Last gives Oberon a dark look, but when they are treading so carefully around Rajani he does not dare say anything, not even in fun. It simply isn't worth risking her temper, although odds are good that Last will remember this moment for a time when he is not already treading on thin ice.

It's First that will answer Rajani, without removing his hand from his face; he doesn't dare look at Unwelcome. He already knows that the rook is radiating smug satisfaction, standing up straight and smoothing her feathers down with a pleased little chirrup from deep in the back of her throat.

"One've our brothers. He don't take well to being put off." From the redness on his face between his fingers, she can probably guess how the Freds ended up answering to their sibling -- then again, that may be a given. Unwelcome wouldn't have tried this little trick if she hadn't known that it would work.

Last snorts, wearing a touch of a blush himself but ready to be more irritated at their missing sibling than he is mortified by the experience of being scolded by a bird. "On a roll, we are," Last says wryly. "Next thing you know, the queen herself's going to come off her throne just for the pleasure of tellin' us what's what." First the guardsman .. then Rajani .. then this sibling of theirs. The Freds have not had an easy time of it lately.

In return, Oberon gives Last a smug, and decidedly taunting look of his own, though how a deer of any kind is capable of managing such expressions remains a mystery. Must be something in his too-intelligent eyes.

Oblivious to their antics - or more likely, simply ignoring them - Rajani instead allowed herself to be perversely amused at the Freds' expense. Even their big brother has been bossing them around. Of course, knowing them, they probably deserved it. They deserve most lectures or shouts that go their way. Probably more, but surely they've managed at least some stealth in their time.

"Perhaps for impersonating a guard," she conjectured. "I'm sure there's some sort of law against that." Never mind that no one in their right mind would be fooled into believing that the pair of them were guards. Of course, the queen was not liable to waste her time with them, anyway; but that was not the point either. It was still an amusing thought.

"Don't even jest on that!" First actually looks worried for the barest second -- perhaps because their luck has been so incredibly poor lately, things that would ordinarily be unimaginable seem almost possible now.

Last actually leans over to one of the rickety little structures set up specifically to serve the guest, rapping sharply on it to call to the spirits that once inhabited the wood. "We'd just as soon keep off've that side of the place," the other twin agrees, with a slight shudder. "Ain't got no interest seeing the Queen, leastways."

"Be just our luck," First mutters, running a hand through his already rumpled hair. "Little gods own hells," he continues. "I've been half a mind to start leaving out saucers of milk, at home, or step up to the wood." From the sound of things, he's mostly joking. Mostly. He's young enough, and unsettled enough by recent events, to wonder if all their bad luck might just be because there's a god somewhere that they have somehow offended.

Their evident distress elicited an amused smirk from the gypsy. Good to know that she was not the only one whose life had been turned upside down by recent events. It helped soften her temper toward them just a bit more.

"I think the only thing you'd entice is a few stray grimalkin," she said. Somehow, she could not picture the arrogant, quiet creature known as Llyr lapping up milk left on a doorstep. Something told her that his kin were not any more likely to desire such offerings.

She waved a dismissive hand. "Unless you've anything more to add, I've a party to attend." Doubtless, there were other people she ought to be talking to now that her business with the Freds was settled.

The pair of them shudder visibly at the word 'grimalkin,' for they've had poor luck with those creatures, and they'd have a word or two to say about the wretched beasts if they weren't afeared it'd set Rajani off again. Last even rubs at his chest, like he's remembering something.

"Pox on that," is all he mutters, a bit darkly. "Druther not."

"Aye, aye, captain," is First's response, now allowing himself to be a touch amused by the thought of Rajani scouring the grand gala for information. "We'll report tomorrow, then?" This isn't exactly how he'd hoped their reunion would go -- her full of orders and quick to dismiss the pair of them -- but hat the same time it's better than it could have been. She could've told 'em off, had Obbie run 'em off, she could've said she never wanted to see them again ..

It was true that she was eager to be rid of them, fairly or not. If she were to be honest with herself, there was a mixed bag of reasons. In part, it was a matter of principle. They had vexed her well last they met, and though it had been nearly half a season since then, they still had to face the consequences. Couldn't let them get away with being complete idiots. Besides, she was still mildly annoyed with the pair of them. As for the rest, well...it was a bit much to get into and she really did have other things to do.

With a vague wave, Rajani slipped off into the crowd, Oberon following close behind.
