He removed and raised a hand, pressing his forehead into the palm. He could feel the panic gradually getting the better of him, and he swallowed dryly, drawing a long breath and forcing his eyes to focus. "Nothing happened," he said at length. "I just want someone else to say it."

"To say what?" she asked, watching him carefully.

Green eyes closing, he moved the hand still in his lap to grasp Dove's, drawing as much will as he could from the lifeline.
"Yuri…"
Yuri wasn't a bad person. He couldn't understand why the swordsman had said such a thing. He couldn't imagine any excuse for it.
"…said that Asch…"
He just said it. It didn't make it true. Anyone could say anything. There was a Dragonite in the room. See? No Dragonite. Saying it didn't make it real.
"…that Asch…"
So why couldn't he say it?!

She held his hand tightly, realizing exactly what he was trying to say the moment he began to try.
Her face fell blank as she fought the immediate rush of emotion, her face paling. He couldn't have... surely not. Her chest hurt, her throat tightening.
"L-Luke..."

He might as well have been only mouthing the words as one long, inaudible string of syllables when they finally reaching him, eyes still shut painfully, "Yuri said that Asch killed himself so I wouldn't die." An inhale, an exhale. Having passed the greatest challenge of the explanation with an arguably degree of success, his features relaxed. "I don't know if you know Asch, but that's not something he would do. I'm only worried because I haven't seen him, and they won't give me my 'dex so I can't send a message."

Dove stayed quiet, completely unsure how to handle the entire situation as it was. She quickly fought the tears in her eyes so the boy wouldn't see, speaking only when she was sure her emotions were under control.
"Did he say anything else...?" she asked quietly, knowing deep in her mind that there had to be more.
Asch wasn't coming back.
This wasn't going to be as easy as they thought.

With great hesitation, he shook his head negatively - though really he just couldn't remember if there was anything else. Oh, but there was something else.
"Told to give me something," he recounted disjointedly. Something paper. He recalled rejecting it.

She nodded, then looked around the room, eyes falling to the paper on the table next to the bed. Leaving one hand in his, she reached for and picked up the envelope, looking at it a long moment, before offering it to him.
"Luke, I think you should read this."

"Luke..."
She closed her eyes a long moment, then opened them after thoughtful consideration. "... I could read it to you... You don't have to be alone..."

"I don't care," he said, turning his head from her. Realistically, he didn't know why he was so adverse to looking at that letter. How could it possibly harm him, given that there was absolutely nothing wrong. The very thought of the letter was inexplicably terrifying.

Her brow furrowed, she paused, then opened the envelope with one shaking hand, dreading its contents. Taking a moment to read the first few lines in silence, she closed her eyes, her grip on the boy's hand tightening again, tears welling and escaping under her lashes.
"Luke, you need to read this."

"I'm not going to read it," he said, still firmly turned from Dove and everything to do with the letter in her hand. "Because," because why? how was he justifying himself? "Asch always just insults me for no reason. I don't need to read something like that."

She looked him over a moment, the tears still falling, took a deep breath, then turned back to the letter, this time, reading it aloud.
"If...If you're reading this..Dreck, then that means..."
Slowly, she fought through the letter, her hold on his hand unshaken, though the rest of her body trembled with each line she spoke.
"My... My name and my heart are now yours, and you had better use them well! Your Brother, Luke fon Fabre
... Falling silent, she folded the letter again, tucked it into the envelope, and sat it aside before turning back to Luke.

He made absolutely no indication of having heard a single word other than a light shuddering of his shoulders and hands. Eventually, at great length, he drew up his knees and leaned into them, wearing a grimace he thought to be a smile. "Hah!" he choked forcibly. "He-- has a terrible sense of humor." A sharp breath, the words to follow coming with effort, "I'd say he's always been like that but I hardly… hardly know him…"
No, please.
