CandidateMaster Assistant Wykla
She felt bad for the gold, her rider, and the eggs. While she and Kameth had enjoyed the storm to a point, it had been utterly annoying in the damage it had done to the Weyr. The weyrs and buildings they could rebuild as they’d done before. But the Hatching Sands. That was something else entirely. It was almost a sacrilege and annoyed Wykla the most of it all. The poor dragon had her clutch confined to a tiny patch of dry Sands.

Teen and dragon had waited for the candidates to gather in front of the Sands. It was uncertain what temper Cepheith would be in. Wykla wasn’t sure how the touching would go. She would do her best to prepare the candidates for what they possibly faced. Finally a crowd of milling teens awaited her. Kameth eyed the candidates and crooned to quiet them.

“Alright boys and girls.” Wykla stepped forward, “this is your chance to get in and meet the eggs for this clutch. Some of you will Impress. Some of you won’t. I know the storm has upset things, but do your best to keep your feet out of the water.”

“Now candidates, you must wear your white robes and sandals; if not you miss your chance to touch. You’ll go in and bow to Cepheith and her rider. You anger her your off the Sands. Move among the eggs and don’t linger too long over any one. Feel free to ask any questions you have.” With her nod she moved aside to let them being entering.

(I welcome all interaction. Just quote me so I don't miss you.)

Candidate Thrarothar
It stuck in his throat that he was still here. Thrarothar couldn’t keep a grimace from his lips. He was the one who should have had a dragon in the last clutch. Not that puny little mongrel. None of the dragons from puny gold’s clutch had found him, and he’d been stuck going after those annoying crimson’s eggs. Well now here was his chance. He wouldn’t fail this time.

He looked up as a blue dragon crooned next to a woman. This was almost as annoying, being told what to do by her. The next grimace was the thought of wading through the water to even reach the eggs. Thrarothar flashed a glance at the closest candidates. Maybe he’d let them go first to test the queen’s temper.

Finally it was time and he moved in with the crowd. Head held high despite the water sloshing around his ankles. Up on the sands he paused and gave a bow to the queen. His hopes rested on her eggs that one was for him. It’s largest egg drew him first. Thrarothar approached Discreet Egg first. He laid his hand upon its shell. Something was definitely there, analyzing him, yet giving nothing. With nothing being exchanged, he soon moved on to Guardian Egg. His hand brushed the shell and almost immediately jerked back. What did it mean he lacked honour?

Thrarothar huffed and walked on. Well that egg was stuck up. He eyed his next choice. Rolly Polly had a bit of an odd shape. He patted the egg. What could it be wondering about already? They’d just wait to find out. From one weird one to another. As he approached Easily Agitated it started a spate of violent wiggling. It couldn’t be hatching now? He had to time it carefully lest he accidently slap the egg. Thrarothar held his hand out and let the egg come to it. The contact was brief. Barely a few seconds. He didn’t sense much from it either, and soon moved on.

The next egg packed a mental wallop. He wasn’t sure if Territorial Egg was serious or not. He just wanted to find his dragon and show up that little snob. It probably wasn’t Territorial. Fine he could get the hint. The man moved along and found himself facing Vibrant Egg. Well this was interesting. He gave it a second quick pat and a smile. Pride was a good thing. So far his hopes were pinned here.

Becka jumped a little as she was spoken to, she'd been watching the eggs and not what else was going on. "Oh! Cai" she replied, looking for the dragon and smiled. "Oh no i'm just looking, i'll be down on the sands anyway with the healers so it doesn't matter if i don't make it official" She smiled again and turned her attention to the eggs again "If my dragon is there i'll find me but if it's not i still have Healing" she looked back at Cai "Plus i don't think i'd pull off the candidate robes" she grinned, just a little, not usual Becka behaviour but the sunny days made her feel good despite the worry over the eggs and the waterlogged Sands.

Narisa and Cepheith

She was not a happy dragon right now. The usual watery blue color of her eyes had not been witnessed - except by Narisa on a few rare occasions - since she'd had her clutch. Whirling crimson was a constant flash in her gaze, and a low rumble at anything and everything. The poor Candidates approaching her eggs would receive a harsh look, wings unfurling before settling again, and perhaps a lashing tail.

This is not acceptable. She hissed at her rider. And not for the first time today.

Narisa just gently rubbed her dragon's snout when she finally lowered it, giving Wykla a grateful smile for preparing the Candidates. "I know, my heart." She said sympathetically. "It's not the most ideal of... situations. But you're clutch is gleaming and beautiful. And we have many fine Candidates for them to choose from." Unlike her dragon, Narisa was in a much more pleasant mood, if a little weary. She smiled warmly to all of them, encouraging the Candidates to approach and touch the eggs. Cepheith wouldn't do anything to them. Just grump. And look intimidating.

