Chase was a wise man, and Ever just nodded at him for it -- no complaining, no trouble, no urging. He appreciated people who had the wits to steer clear. As he'd said more than once, it was an addiction, not simply a hobby.

He didn't speak, for a bit, just light his cigarette and drew smoke into his lungs, considering what to say and where to poke, what questions to ask. He was here, and he'd had some purpose in mind, but the prospect of a drink made it all melt away some.

"What do you do?" It was as good a question as any, and one anyone could answer.

Addictions were something the young man tried to steer clear of, unfortunately they always seemed to sneak up on him then left abruptly leaving him gasping as he tried to cope with withdrawals. Smoking, so far, had been the one thing he remained free of and he intended to keep it that way.

Work came up and he let out a sigh, he didn't care to talk about his job with others simply because it was something that reminded him of his father. He avoided the subject, but since he was asked he would answer. "I'm a marketing partner for...ah. An electronic and computer company. I'd really rather not state the name." He'd never liked naming the company he worked for, people always tried to get things from him when they knew. They had done the same when they'd known that his dad was in that position. "Took the job when my father passed, apparently he had been very specific in his desires to have me work for them. Dead man's last wish. How could I refuse?"

That got a slow blink out of Ever, a hint of a shudder; he blew smoke back over his shoulder, away from Chase instead of toward him, as he considered his answer.

"God help me, I could refuse." It came out earnest, amused, teasing all at once. Ever shook his head and tapped off ash as he thought about his limited interactions with even the behemoth machines at the public library. Like stepping into a foreign country. "Of course, that's in part because I don't know what it means to be a marketing partner at a...at an electronic company. You sell computers?"

Here was one person who would definitely not ask him for shiny tech, at least.

Chase remained quiet with only the smallest hint of a sad smile on his lips. "It's a guilt thing," he admitted. He considered telling Ever that his father's death was his fault but decided against it. Too personal for now. "And work keeps me busy, both jobs," he stated, shrugging. It was what he did when he didn't want to deal with things, he buried himself in work.

He had done it shortly after graduation and did it now after the funeral. It was easier because he didn't have time to over think things. He didn't mention the toll it took on him, the resurface of his insomnia and the late nights working out. Sleep meant dreams and he wasn't ready for dreaming.

"Sorta," he laughed because Ever not knowing was oddly reassuring. "Basically means I figure out how people think and use it to sell them stuff. Like advertising but more specific."

"Oh, I used to do something kind of like that." Except the product in question had been himself, and it had been more toward 'free' than 'for sale'; there was a glint in Ever's eyes that was amused, and mocking, and made it clear he wasn't telling the whole story there. He tapped off his cigarette in an absent way, watching the ash fall as he walked.

"Never had much of a real job, though, so it's hard for me to wrap my mind around. I guess I should get one, now. Being in the...the section I am, it's useful to have a place in society, instead of just drifting around." But he shrugged. He didn't want to think about it, not really.

Up ahead, there was a bar; the place Chase had intended or not, at least they could get drinks there.

"Hard to imagine you in that line of work," Chase replied carefully. He hadn't missed the glint in the man's eye and he recognized it, if only because he used to carry the same glint in his own eyes frequently. "Of course, if it wasn't really work and more for...entertainment than maybe." He remembered the days when he did mischievous things simply because they amused him, now he hardly had time for them.

War often brought the loss of youth.

"I could probably help with that," he shrugged, "If you wanted. Worked a few different jobs before this one." He missed the coffee shop and, to a degree, the golf club. "And I know some people," he offered. Connections left over from his father. Surely they'd do him a favor.

"But drifting is good too," he stated, albeit awkwardly. Interaction wasn't so easy to him any longer. "Not being tied down has perks." Serious perks.

They reached the bar and he yanked the door open for them, motioning for Ever to enter first. It was habit, respectful habit.

"I put my hat in the company pool, so we'll see what comes of that first." He raised his eyebrows as he slid past Chase, taking the place in from the doorway before beelining it to an open table. The site was a rarity to Ever, who tended toward the kind of crowded place where people stood or sat with their elbows bumping. Maybe Chase would find it more commonplace, and the speed with which he nabbed it surprising.

He'd have to catch up. By the time he did, Ever was sitting with his legs sprawled out, looking the place over for real. "...fortunately, I have the company to lean on. And Zed, I guess."

Chase was surprised at how quickly Ever moved when he spotted an open table, as a man who hadn't frequented any bars lately it was unfamiliar to him. He felt out of place immediately and quickly followed Ever. He settled in beside him, arms folding over the table neatly. He looked around them before settling his gaze on his white haired companion.

"The company is good at taking care of their...employees," he agreed. "Who's Zed, if you don't mind me asking." It wasn't a name he knew.

"The General-King." It was easy enough, amused by the secrecy and the concern. He, at least, wasn't worried about being overheard -- not with things as loud in here as they were. Ever raised a hand, absently, in search of someone to come take drink orders. He wanted alcohol, and quick.

"And don't tell me there's more than one, I know, I know, but he's mine, so." His eyes flicked back to Chase and he shrugged. "I don't need that line again."

"I don't think I'm well acquainted with him," Chase admitted. He knew of General-King Zinkenite but hadn't personally interacted with him. "Considering the other General-King is head of my division I'm pretty sure I know who you mean." He shrugged, gaze sweeping across the bar and spotting a server heading towards them.

"How do you know Dustin?"

"Zed recruited him." How else? How had Ever known anyone until recent changes? He made a little sound, thinking about that. Making the effort now was, at least, some progress. It made him feel useful again. In a way.

Fingertips strummed against the table as the server approached, and Ever drew her in. He wanted vodka, and a lot of it, but that didn't mean much. He pretty much always wanted vodka and a lot of it. He ordered with a flash of a grin up at her, just a bit flirty.

"An interesting choice," he remarked, "a bit of a wild card that one." He still hadn't gotten used to Dustin's antics, he doubted he ever would. He ordered a gin and tonic when the waitress came by, but unlike Ever he did no flirty action. It felt like those days were long past.

It was really just that he was still a bit out of touch when it came to being social.

"Did you really only show up at my house to discuss Dustin?"

"Yep." Except, the second it was out, Ever paused -- blinking at Chase and coming more into focus. It was an odd question, and one that made him think, head tipped to the side. Think. Smile, raise both eyebrows.

"Why? Were you expecting something else?" It was easily dry and joking, goading, but beneath...well. It was kind of the question of someone hiding something.

"I never know what to expect anymore," Chase answered after a beat. Things had been shifting, changing and the young man no longer knew what the expectations were. "I've been," he paused, hesitating. The waitress returned with their drinks and he swirled the accompanying straw around absentmindedly. He cleared his throat, trying again. "I've been fairly absent lately. Avoiding the job as it were," he admitted.

"Ah, well. That's kind of against the rules." His mouth quirked as he said it, though, less upset and more amused -- technically enforcing the rules, but in an easy going sort of way. It was different from most Generals, probably. He didn't think it was a bad thing, though: more flies with honey, and all that.

"Get your quota up, though, and no one will come to kick your a**." He drank -- and drank quickly, perhaps surprising, not relishing the drink, just trying to get the alcohol into his system.
