Grace very nearly flipped J'car the bird, but managed to hold back some sass and merely glared. She also looked over her shoulder at Ai, and merely rolled her eyes. She didn't have much to snap back at them with, but that was where Kr'stof came in, and as always did so with much... gusto.

"Wound? Next time I'll aim for a fatality. In the mean time, here's a magic trick, Smartass." A quick hand grabbed the green rider's bubblypie while he was preoccupied with the older meatroll. "Taa daa," she sarcastically spat, and then went and found a seat. It sounded like everyone was finally somewhat getting down to business, so perhaps a snack would be helpful in some way. Grace did like bubblypies.

She did not however like stupid remarks.

Bubblypie halfway to her mouth, Grace's hand stopped and the rider looked around for the culprit of such... stupidity (though maybe ignorance.... or naivety would be better words). "Yes, being locked up in sensory deprivation does absolute wonders for the already insane and psychotic. Or maybe you want to test it out yourself? --"

"Sorry I'm late, but I brought bubblypies! -- Awww, s**t, you guys already have them..." came the now depressed tones of Ferris as the usually brassy green rider pushed herself into the 'gathering.' Honestly, the Wing's meetings weren't really..meetings. Or at least never truly felt like them. If Ferris even knew how a meeting was supposed to feel.

"Oh, not you!" Moaned Grace, turning in her chair, bubblypie still held above her lap. She knew Ferris was a part of the Wing, but sweet Faranth, she couldn't stand the girl. It was like having two Cassith's in the room, except one wasn't as vain.

I heard that.

Good, now I won't have to repeat it.

"Yes 'ME.' Cool the dust filters, lacey Gracey. You're getting clogged." Despite there being an abundance of food, Ferris set her basket down with the rest and sat down in the nearest seat. Grace just continued to glare incredulously, and then puff at her cigarette like a chimney.

"Are we sharing things? My sister said there was almost a coup against the Warden and the wher handlers, that day when the Queen died. Don't know anything about the white rooms though."

"....Maybe you should," muttered Grace, though Ferris failed to hear.

Sparkles? Sparkles Junior?

Ah, and so it began.
Zamanateth crooned out what, for her, was a giggle. to everybody else it was one of those sounds that makes your guts go cold.
Ai couldn't help but smile, though she had always thought that pink made an excellent color for young boys. It could be manly.
Really it could be.
Really.

Ai managed to keep a fairly straight face.

It was a wonder those eggs had hatched. With Whers and greens guarding them... well, not so much that, but the sheer atmosphere here.

"Unfortunately for the little.. opal..." Ahh, opals were so pretty, though Ai preferred green stones when she wore jewelery. She wasnt wearing stones, but she did have her green shawl on, all the same. "... was 'interviewed' by Mine, who" no surprise "Upset her"

"... yet I hear that she came from what would have been a Queen Egg. That she is not a Queen worries me."
Zam gave a chortle. Look, she was clever. Candy a**, to refer to a many colored dragon.
Oh shut up. She was clever!

"...Which makes one wonder just what capabilities she will grow into"

Her expression darkened.
"Ah. The infamous white rooms..." She took a "I have not gone to see them yet, though I shall."

She managed to suppress a chuckle

She returned to the conversation at hand.

"Thats quite Allright." she said to Ferris, "There can always be more bubbly pies" she took one herself, but held it as the mirth of her discussion with Zamanateth died away to make way for the grim facts of her predecessor.

"As for the display... I've only heard rumors and side mentions." her face grew stern "Of course they wouldn't want to mention it to her successor, but the hushed tones and bitten back references are enough to tell me it was... tasteless." She made a mild face of disgust, "And likely cruel." Nobody should have to experience a 'showing' like that. She had heard enough to piece together a vague and probably inaccurately basic picture. Candidates. A broken Weyrwoman. A Display.
"With CHILDREN no less." she packed down the fury that rose like Bile in response. She had to be mild mannered. She had to be professional.
Zamanateth shifted curiously at Ai's anger.

This was a work meeting, and not the time to discuss child raising with a crazy murderous dragon.
Speaking of.