But what if the waters reach my eggs! Cepheith growled, eyes narrowing to watch several of the Candidates closely.

Then we'll find someplace for them. Stop fretting! You're going to scare all the Candidates away. She didn't really think that would be the case. Trine definitely had some sturdy people - and dragons - calling it home.

Huffing, Cepheith inched her head closer to a few of the eggs, nudging them to be sure they got the most warmth from the sands. She didn't really take into account there might be a Candidate or two that would be surprised by the sudden large dragon head appearing beside them. Narisa smacked her leg with a sigh, and the Gold curled back against herself to continue watching.

Thank you, Rynsemeth. Though I am quite tired of the water. She replied to the Black dragon with mild irritation, though Miath did receive a slightly less irritated croon back in thanks.

((Feel free to assume your Candidate was by one of the eggs Ceph nudged!))

Cai

Miath trailed after Rynsemth, craining her neck to watched the Candidates among the eggs as she climbed after him. Caimine?

I'm making smalltalk. I'll be up in a bit.

Cai's unknowing echo of Rynsemth's words reassured Miath and the dragon settled in calmly next to Rynsemth, her body just lightly touching his. It will be an excuse to get ours to wash us though. All this mud.

Cai managed a bit of a smile and an eyeroll. "Well I can't disagree with that. At least you want it." Unlike herself. Well, she hadn't wanted to become a rider, still didn't want it, but she loved Miath. More than she was comfortable with. Part of that might be why she kept the crimson at a distance.

Invite her up? Wen has a female friend with him.

A female friend? Cai wasn't familiar with Wen spending time with women, in fact she had assumed the exact opposite from him. "I'm going up to sit with Miath and Rynsemth, if you're not going to Touch the eggs you can join us. Miath loves company." Cai extended the dragons invitation.

[Shenja] (Territorial)

The storm had screwed up a whole lot of things. Their caravan had been due to leave, but storms were storms, and they had stayed at the weyr a day longer. They had left that very morning, and Shenja missed them already, but they had been Searched and while normally Shenja would have found a way out of it, Didi wanted to stand for some obscure reason having to do with honor and duty. Shenja didn't give a rat's a** about those things, but he did care about Diedre. She was staying, so he was staying, if only to look out for her... because someone needed to.
Well! Egg time. He looked at his sister, a big grin on his face. He'd have fun, whether he wanted to be here or not. Soggy shoes and sand or not.
"Well, Didi! This is going to be great!" his smile faltered.
Was she... Shaking?
"Didi... Are you scared? Of dragons?" huh. Something new.
"C'mon, they're just eggs! See?" he went over to the territorial egg and touched it.

BAM, It was like a mental punch to the face. Not something he had been expecting, or ever expected in his life. He jumped back.
"Whoa..." That had been... Something. He put his hand back, not wanting to scare his sister. "I guess theres actually a... you in there, huh?" it was pretty amazing to feel the slightly indignant growl. Adventure? Yeah! He loved adventure! You found all the interesting things when you wandered away from the beaten path. After adjusting to the sense of communing with a creature, he pulled back and gave his sister the most winning smile he had.
"See, not so bad."

[Diedre](Guardian, Easily Agitated, Rolly poly)
"Shenja! No!" She rushed to her brother to pull him away.
"You idiot, you're supposed to bow to the queen first!" holding his hand, she bowed. Ritual and tradition were there for a Reason, and she had no desire to be thrown off the sands because her little brother was being impulsive.
"I'm sorry about him." she said, in case anybody was listening or cared, "He won't do that again" She gave him a look before releasing his hand.
"And I'm not scared."
Actually, she was. Pretty scared, actually. What would she find here? Would she become a rider? Would she be one of the protectors of Pern? Would she soar the skies and fight thread? Or would she rejoin her caravan when it returned? It would mean a lot of things if she Impressed... Tentatively, almost fearfully, she reached a hand to the Guardian egg...

The touch of another mind against her own was startling, but it was a calm mind. Perhaps Diedre was fortunate in that her first egg was so... calm. She let her hand rest on it for a time. Perhaps... this wouldn't be so bad?

Frowning she looked about the clutch. The Easily Agitated egg caught her eye. Emboldened by the guardian egg, she touched this one with a lot less reserve...

It seemed a bit wiggly, but she was disappointed. There was none of that mind-to-mind that she had been expecting.

