There was one bite of her pasta left: Rosalie slowly stuck her fork into it and twisted up what was left, nodding at Nicole as she watched it coil up. She didn't eat it, not just yet. Instead she pushed it around the plate, thinking, quiet and distracted, hair tumbling forward into her eyes.
"Sooner would be better." She sounded reluctant to say it, but she did anyway, eyes flicking up onto Nicole, and at long last she brought the bite up to her mouth, devouring it and dropping her fork down into the plate with a clatter. Her stomach was tight, now, and it took some effort to chew and swallow.
She washed it down with a long gulp of water. "It's causing me...it's...I'm finding it stressful."

Nicole's food didn't linger on her plate very long, and it may have appeared to the untrained eye that she couldn't have had time to enjoy it but a smile was spread across her face quite blissfully. Simply, with three older brothers, Nicole grew up in a race to the finish. If she wanted to eat, she had to do so before one of her brothers got to it first. She didn't eat quite so much like a pig anymore but there was still a sense of urgency lingering.
"Is that so?" She pondered more than she asked, watching as Rosalie played with her food. She couldn't help but wonder if her colleague was going to finish it or not, her brow scrunching up a bit as she watched. It wasn't until finally Rosalie put the pasta into her mouth and ate it that it seemed to lower back to an acceptable position on her face.
"I will keep that in mind then," she said, glancing to her watch before waving the waiter over. She would do whatever she could to relieve the stress Rosalie was feeling, adding it onto her ridiculous self-proclaimed deadlines of work she relieved from other people. Rosalie's problem would be easy enough to solve but she didn't want to go in unprepared. This was her neck on the line here if something went down badly.
"We're done here," she said with certainty to the waiter who scooped up both of the plates. "One bill when you've got a moment."
With a nod, he left, leaving Nicole to look back to Rosalie.
"How was the pasta?" She pondered, drumming her fingers against the table. "And don't worry, I'll straighten things out as quick as I can."

A nod -- understanding, accepting, and believing. Nicole said she'd take care of it, and so she -- presumably, would.
"They're good here." She fished out her wallet, battered leather, from her back pocket and folded it open to flip through the handful of bills inside. In all honesty, Rosalie was a bit low on cash; she didn't let it show. Instead she rooted out a twenty and a handful of ones and tapped them against the table to wait for the waiter to come back with the check. Her eyes still distracted, thinking about something else.
"If you need a favor in return, let me know." She shrugged as the waiter set their check down on the table, her eyes flashing up onto him and then back to Nicole. "You know what I'm good for."

"I might have to try it next time then," she said, nodding her head in regard to Rosalie's offer about returning the favour.
"Look, don't worry about it. I've got this, it's my treat," she said quite firmly, hoping Rosalie would simply accept it and put her money away, as she picked up the check from the table. Anyone who knew Nicole Walter knew that she was the type of person who always picked up tabs and offered to pay bills even when no one expected her to. It was her nature, and just as she wanted to pay for this lunch she also had a couple small bills in her pocket waiting for the musician on the park corner down the street.

"Bullshit." Anyone who knew Rosalie knew she never took a handout -- never -- which meant this probably wasn't the first time they'd had issues. Her eyebrows slid down, knotting in the front of her forehead, and quite pointedly she put a crisp twenty dollar bill on the table. It would more than cover her half, but not much more than that, which was exactly how she liked it. And before Nicole could complain more, she stood, tipping her head to the side and shaking herself out.
"I'm going to run. If you don't mind. You know how to reach me, and I should be -- well. We can talk on the phone, decide when and where, if you can find someone willing." She didn't wait for confirmation on the minding bit of things. Instead she shrugged and retreated, with a flash of a wave, pausing only to take a mint from the bowl by the door.