"And as for the events at the hatching... Shot? with a crossbow bolt? What did the Grey do?" Indeed. What had the little grey done? She couldn't imagine a dragon doing something that would warrant them being shot. Zamanateth herself had been a whirling dervish of a murder storm, and here she was, an older queen and very much alive.
There had better be a good answer for that.
"Also, as a side note, Mine noticed that there was a pile of discarded meat on the sands. Whatever was that about..."

And as for the whereabouts of the weyrleader... Since nobody would speak to her, she assumed that he was probably beyond between. May he find peace.

Alia shrugged. "Mauled some candidates, wreaked some havoc, nothing new." she said to Ai, putting her head in her hand. "Although I did hear it was.. vicious. One boy was nearly dead, from the sound of it. Still Impressed though, I heard."

Alia was more interested to hear about the opal, that was one she didn't know as much on. To be honest, she rather hoped that it did have the ability to command. That would mean a chromatic (opals counted as chromatics, right? They were certainly colourful enough) would have a power that thus far was held only by the metallic colours. And although she knew it would probably kick up even more of a fuss than it did already, she hoped too, because it might provide some amount of protection to some of her stranger siblings. If opals could command.. If dragons would listen to them..

Once provoked, her mind went wild with possibilities. "That would be something, wouldn't it?" she mused aloud. "I wonder how that would work. Irregulars commanding other irregulars? Just chromatics? Or all of them?" She wouldn't say, 'Or maybe even golds!'

But what she really wanted to know is; was this an isolated incident? Or was there a whole spectrum of colours hiding behind every blue that had never flown a gold?
<Think you could catch Zamanateth?> she asked Melangth, jokingly. After all, it was for science.
<I think you're talking nonsense again.> Was all Melangth had to say on it.

While she enjoyed talking about the new colours, there was very little else here that she didn't dread bringing up. Take your pick; missing riders, dead dragons, ex-riders being used as displays of power.. All of which she very much did not want to think about, but it was why they were here, after all..

A'vin was the first to bring up the Warden. Harsh didn't even begin to describe Alia's feelings towards him. Alia looked around, wondering whether she should speak. She was glad to have J'car as her wingleader, and not just because he sometimes brought them sweetbuns. She felt like he was a lot less uptight than some people and valued honesty, a quality she was about to put to the test. Finally, she sighed.

"Alright, I'm just going to ask this and hope I'm not the only one thinking it, maybe I am; why aren't we questioning him right now?" Even if his treatment of the gold was excusable, even if the death of the grey hatchling could be justified, even if he didn't have anything to do with the Weyrleader's disappearance, all of this still happened on his watch. Maybe she was just young, too young to remember M'onk from the Watch or have any loyalty to him because of it, but it seemed to her that if it was any other case, or any other rider, they'd have enough to warrant talking to him at least.

"Grace!" Kr'stof sounded horrified for approximately two seconds, clutching what was left of his meatroll to his chest. A'vin greeted him somewhere, barely registering due o the fact that someone just viciously stole his sweetroll, but he made a mental note in the back of his head to properly greet sparkles junior at a later date. But A'stor walked in. A'stor walked in and ignored him, sat at the other side of the room.

The greenrider blinked and frowned minutely, staring hard at the rumbly bronzerider in disapproval. "There's nothing wrong with men in pink. At least he's healthy and -- Well, who did you expect to watch the eggs, Alia? Brooding mother died, Dragonless queenrider likely swallowed a mercy draft, not that I blame her. Leave the eggs to the mercy of humans and dragons unable to protect them from humans? I don't think so. Bring on the whers, I say."

"And on that note, none of you witnessed a mauling when you Stood? Honestly? Isn't that a part of why we wear white robes and why Weyrling masters are like 'don't be a moron, babies tend to try and eat faces?" Kr'stof huffed, sinking back into his seat in a sulk. "It's nothing to be murdered over. And for good grief, listen to me. She sparkles. She has a sheen. Maybe we don't call her a color of a metal but the opal is certainly a metallic, maybe even a Queen. And, just..." He huffed again, head flopping back pathetically, one arm over his face, voice muffled. "One does not simply interrogate the former leader of the Watch. Do you know how many fits T'aku would have? I can count the ways. None of them would be fun."