Ah well. The odd shaped egg caught her eye as well. And she touched it, noticing that Shenja was watching her.

The Rolly polly egg said hi. That was surprising enough. Eggs saying hi like that... She had the sense that she was out of her depth, and drew back, needing a break.

Rynsemth agreed, content to soak up the sun and laze with Miath as their riders talked. Eventually talk, Miath's rider was chatting up a candidate. The black eyed the girl for a moment and ignored them. The black rumbled looking over the eggs.

Rynsemth rummaged through his rider's mind.

Vaail

Purple one next. Vaail left the Guardian egg and moved to the Antsy egg. He was rather fond of purple, knowing all too well the difficulties in obtaining the shade and admiring the wiggling and rocking the egg was doing. The eggs personality when touched was similar to it state, eager and wanting to meet the world. He pat the shell and moved on to its neighbor.

The Glowing egg wasn't as bright as the blue but he had a soft spot for red. It was difficult to achieve without poisonous ingredients and the egg was just so tiny. Vaail stroked it, smiling at the utter confidence and pride and the way the egg inspected his hands for grime. It sort of reminded him of a older more fun Nash.

Naanash moved on, giving the Territorial egg a quick touch but moved on from the violent shout in his mind. He had enough rash, head first types in his life, namely his twin and did not need his life long bond partner to be of the same cloth. He eyed the Vibrant egg unsure of the flashy coloration. He liked blue but it was bright and somewhat sparkly. A cautious touch revealed firm pride and a protectiveness? He froze, blinking slowly as the Queen appeared in his sight and nudged the egg to his left.

He never really stopped to consider how large dragons were. Right now, with the graceful golden head so close to him and those gem bright eyes whirling in red, Naanash had a admiring respect and a small drop of want. She was absolutely gorgeous, anger and all.

Shaft. Maybe his twin really was right about standing being a good thing. The egg under his hands seemed to be projecting and ack, he hadn't meant to be touching it still. Naanash removed his hands and wandered over to the Glowing egg, ignoring his twin and only giving half his attention to the tiny red egg.

[Shenja] (Rolly poly, Vibrant, Obnoxious)

"See? nothing to be scared of" he teased, having taken the being pulled and force-bowed rather well. He joined her at the rolly polly egg.

It felt deep. That was what he could say. Deep and bright and quiet. He wanted to chat with this one, have a talk about things. But he wasn't sure if he was allowed to. And besides, he wanted to go around and say hi to all the eggs, now that he knew that they could think back! Then he'd come back!

The bright colored shell caught his eye and he meandered over to put a hand on it.

Ooo! a lot of force here, not like the other egg, but... he liked the really strong sense of self here!
Oh but he had to go say hi to more of them! Like that one! He went right for the Obnoxious egg.

Touching it, he was overwhelmed by sudden excitement! After the initial burst, he responded in kind.
HI THERE! oh man he was excited too! Maybe there was something to this whole standing thing after all! He didn't want to take his hands off this egg! He didn't even think about it! It felt like talking, and he felt like talking, and this was great! He was so wrapped up in the egg's enthusiasm, playfulness and curiousity that he forgot about his (or just diedre's) concerns that he'd break the rules or something. Who cared about rules? He didn't even care that a great big golden head was nearby, thats how much fun he was suddenly having with this dragon egg.

[Diedre](Antsy)

Diedre gave shenja a look and decided to try one more egg.
But the antsy egg was too energetic and active for her. It made her feel tired. She drew back and decided to keep an eye on Shenja instead... who seemed to be occupied with one egg. She stood over him, making sure he wasn't doing any mischief...

Roan wiped his hands away as he went to the next few eggs, stopping by the Obnoxious egg and instantly rubbed at his head as he touched the shell. "Ouch... I'm sorry?" He apologized, who knew such a prescense could fill his mind? He rubbed the egg lightly, he wondered just what kind of dragon could have that power?

He moved on to the next egg, the largest, he wasn't sure if it was a queen egg or not with the brownish color but he moved towards it, placing his hand on it, smiling alittle as he felt the large egg's surface. He didn't feel anything, was this egg empty? But with it's size? No way. It must have been one who just didn't want to talk. He pulled his hand away from the Discreet egg and moved on. Seeing more Candidates arrived, he didn't want to crowd them so he wandered off to the farther side.

He found the next egg, it's beautiful colors were stunning and he noticed it wiggled sometimes, much like the purple one had. He pressed his hand against the Easily Agitated Egg. It didn't seem to respond to him at all and he sighed, moving off to another one.

