Avery made a resolution not to look at Liberty's stupid, cute, freckled face, and instead leveled her stare at the textbook. "What?" Just studying? On her birthday? Was Kess going to stand for that? Was Avery going to stand for that?
"Let me take you to dinner." A pause before she rushed out the last part of the sentence. "For your birthday." Who didn't get a birthday dinner? That was ridiculous. Libby didn't eat well enough, anyway, judging from the contents of her kitchen any time Avery was around to glance through it.
"It'll be fun," Just a quick meal. "I promise to have you home by curfew." So that Libby could study and be super responsible and boring.

Liberty's head jerked up from the book. Avery wasn't looking at her. Thankfully, she wasn't touching Liberty, either, or she might have felt how quickly the redhead's heart was beating.
Oh. Right. Birthday.
Swallowing, she shifted away the discomforting pressure that had begun in her chest. Avery continued to speak, and Liberty copied the information she needed from problem five onto her sheet. Was that a three or an eight?
"Alright," she decided, unsure of whether to be terribly excited or slightly disappointed that it was only a birthday dinner. When Avery eventually left, Liberty would decide it was the definitely the first. "That sounds like a lot of fun." Then, unable to contain that pleased up-welling in her throat, she added cheekily, "So, you'll pick me up?"

"Yes, I'll pick you up," Avery answered immediately, as if indignant that Liberty would have to ask. Glancing up, she caught the redhead's playful expression, her own mouth curving slightly as she shot Libby a dark look. "Jerk."
That decided, her good hand tapped the book. "But only if we get through the rest of this worksheet, today." Maybe the could get enough done that Liberty wouldn't be so determined to spend the next evening studying...

Liberty's smile only broadened more.
"Deal."
Settling comfortably into the couch, she pulled the book closer to her lap, and began the next problem. Within a few minutes, Liberty was immersed, and the majority of the evening was thereafter restricted to light conversation and making Liberty feel prepared for the upcoming test.
