Amrita continued to run her fingers through his hair as he spun his tale for her. She was by far an expert on the subject, and she had a lot of similar problems of her own. For a moment her mind wandered to her own little letter, the one written to her by a distraught Igor...but she shook her head, and tried to focus on what Roch was telling her.
"I don't know, Roch. I...really don't know." She admitted, sliding her arms across his shoulders to lean against him in a hug. "Time, friends, a little vacation?" Not drinking was left unsaid.

"Time doesn't seem t'be workin, friends only work as long as they're actually there, an' a vacation..." He frowned, wrapping an arm around her waist without thinking. "Terra offered t'take me with her when she headed home--but she ain't ready t'go yet. Think she wants t'get to second year first."
He sighed, wishing he knew another way. "It... it's a lot like how my Ma left me, Amrita... am I cursed t'have females leave me? If it's like that, why the hell should I even try?" he asked her.

She allowed the touch, continuing to lean against him in hopes of being comforting. The news of his Mom was something of a shock to her; until that moment she hadn't realized how he'd never talked about his Mother, and part of her felt guilty for never asking.
"I'm sorry, Roch. I didn't know about you Mom. If it's any consolation...I'm not going anywhere." She assured him, leaning in to rest her head on his shoulder, though she didn't think it meant much. "Don't give up, I'm sure there's someone out there for you..."

"Why should there be?" Roch asked after a moment of thought. "All things considered... I know I'm a halfway lousy pal t'have, I wind up skippin' out more often than not, even you've complained about that one--an' the job I got lined up? Means I'll be skipping out more often than not even after I graduate. What kind of ghoul would want t'live a life where her boil is gone half the time?" he asked her.
He stared forward, a deep, unsettling realization kicking in. "I'm turnin' into my old man," he said quietly. "If I ain't careful I'll wind up with some brat bein' abandoned by his mother an' me workin' too much to give a jack. Maybe--maybe it was for the best that she left now."

"I only complain because you're missing so many classes, and that's not a good thing." Amrita interjected, trying to come to her own rescue and to reassure Roch that she didn't really mean it. "Look at how many times you've come to check on me! You're one of the few that try." The word was used on purpose, because most knew that sometimes, in some situations, there was just no cheering her up.
"You're not going to turn into your Dad." She insisted, giving his shoulders a squeeze. "Because you don't want to be, I think you can fight to not be...but as for the other thing..." Her voice shook as she trailed off, his words hitting home in a spot that was still quite gaping and sore. What ghoul would want to live a life where her boil was gone half the time, indeed.
"As long as you don't make her feel like a consolation prize, you'll be fine." Amrita said softly, almost sadly. "I like to think that most ghouls wouldn't mind the distance...so long as you don't put another ghoul - or boil - ahead of them."

"A job can be just as bad," he said softly. "Y'don't... y'can't compete with a job. Y'might be able t'compete with another ghoul or boil, since you're both made of FEAR, but--" He sighed, running a hand over his face.
"I spent most of my childhood tryin' t'compete with a job, Amrita. An' he didn't come back till I didn't need him no more," he said. "An' its worse now--cuz I LIKE my job. I love makin' things like the battle of the bands, or goin' t'new worlds, or even goin' t'the human world. Nah, I think its best t'give up on love for me." A little bittersweet smile played on his lips. "Stick with the pals that love me rather than find a love that leaves me sortta thing."

"I don't know about that, but I see your point...and I really do think that if you did meet a ghoul who didn't mind, and you did have a scareling, you'd make the time to be more attentive, to give your kid what you didn't have." She honestly believed this of him, and once upon a time she certainly had entertained the idea of scarelings of her own, even promising herself that she would treat her spawn better than her family treated her.
"Well...how about you just take the time to heal and get yourself back on your feet...but someday, if some ghoul gets your attention? Don't run from it, okay? Don't hold yourself back just 'cause you're scared of being your Dad. Your Dad's kind of a jerk, yanno that?" Amrita was trying to joke, having had her fair share of butting heads with both older Scythe men. Her hand slipped through his hair again, but this time she leaned over to press a little kiss against his temple, something others had done to her when she was upset.
"Promise me that?" That he wouldn't run or give up if it happened again, that if it progressed he wouldn't turn into his Dad, and, though this was left unsaid, that he'd be happy.