He couldn't help but gravitate towards the Guardian Egg it was another brown one but slightly different and still beautiful as he laid his hands upon it, he felt something sifting through his mind. The dragon inside certainly seemed to be looking for something and he held on until he felt it finish, He wondered jsut who could be inside and with that he moved on to the next egg.

CandidateMaster Assistant Wykla
Following the candidates in, she paused to glance toward the brooding mother and her rider. She smiled when she saw the nod from Narisa and gave a respectful bow to the pair. In trying times like these a little bit of respect would go a long way. Wykla nibbled her lip as she thought of the Hatching to come. Would the candidates and soon be baby dragons have to wade through cold water to find Theirs? She hoped not.

Candidate Thrarothar
Reluctantly he left Vibrant egg though they’d been told not to linger. He watched as the gold shoved her head in to check a couple of her eggs. Pushy mothers. Wisely he waited until she was satisfied before proceeding to Glowing Egg. It was a tiny egg and at first he wasn’t all that interested, but went through the motion anyhow. Thrarothar pressed his hand to the shell and arched his brow. Why yes, his hands were clean. Maybe there was more here than met the eye. He gave it a second pat and told it to consider him good.

The motion of Antsy Egg drew him over, though he didn’t know why. Last time he touched an active egg it didn’t like him so much. Either it would like him or not. The young man touched the shell. He nodded to it. Oh yes a very good wiggle. He is sure it will hatch first. Thrarothar moved himself over to Kind and Keen. The greeting surprised him as he connected with the shell. This was a mite better than some of those others. Would any dragon work? No he really needed to show up M’rine. With a pat he moved on.

The feeling from Watchful Egg was a bit unnerving in a way. Thrarothar shifted his feet in the hot sands and glanced side to side. It might not have been such a good idea to touch this one. He moved along quickly to Temperate Egg. This one felt solid as a rock. Nothing could shake it. He lived for competition. It irked him that he’d lost once when it really matter. He really should move along now.

Last up was Obnoxious Egg and he felt the headache hit soon as he touched the shell. Ow! What’d it do that for? Oh it was only excited. Well tone it down a bit will it? That’s better. Thrarothar looked back over the small clutch then looked to the mother. What did she think of her eggs? The short youth turned to leave the Sands; in search of some willowbark.

Becka smiled slightly wistfully at Cai "Well i don't mind if i don't get a dragon but how could i not hope just a little, my Master has Berath" She sighed happily as she thought of the lovely chunky Green, unless she got her own Dragon, Berath was the best dragon on the whole of Pern.

She was slightly surprised at the invitation, she wasn't sure whether to accept or not but she knew Bereck would say she should make more friends, Becka hadn't really made any since the takeover at Malvren, she was almost afraid to after what happened to her best friend. "Alright, if Miath insists" she replied with a mental nod. She really should at least try ... well .. she had tried a couple of times with others but that hadn't really worked out, still she was glad she could avoid certain people..... for the moment.

Tacelon had worked as hard as anyone, preparing for the storm and cleaning up afterward. When the word was put out for all Candidates to gather for the Touching, he almost didn't bother. There was so much work to be done, and no dragon would be interested in him anyway, whether he touched the eggs or not. But he didn't want to annoy anyone by disobeying, so he went. On went the white robes and sandals (which were entirely impractical for walking through mud and wet sand,) and he headed to the Hatching Grounds.

The queen looked extremely annoyed at everyone, and Tacelon supposed he couldn't blame her. A storm like that was a terrible time to have eggs on the sands, and he hoped they stayed warm enough. The danger didn't seem to be over either, since the Hatching Ground was still left with a layer of water over everything but the highest sands, leaving the eggs clustered tight together. He wondered how feasible it would be to add a roof to the Hatching Grounds, to protect them from storms, thieves (if any more would dare and try for the eggs) and Thread. Though after a moment he decided it probably would not be possible any time soon, since pretty much all of the available time and resources had to be devoted to rebuilding the Weyr.

Tacelon listened carefully to the Assistant Candidatemaster to see if there were any different instructions from last time, but it seemed to boil down to "be extra polite." So he made sure to bow to the queen and her rider before sloshing though the water to the eggs.

He first made his way to the Rolly Polly Egg, an oddly round one. Not wanting to annoy the queen, he dusted of his hand on his robe before laying his palm against the egg. This one did not send a feeling jumping sharply out at him like some had done. This one seemed quieter, as if it was busy thinking, though it was hard to tell what about. He waited a moment to see if the egg would do anything more, but it seemed to be absorbed it it own thoughts. Whatever it was thinking about was probably more interesting than him anyway, so he withdrew his hand and moved on.