J’car listed attentively, sipping at his klah or taking a bite of bubbly pie occasionally as the other riders spoke. They’d all gathered quite a bit of information in a short time, and all seemed to have more or less arrived at a similar consensus. He was about to chime in with his own findings when Alia spoke up and asked the question that was on everyone’s minds.

“That’s the thousand mark question, isn’t it?” he asked to no one in particular. Brow furrowed in thought, he ran a hand along the buzzed-short stubble on his scalp that passed for hair, then let both hands drop back into his lap. “Why we’re not questioning M’onk.”

His gaze traveled around the room, looking at each rider in turn. He would speak frankly; he trusted them all enough to assume it wouldn’t come back to bite him. “I’m going to say this – and this is not my orders as a wingleader, this is my advice as a friend. I won’t hold you to it if you feel the need to disobey. But for Faranth’s sake, be careful if you choose to talk to Warden M’onk.”

Many of the riders here (Ai excluded, naturally) were young. Some of them wouldn’t have yet seen the less… savory parts of the Watch. The old boy’s club, the color politics, the friends in high places. “He has a lot of old friends in the Watch. A lot of old friends who won’t like hearing harsh words against him. If any of you confront him, you know that I'll back you up from here until the ends of Pern – but if you accuse him of anything without evidence, I might not be able to help you. And remember, how he treats the prisoners here won’t matter as much to the rest of Pern as how he treats the riders, crafters, and guards under his command. It’s whershit, but it’s true.”

That was a bit of a speech by J’car standards. He didn’t much go in for speeches. Huffing a little sigh, he finished with, “I just don’t want to see anyone ousted from the Watch on trumped-up charges – or worse, conveniently 'disappeared' like the weyrleader.”

"Mauled...?!" Ai took a drink of klah to hide the expression of incredulous outrage. Her eyebrows, however, shot up. "Only? None dead?"
That was absurd. With that logic, Zamanateth would have been dead several times over. A pincusion of Bolts. Really, now.
Zamanateth's voice was sad and crooning,
Ai wasn't sure if Zam was sad about the dead hatchling or about the fact that it hadn't killed anybody, but Hers was definitely slightly uncomfortable. That was noteworthy.

"I think then that we know why the young grey was shot." she said, with a little bit of acid. She might not like the idea of these strange colors. She might not even be unopposed to shooting the little ones if they proved unusually dangerous and abnormal. Nothing should have to live its life without a good set of traits. Mercy was fair. It was how she rationalized her disconfort, anyway.
But they seemed to be behaving like normal hatchlings, from reports.
The shooting may have been necessary, may have even saved lives. But perhaps, thought the goldrider, it might have been premature.

Ai frowned slightly, and hid it with another sip of Klah. Zamanateth's tone had turned quiet and charged.

"... on the subject of Warden M'onk" she lowered her cup briefly, "I would rather not see any of you in trouble over this, or worse. So, with the Wingleader's permission..." she nodded to J'car, "I will handle the 'interview' myself" she smiled mildly, a hint of slyness in the expression, "I think it is only polite, now that things have calmed down a little, for the new Weyrwoman to take tea with the Warden?" the smile grew. She would also be difficult to replace, and her disappearance would be difficult to orchestrate without serious attention being paid... and suspicion.
Not that she planned to upset him. She'd gently tease out what she needed.

Zam said, sitting up, her eyes a brilliant crimson.

"In the meantime, perhaps his wardens- the ones that head each prisoner Ward, would be good to interview? Any of those interviewed yet?" she asked, taking a bite of the bubbly pie, "Aside from the Weyrlingmaster, of course."

Zamanateth growled in her mind, and she ignored her with long practice.
she said quietly. Oh practice, how she loved thee.