He turned, looking at her seriously. "Y'know, Amrita, you're an amazing ghoul," he told her. "A guy would be lucky t'get a ghoulfriend as understanding as you are." And since she'd kissed him first, he leaned down and kissed her cheek. "Hell, I'm lucky I got you as a friend," he said in a whisper, cuddling her closer.
A part of his mind was starting to nudge him--a hint of a warning bell that wasn't quite heard over the drama in the forefront of his mind. "But I doubt that promise will ever come up," he said with a yawn.

Once more, she felt a stab through her unbeating heart. Understanding? Not really. She had tried, really she did...but in the end, she was too selfish, wasn't she? The ghoul let out a disagreeing whine, but otherwise didn't comment on the whole being a ghoulfriend thing.
"I try to be a good friend." She settled with a small and almost nervous chuckle, leaning against him as he cuddled her. The contact was nice, and she didn't think a thing of it past that. "Promise me anyway." She demanded stubbornly, shifting against him so she could play with his hair while he drifted to sleep.

"Yeah... if I ever find a ghoul that catches my eye, I'll try again--and probably fail again," he said with a yawn. "Then you'll have t'make me promise again, an' it'll all start over again, an' honest t'Jack I'm not gonna look that hard an' save myself the time," he said, looking extremely sleepy.
His eyes kept closing--then opening--then closing again, much like a child fighting sleep. It wasn't bad, having someone there with him. Maybe if she stayed while he fell asleep he wouldn't have so many dreams.
Maybe.

Amrita swatted him lightly as his promise turned negative, but it was half hearted at best. He was hurting, this wasn't the time to be smacking sense in to him. "Well, if that happens, I'll be here to make you promise again, and again, and again." She assured him, though in reality she wasn't sure if that was something she could make good on. She would always try of course, but...who knew what happened in the future, especially to her.
The Patchwork stayed where she was for the rest of the night, only moving when he did.
The night was long, her mind trailing from one thing to the next, but she stayed quiet and patient, waiting for the morning to come and for Roch to wake up.

Morning came. And just because he'd gotten in the habit of actually going to class, Roch woke up about seven, a smile on his face as he looked at Amrita-- "Mornin' blue--"
Then he stopped, realizing what he'd almost said. "Er... what... uh... happened last night?" he asked her. "Did I make an a** of myself again?"

Blue? Ah, perhaps it was a nickname for Amphi, maybe? Either way Amrita knew better than to focus on that, and she let his slip slide easily enough.
"You drank yourself stupid, won that giant thing over there, bumped into everything in the dorm, fell down some stairs, told me some bad news, and then passed out." Amrita summarized for him, moving one of her arms from around his shoulders to count his transgressions on her fingers. "So, in short, just another day for you~" She was teasing now, trying to make light of the situation.
"But the next time I catch you drinking I'm going to stuff you in the other Bathroom." She threatened, sounding as pleasant as ever.

"With the horsemen?" Roch asked blankly. "Can they even all fit in there anymore?" Idiotic moment for a second, then--
"Holy Jack that sucker's MASSIVE!" he said as he saw the toy sitting in the corner. "I won that?" He got to his feet in a jump, heading over to it. "Awesome! Wait--I bet I had a plan for it, right? Probably--" he looked at the face. "Terra!" he said, since drunk Roch and sober Roch were pretty much on the same mental track.
"Wait--what bad news did I tell you?" he asked. He absently started searching his pockets, then headed for the half kitchen to dig out some cryenol.

"No, the Other Other Bathroom. The one that tries to eat you." Amrita clarified, rolling her eyes as he jumped to his feet and scrambled off like a little scareling. Feeling a little lazy, the patchwork remained on his bed, but she did shift and nuzzle into the pillows to at least pretend to be a little sleepy. "Yeah, you did, and---yep." He answered himself, which was a good thing since Amrita was distracted by hugging his pillows to pretend she was still asleep.
"You told me about Amphi...and I made you promise me that you'll take the time to heal, but if a ghoul comes along and you have feelings for her, you won't run like a little brat. Also if you have kids you're not going to be like your Dad." Playing catch-up with Roch was an old game, but one she played happily enough.
"And if you break your promise with me I'll...I'unno, do something."
