"You can't?" Robert quirked his head, surprised at her answer. "It wasn't hard for me. I know the a*****e who found me, because he used his goddamn gay a** scythe on me. It was Caelius." He rolled his eyes. "Smacked me with it, hard, right across the head. ********' ridiculous." He'd never seen the Death Leads face that day, but Cael did not seem entirely interested in keeping himself a secret. That scythe was a part of every horrible memory Robert had of his first days as a hunter - and even before. Caelius waved it around like it was his manhood, out for show. "And don't get me started on him and that weapon." Robert had far too much personal experience with the confusing world that was Caelius' mind. But Maddie's words lit up his face in a smile. Not only was he glad to hear she was happy, but he was so relieved to know she still thought of Phoenix as her family - there were times, nowadays, when he had started to feel like he was the only one. Not always, just every once in a while.. when boundaries grew thin, and people moved on. That was life, but that didn't mean he was happy about it. "No matter what happens." He repeated, squeezing her in a loving hug.

She chuckled, returning the hug; she was definitely comfortable with physical affection, as far as Robert or even Jordan went. They were like brothers, warm and safe. "You poor b*****d," she added, at the mention of Caelius. "That's one hell of a welcome." She tried to place Caelius in the Starbucks where she'd met her 'recruiter', and failed. Somehow she just couldn't imagine the Death lead ordering a caramel machiatto. Though the thought of Caelius made her sigh. "Hey. Um... changing the subject a little, but. How was your promotion mission? What was it like? I think... mine's going to be coming up pretty soon. I hope, anyway."

"BAAAHAHAHAHA! Are you really?" He patted her back to congratulate her, perhaps a little too hard for her small frame. "THAT'S MY GIRL! All.. growin' up and gettin' ready to kick Caelius out of his position. ******** yeah." He wiped away a single invisible tear. "My promo wasn't too bad. Clarice trollin' me a lot. What's new? I got to be Santa for a while. Kids, man." He let out a long, wistful sigh. "God, sometimes I hate being a hunter. I ******** hate it."

Madison winced under the solidity of his back-patting. "Oh no. I'm leaving that s**t to, I dunno, Gale or somebody. I don't want the division. Caelius can keep it. I just want the freedom to do some better s**t than I'm doing now, really." Wait. "... Santa?"

"Yeah." Robert rolled his eyes. "You heard me. She made me dress up and play mall Santa. Don't ask me why Clarice does the things she does, ok? Because the answer is either liquor, boredom, or something I just don't want to know. So I don't ask questions, and sometimes, I dress up like Santa for her." He paused, there, because it sounded a little dirty, but eventually shrugged. "At least she don't got me dressing up like a fireman." lizbot i just felt you would enjoy this

"I'd say 'kinky', except no," Madison said, making a face. "Not going there. Not with Santa." The 'fireman' note apparently didn't mean anything to her, because she just kept going. "Does she have you do this often?"

Robert laughed sharply at the idea of Clarice's games being kinky, and nodded in agreement. "Ah, no, thankfully. It was just for my promo. Honestly, she's mostly got me doing grunt work - but that's what I'm good at. I like it. If that means I gotta do weird a** s**t every once in a while... ehhhh." He shrugged. "It could be worse!" Caelius, for example, was worse. "But I really don't know what you'll be doin'. I remember when he had Reine on her promo.. she did that run, with the shadowlings. Brought me along, though I don't know why. It seemed real basic - dangerous as hell, but what isn't?"

Madison nodded, slowly. "Right... well, I guess there isn't really anything I can be sure to expect," she said, with a sigh. "Other than suffering. So."
