"Could be," he said. In truth, the soldier in Jack was inclined to agree with Desmond. There was a great deal of potential for trouble at an event such as this. That same part of him would be keeping an eye out for any signs of such trouble. Though there were many men on duty, there could never be enough eyes at an event such as this. There was too much hidden beneath masks and elaborate costume. It was inevitable that the men would miss something.

The rest of him, however, was simply a nobleman and a lover of life. That part of him was looking forward to the festivities. Indeed, that part of him was liable to cause some of he mischief that Desmond seemed so concerned about. "But there's no saying that you cannot take advantage of the situation, as well. Talk to people. Flirt with some ladies. Enjoy yourself."

This time, he managed to keep his face impassive. Flirt with ladies? Even before his eye had been turned into a scarred over ruin, he'd never been able to talk to a woman, let alone flirt with them. Even dainty flowers gave him a wide berth, as if they couldn't bare to stand his awkwardness even through an upbringing that taught them to show kindness to all.

"I...I think not. The ladies here all seem taken, either way." Hastily, he diverted from the subject. "I do believe I'm going to excuse myself and do a little exploring. If we don't meet again before the night is over, would you care to join me in a beer sometime in the future?"

Liadain, he could tell, was starting to tire, though her persistence seemed next to none. The stubborn little goat of a deer had started to hide more, rather then run, but it wouldn't be long before Astrophel caught her. Desmond would have to feed her soon, he suspected.

Desmond's efforts to avoid the subject would have been obvious to a blind man, and Jack was certainly not dense. So, he was shy around the ladies, was he. Interesting. Perhaps they could do something about that. It was only right to help a brother in arms, right? The Captain filed the information away for later.

With a charmingly innocuous grin that someone like Jordun (or really, any of the men serving with or under Jack) could have warned Desmond meant a great deal of trouble and possibly embarrassment, Jack informed him that, "I would love to join you for a drink. Next chance we get."

No outward signal was given, but Astrophel appeared by his Chosen's side as though summoned by magic. Jack raised his glass in a casual salute. "Enjoy the party," he said, then turned and strode confidently into the crowd, Aster following like a frisky, but well-trained hound.

Desmond nodded his head as the other man walked away with his Guardian. As if on cue, Liadain appeared beside him, as tired looking as he'd assumed she would be, though she held her head high as though her pride alone could keep the weariness from her small frame. He knelt down beside her, taking her head between his hands and scratching her jawline on either side. It was an odd place for scratches, but she loved it and soon her eyes fluttered and she leaned into him. He could feel her hunger, and smiled.

"Come on, little lady. Let's get something in your belly."
