Evan's sword almost arced in slow motion to Stormy, who once again felt like a deer caught in the headlights when something large loomed over her. Bare able to get a squeak out, her attempt to brace against the impact was pitiful, and the trainee crumpled like wet paper under the charge. the clang of metal on metal rang horribly in her ears as she fell to the ground, scrambling to grab the greatsword and raise it in a pre-emptive move against more attacks. Patches had told her about how some hunters might get . . . caught up in the moment.

"Y-Yeah . . . like that," she muttered, eyes wide in a mixture of awe and envy. It wasn't fair to compare herself to a guy who had gotten marine training before coming to Deus, but . . . she couldn't help but feel some jealousy over how easily he handled both his weapon and his attack; Thane's usually ended up backfiring on her, and she couldn't help but wonder if that was her fault somehow. "And that's how, um, you go around hunter-ing," Stormy added with a shaky smile, trying to shrug off the small panic attack as quickly as she could. But she was going to just . . . stay on the ground for a moment.

< < He is strong, but lucky, > > Thane dismissed, itching to release his own attack but knowing the shield was far too weak to handle it. He sighed impatiently in her mind with the sound of bones cracking.

"S-So, um, good job! Yay, Herc~" She let the greatsword sag to the ground and clapped her hands. "Monster beware, 'cause he's gone from zero to hero! Well you weren't a zero first, but, um . . . uh . . . you know what I mean, right?"

Evan looked down in surprise at Stormy, holding Gir off to the side in an effort to make it clear that he wasn't going to attack. There was no honor in hitting someone while they were down, and he felt more than a little guilty that she had fallen in the first place. "Good to know," he replied. "At least now I can swing a sword around. Kind of." He was more than willing to attribute his sudden proficiency with a sword to beginner's luck; with as close as he and Stormy had been, it would have been harder not to hit her.

He unsummoned Gir and reached a offered a hand down to Stormy, grinning at her continued good cheer. "Yeah, yeah, I get it--and I have you to thank for teaching me how this all works. So, thanks." Evan still didn't believe himself to be the kind of hero she was making him out to be, but at least now he wouldn't be totally helpless his first time out. Probably. Maybe.

"Kind of". Yeah. Letting the greatsword desummon back into a ring, she took Evan's hand with a wincing smile and stumbled back to her feet. Her body still panged where the stronger impacts had gone, and though the Fear shield had taken the brunt of the sword, her arms ached from trying to fend off his sword, especially at the very end. Nevertheless, Stormy couldn't help but beam in response to his grin, his good cheer infecting her like a candle to a person in the cold.

"Me? Oh no, Mr. Hercules, I was just a good practice dummy," she told Evan as a matter of factly and with a nod to herself. "I bet you were already a cool Marine anyway. Now all you have to do is survive some missions, get some runic weapons, and hope you impress people!" Because it was obviously that simple. "Oh, and make friends. That's important too! Have you talked with other sun people?"

Evan kept hold of Stormy's hand until he was sure she wasn't going to fall right back down. "Aw, you were the best practice dummy--hit me back a few good ones and everything," he teased. His grin froze at her speculation of his coolness as a Marine. He missed the Corps, missed the easy camaraderie, missed knowing where he stood and exactly what his objectives were. Now he kind of felt like the new kid in school, lost and alone and not sure how anything worked.

/Not alone,/ Gir reminded him sleepily. /Never alone. You'll learn./

"I was pretty all right," he admitted eventually. "What are runic weapons? Do they involve more voices in my head?" Gir growled disapprovingly, possessive of his hunter and unwilling to share. "And I don't think I've met any other Suns. I've been trying to get a handle on this Hunter business. Actually, I think you might be the only person aside from Ami I've had an actual conversation with, and that was only because she was there when I woke up."

Thane bristled at anything of his being called a dummy, but Stormy just giggled. "I'd hope so, Mr. Herc, since I've been here a while! Lookie." She swung his hand a little, much like a young girl would, and smiled. "One thing at a time then. Runics are little things we can bring on missions, but they're man-made. I think. no voices at least! But you gotta do these training courses to get clearance for them. So how about I show you some and we can work from there? Or you could try them out on your own, up to you. If you do Life's special one, be careful: Super Jenga is super hard and they have piranhas and everything, no lie!"

Stormy swore she could still feel the needles poking her body with holes.

The trainee lit up at the mention of the sour Life hunter. "Oh, Cap'n woke you? Yay, so you know her already~ She's super smart. Okay, so after the training courses I can show you the beach, or we could go find the cafeteria and eat, or I could show the library--that's where Cap'n works me until I can't remember what's left or right~--or . . ." And Stormy would continue to babble on happily, tugging at Evan's wrist like a child ready to show their parent something exciting.

Exciting and, well, a little dangerous.