"None dead~" Kr'stof waved his hand airily, lips pulled still into a pout. His arm rose a fraction to peer out at the group. "Well..." The greenriders gaze sneaked back over to Ai and that mild smile. It reminded him a bit of M'onk save for the fact that it lacked the 'I'm going to kill you' look to it. "I'm sure the two of you would make a lovely couple, ma'am. It's less likely there would be a mysteriously disappeared Weyrwoman than a Weyrleader. On that note - I volunteer to kidnap the interview with Secondary Warden C'tis. He's the bluerider, isn't he? I saw him at the hatching, huge and handsome, isn't he?"

Thin fingers flicked again and his arm fell, sipping at his klah. "With all due respect though, Weyrwoman, paying attention to the friendly warning of careful is likely still an excellent idea. Is anyone talking to the prisoners, if we're discussing danger and criminal behavior?"

Alia frowned at K'rstoff's off-hand dismissal of the whers on the sands, though it was less at the rider himself and more at the situation. "It doesn't bother you that that's even something they have to consider?" she asked. Eggs should never come to harm, no matter who their parents were. She was surprised that she was the only one who seemed disturbed by this, but maybe the others had come in with lower expectations.

After J'car's speech, she turned to Ai. "I'm more worried about you, 'weyrwoman'." And after what happened to the last one, she felt her concern was justified. Clearly it didn't matter what your rank or color was. She turned her head, recalling part of her conversation with Stella. "When I asked someone when the Warden first, um, changed." She didn't think using the word 'snapped' here would be appropriate. "They said it was right after Kaelyandra got here. I don't think Warden M'onk likes sharing power." she noted. "I'd watch your back."

As for her suggestion, "Should one of us accompany you?" she suggested. After all, they were technically here as her honour guard, it wouldn't be that unusual. "Mmm.. Only V'tyai." she acknowledged with a grunt. That had been fun. "But something tells me anyone with rank isn't going to talk to us." At least, that was the impression she'd got.

"You can learn plenty from people who aren't in charge."

C'per had been mostly listening up until that point, though his expression had been sharp - particularly as J'car recommended anyone going near M'onk take care. C'per had no interest in tangling with a wher - so to speak. He'd gone toe-to-toe with less-than-sane folks before (which reminded him - he'd need to get records from his contact back at Monaco, see if Wyndam was imprisoned at Warden's or not), and had no interest in that kind of cat-and-mouse game.

"Even if they don't talk, we have plenty to put together. Some of us have friends here. I imagine J'car will be able to get plenty of information from our ex-wingmate I'saak," he remarked cheerfully, grinning at his wingleader. "If he hasn't already."
PostPosted: Tue Apr 02, 2013 2:09 pm

a rumble accompanied the thought.

Ai hesitated. She was tempted to do that, but...

"I will be careful." she assured Kr'stof, her face crinkling with mirth. It did not occurr to her that her smile was similar at all to M'onks, even by contrast. They needn't worry about that 'couple' part either.

But she was a cunning fox. She certainly wasn't going to jump down his throat and, what, accuse him of being an a*****e? She had nothing to accuse him with, nothing specific, and why should she do so? It served no purpose.
She nodded to Alia, "Then I'll just have to make sure he knows that I will not overtly interfere with the balance of power... or whatever he imagines it to be."
Overtly being the key word.
"I think that, if you ask, they have to talk to you to an extent, correct?" Ai looked at Alia (though she was looking slightly off from the girl, thoughtfully)"It would look quite terrible if they avoided an interview. They likely won't say much, but what they won't answer will be as important as what they will."
As well as equally important. Where did they hedge to keep their jobs and lives intact? Where did they change the subject? Where did they lie or twist the truth? Where did their stories differ?
"I would like to note that even the same answer to the same question, given twice by different people, can be very powerful tools in this case. Especially if the answer at the top matches... or does not match... one at the very bottom... ... Of course, you know this." She added the last part. She was thinking out loud.
"Watchrider C'per has a very good point. I gather that many of the weyrlings have been spoken to at least once, but other prisoners and candidates and supporting staff?"
An idea was cooking in her mind.

Ai said to her dragon distractedly. Something about this investigation delighted her.
