Jake only sighed loudly and dragged a hand down his face.
"What do you WANT to do?"

She had not been expecting that question. She had no good answer for it. None. "I...uh...well," she looked him square in the face, falling back on honesty for lack of a better answer, "mostly just want to hang out with you."

...Typical.

Not when it's this late. Seriously. She needs to find some new hobbies.

Planting his hands firmly on the chair, he stared at her.
"Look. It's almost night now, and I still have my mission reports to finish up. If you're so insistent on... doing whatever the hell is is you want to do, then fine. Just tell me where to meet you tomorrow."

With that, he pushed himself up, putting his weight on the back of the chair, and...

SNAP

The faulty leg gave way as the tape unraveled from the pressure, sending Jake tumbling forward.
In an effort to catch himself, his hands shot out to steady himself, but unfortunately, he was facing Sherry, and...

As the chair toppled to the floor, Sherry would find herself with her back pressed against the bed, Jake's face mere inches from hers as he ended up... pushing Sherry over.

Well.
This wasn't awkward at all.

Sherry blinked. Right, mission reports. Those always needed- Oh. Did he just agree to hang out? Well, that was easier than she'd thought it would be. (Or was it?) "Well," but she didn't have anything to do. Maybe she could find something. "O--ah--umph!"

She'd heard the chair give way, but what followed happened before it all really registered. By the time Sherry found herself very much pinned to the bed, some part of her mind worked it out. The chair had broke, Jake had fallen, and now...

Sherry was indeed flat on her back, her hands it seemed had moved on their own to either protect her or catch him and were now firmly against someone's torso. The trainee was suddenly reminded of a book she'd once read--No! This was not- It was an accident and, and...Sherry was suddenly very aware of Jake. He was there and he was warm and his eyes were the deepest purple and he smelled like.... Her face grew hot and her heart, which had kicked it up a bit with the shock of someone falling on her, was not exactly slowing down. "Oh, um..."

She wanted to run from embarrassment, laugh in friendship, or embrace Jake in some feeling she wasn't quite ready to inform him of. So she did the next best thing. Sherry froze like a scared rabbit. "Um..." She couldn't even tear her eyes away from his face.

Armagnac was oozing so much disgust she could have rolled in it. She was also muttering something about reaction times.

Not. A. WORD.

This was... mortifying. He should never allow her into his room ever again. Then this would have never happened.
Chester made a sort of noise in his head, which Jake deliberately ignored, knowing the nergal was only expressing his disapproval at such an idea.

He then realized that... Sherry's hands were on his chest, and stared at her, his own hands planted on either side of her.
His elbows bent as he lowered himself down, their noses almost touching, and...

...pushed himself up using the momentum, staggering backwards, but managed not to fall over.
He gave the chair a firm kick, sending it to the wall, and cleared his throat.

"Well, uh, you can go now."

Mortifying? Sherry would have agreed with that if she could read minds. Mortifying and...

She would later recall (and yes, she would replay the scene often in her mind) that her arms offered absolutely no resistance as Jake leaned forward the slightest bit. Her hands could feel his muscles tense; her eyes stayed locked on his. He was so close. So warm and...

Sherry rocked with bed the slightest bit as Jake pushed himself away. She sucked in a breath (how long had she been holding that?) of surprise and relief before she forced herself to sit up. She was just in time to see the chair make friends with the wall.

"I, uh, yeah," she stammered in response to Jake's words, her face completely red. She really should leave, she... Sherry stood up, self-consciously straightening her jacket before looking at Jake. Maybe she should just...

"You know, I-I really, I--" she faltered and stopped herself. Now was not the time to go blabbering on about liking him, not when her blood was running so hot and his obviously wasn't. He had just said she could leave, after all.

She made for the door. "I, um, I'll message you tomorrow." With the slightest bit of a nod, she let herself out of his room.

The moment she left, he quickly shut the door, locked it, checked to make sure he locked it, and then sank to the ground, burying his face in his hands as he rested his back against the door.

Several minutes passed in silence, and then he finally let out a shaky breath, and sighed.

Y-yeah, I just...

Why was he trembling? Sherry had every right to be terrified, but... just...
He was eternally grateful he had taken a shower prior to her visiting, so at least her horrified look wouldn't be due to him... smelling... but, just...
The look of terror in her face brought back memories. Painful ones. He clutched his chest as it began pounding, beads of sweat rolling down his face.

She reminded him... so much... of her...
Her hands were so warm, and... he knew when he started leaning down, it could have been taken the wrong way, yet she didn't protest and...

His face flushed, and he buried his face in his hands again, muttering something unintelligible.
Meanwhile, Chester remained quiet, listening to the thoughts running through his head. It seemed the trainee still didn't notice, but maybe, this was the start of something-

"...Maybe shopping won't be so bad. I need a new chair.
... A titanium one."

...No, he still had a long way to go.