Tacelon headed for the closest egg, the Easily Agitated Egg. He thought he might have seen the boldly splotched egg rock a bit, but he wasn't sure. It certainly didn't move as he rested a hand on it. This egg also had no blatant reaction to him, and in fact hardly seemed to notice he was there. In fact, it seemed more intent on getting closer to its siblings than anything. Was he intimidating or something? (He doubted it.) Or was this just shy? Either way, it did not seem to want him around, so he left.

Next he went to the Territorial Egg, half expecting a quiet reaction like the last two. As soon as his hand touched the shell, the egg immediately proved him wrong with a sharp feeling that was like a shout for him to back off. He jumped and half-withdrew his hand by reflex, but stopped himself with the fingertips still touching. Should he leave? Had he done something wrong? He hadn't meant to upset the egg. And at that thought, he glanced at the queen to make sure she wasn't about to kick him out. But she seemed no more annoyed than usual, and the egg seemed to be calming down, so he gingerly flattened his palm on the shell again. The egg actually seemed to be becoming curious about him, so he waited and let it get a good look (er, sense?) at him. Nothing else seemed forthcoming though, so after a moment he backed off and went on his way.

Cai
(tagging Becka & Wen)

It would be amusing maybe, if both girls knew the other's thoughts and reasons behind their conversation. Both, feeling pressured by outside forces to forge a friendship with another. "Berath is a good dragon. Definitely." Cai agreed. " It's a different time though, from when Master Bereck Impressed. Now, if you Impress you're expected to fight Thread." Cai's mouth drew down into a line at the thought. She knew her unique options and didn't like either one. It was a weight that lay heavy on her shoulders. "Or breed." She added sourly. She felt Miath's concern in the back of her mind and took a breath, turning a semi-friendly look back on Becka. "Come on. Miath will be ecstatic." Cai rolled her eyes again and turned to climb up the Stands to where Miath sat positively beaming at the two girls.

Ooooh what a pretty little egg! I wonder what ours looked like? Cai's memory couldn't tell Miath what egg had been hers, at the time the young healer had stopped paying attention to the hatching. I wouldn't know what to pick~{/i] Miath drawled, leaning on Rynsemth. Is that a gold egg? She was slightly distracted by the approach of her rider.

Thankfully the climb wasn't terribly far and as they neared the dragons, beneath them Cai spotted the familiar blond head of Wen. She lifted a hand in a wave, unabashedly walking right up to him and his 'lady friend' as Miath had put it. "Should I be surprised to find you here?" She smirked at him, her hand automatically shifting from her greeting to stroke the red nose that appeared at her side. "I told you I wouldn't be long Miath." She chided.

"Becka, this is Wen, Miath, Rynsemth and..?" She gestured to each in turn as she said their names, making quick work of the introductions and hinting to Wen that his friend should be introduced as well with a raised eyebrow.

Rynsemth gave the egg a look of appraisal, reaching to touch Wen's memory and hummed as he failed to see Miath's egg. He looked over the eggs and finally decided on the largest. < The large one in the back. Do you think it would be a green or a brown?>

the black added to his rider, one eye watching the woman approach in amusement.

Wen twisted slightly and nodded, waving back at Cai. "I don't know why it would be surprising. Though I see you managed to bring Rynsemth inside instead of having him block the paths." He looked fondly towards his black and ignored the grumble in reply.

"Jemi, she's my sword sister and part of the guard from my home hold. She transferred over to keep me out of trouble." Wen shifted, easily escaping the playful swat and smiled slightly. "Becka." He nodded to her.

Jemi sighed as she failed to swat Wen and instead lightly tugged on his blond braid. "Not the only reason." She said and grinned brightly at the girls. "Well, this is odd. Never thought you would make friends with gals outside the guard." Anyone outside the guard really. Jemi looked at Cai, echoing the raised eyebrow for her to explain how such a thing had happened.

Naanash

Naanash moved on touching the Guardian egg briefly. The dark egg was heavy, serious and judging. He didn't feel rebuff but he didn't feel horribly welcomed either. Almost as if the little thing couldn't figure what to think of him. He moved on, touching Kind and Keen. The little dragon was polite, cheerful even in its greeting. He lingered, soaking in the cheerfulness that radiated out from the egg. Happy and intelligent? He felt the keen edge, the curiosity and the want of knowledge. He finished and reached out to touch the Temperate egg. The wave of calm and near absolute stillness was refreshing. Naanash felt himself relax,
