the plate much like a lion falls upon an injured antelope. It wasn't that he had bad table manners - hardly - he just ate fast. He also wasn't one to talk with his mouth full either, at least, not unless there was something really important needed to be said.

At the moment there really wasn't anything vital to say, so he stuck to tucking in. In probably what was close to a world record, his plate was clean of all but a few tiny morsels that had fallen by the wayside, and those were soon hunted down an eaten, till only a greasy plate remained.

Leaning back in his chair a little, Mathias sighed contently and wiped the corners of his mouth with a napkin. "That was good - thank you for suggesting this place."

'Military family', Mathias had said. That was something of a prelude, or at least Quenton thought now that he should have taken it as such, watching the guy eat. It was like the restaurant was a canteen and he had been told he had the soldierly 6 minutes to finish his food before he was expected to be back in rank.

Quenton chewed his own burger thoughtfully, glad he had chosen no fries as it meant that there wasn't too much of a wait while between Mathias' return to swallowing oxygen instead of potato and when he himself was done eating instead of inhaling. "I'm glad you.....could taste it?"

But it was meant jokingly, Quenton was smiling around his straw after he said it. "With some calories to work with, and this breather, maybe you'll have some fresh eyes on that painting. "

He took the black plastic folder on the edge of their table and put enough cash to cover the meal and the 20% tip.

Can end it with them heading back to the studio to work?

Smirking back in reply to the man's verbal prodding, Mathias shrugged his shoulders slightly and nodded. "Yep, made sure it scrapped my tongue a few times on the way down - can't always get a hole-in-one every shot you know?"

With that being said, he saw the man pay, and drumming his fingers on the table for a moment he nodded.

"Yeah, I think I have an idea of how I can make it work now - thanks for this," He made a mental note to get Quenton's phone number before the other man left the studio that night. He'd have to make hanging with him a habit - provided the other man felt mutually.

"Guess we should blow this pop-stand, eh?"
