There was a four-way intersection, and Nahm looked down each of the other three paths before picking the one that looked darkest. Maybe it would lead further in.
It didn't. It led to a pit trap. The intersection had sprouted several more paths when he got back to it. At least that was proof enough that the maze was changing when he wasn't looking.

Undeads were super jacking unhelpful, Nahm thought as he kicked a last asp off his leg and back into the pit he'd just climbed out of. He rubbed at the fang marks. If the snakes had at least had the courtesy to be living flesh, he might be able to see where they were more easily by the glow of warmth. As it was, their bodies matched the ambient temperature, and he was going to have to spend some time stitching and taping holes out of his pants when he got back.

The end of the labyrinth took Nahm by surprise, and he almost tripped over himself as the corridor opened out into a larger, longer space that stretched away into dimness. Sarcophagi lined the walls. Nahm couldn't tell if any of them were inhabited, because jackin' undead. Otherwise, it kind of reminded him of one of the larger catacombs at home. He folded himself down to sit crosslegged on the floor at the foot of a pillar, after checking the floor where he intended to sit, just in case there was a trap trigger there. Amphi hadn't made it here yet, and he could use a rest. He'd just wait for the mermaid here and not do anything. Stamina: 7/24 Nyxtsuki Moon gawd that stamina score. GOOD LUCK

It was getting really tiring that the walls seemed to never end.
Really tiring. And she missed the presence of Nahm dearly. Poor lost Nahm.
Back in Nahm...

The only way to comfort herself in the lonely journey was to sing...and since it helped drown the sounds of the hissing snakes out, that's just what the mermaid did.Quote: Amphi: 50/50 Stamina: 15/25 Fear: Y3 Chill, Y2 GC Y1 Chill

THE SONG SHE IS SINGING....
"Upon one summer's morning I carefully did stray Down by the Walls of Wapping Where I met a sailor gay.
Conversing with a young lass Who seem'd to be in pain, Saying, William, when you go I fear you'll ne'er return again.
My heart is pierced by Cupid I disdain all glittering gold There is nothing can console me But my jolly sailor bold.
His hair it hangs in ringlets His eyes as black as coal My happiness attend him Wherever he may go.
From Tower Hill to Blackwall I'll wander, weep and moan All for my jolly sailor Until he sails home.
My heart is pierced by Cupid I disdain all glittering gold There is nothing can console me But my jolly sailor bold."
Amphi was surprised as she finished the note on the song, looking at the cross legged Nahm on the floor. Going over to him, she laid both of her hands on his shoulders and leaned down.
"There is nothing that can console me but my Jolly sailor bold~" Finally, she had made it. "Sorry....to have taken so long Nahm."Quote: Amphi: 50/50 Stamina: 14/25 Fear: Y3 Chill, Y2 GC Y1 Chill

Nahm heard the singing before he saw Amphi. She had a nice voice, he mused, and listened as her voice grew nearer. When she emerged from the maze and came over to sing the last line directly at him, he gave her a big grin. "You have a fine - voice, Amphi." The pause was tiny but present.
He got up, dusting his seat off, and stretched. "Jackin' maze changes. Not your fault it didn't spit you out sooner. Shall we?" He linked his fingers behind his head and started off down the hallway, strolling as if he didn't have a care in the world. He headed straight down the center of the path in the pool of water when he found it.
The undead naga that inhabited the pool took exception to his confidence, and she was fast. Nahm had no time to dodge, and her strike knocked him flat on his butt. It took an undignified scramble to get back off the bridge and away from the pool, and he hissed with pain and irritation as he examined the sizable, deep puncture wounds in his leg.

It occurred to him, belatedly, that he should have dashed the other way, because getting to the other side was still going to require crossing the pool. Nahm briefly considered trying to cross the water in the hope that the naga would be waiting by the path, then threw that idea out. Who knew how deep it was? At any rate, moving through water was slower than running across dry ground - at least for him. Amphi might be able to dodge the naga in the water, but he wasn't likely to be able to.
He took a breath, then ran for it. He had almost reached the other end when the powerful strike threw him forward, and he yelped at the searing pain, but this time when the naga let him go he kept going.

He turned to call out, "Watch out for the - " and as he moved, something sank slightly under his foot, making a faint click. A thick green gas came fountaining upwards, shooting into his nose and mouth despite his best efforts to hold his breath, and every muscle in his body locked up stiff, leaving him frozen still as a statue.

The gas subsided slowly, leaving a nasty, moldy taste in his mouth and throat, and he coughed several times, then moved cautiously to step off the trap and towards a more solid-looking spot.
The more solid-looking spot clicked softly and produced another cloud of gas, once again locking him into place without even enough time to yell THIS IS BULLSHIT.

When the gas ebbed away again, Nahm moved carefully, sliding his feet forward before putting his full weight on any one tile. No further toxic clouds erupted, though as he made progress, a rotting-meat smell began to rise in a miasma around him. It reminded him that he hadn't had lunch, and he sighed wistfully and looked back to see how far along Amphi was. HP: 7.5/30 Roll: 5/5

The floor trembled slightly, and a grinding sound alerted Nahm that he couldn't wait any longer for Amphi to join him. He grimaced and shot a glance around the room. Nothing stood out as exceptional, nothing that called to him the way the books had said an artifact would, and he growled with frustration and scooped up a shining coin. There was a dizzying, disorienting swirl, and when his head cleared and his vision steadied again, he found that he was once again in the sand-drifted hall where they'd begun their exploration. "Jackdammit!" he yelled, and went to throw the coin, only to discover that it had vanished from his hand.
