Perhaps that is an indication that when they say mathmatical or algebraic that they find the situation, or what have you, cool or inspiring and yet do not fully comprehend it.
However, seeing they use the words as we might use awesome, perhaps their inability to do math/algebra makes them see the like as being awe inspiring or magical. That would make sense seeing as magic has returned and is more prevalent than science/math, leading math/algerbra to be more awe inspiring and so they say mathmatical/algebraic.
