Letters... Asch paused to think about that. He sighed, relenting a bit, especially as his brother started to get emotional.

"All right fine. I'll think about it."

But... what would he even say. It's not as if he could tell his father what he was up to. The idea was just... awkward. He had never written a letter to either of his parents before.

A small nod accepted the response. Luke knew as well as anyone how difficult it was to persuade Asch of anything, and the last thing he wanted now, on top of everything else, was an argument with his brother. He was reminded now, though, of his own task regarding their father. "I have to tell him too, I guess," he said, mostly to himself. "Somehow."

Asch didn't really desire an argument with his brother either. He was too weary for such a thing, and Luke was already messed up enough.

"Yeah," he then agreed with his twin. "He should know."

Other than that, he didn't really know what else to say.

He really didn't want to tell his father. Even if for different reasons, Luke shared Asch's reluctance to return home. Of course it wasn't a guarantee that he would be summoned home, and it wasn't as though he could be forced to go back, but still…

A quiet sigh, green eyes still downcast. "That's all I wanted to say, I guess. Probably could have just sent a message."

Asch sighed. He might have sharply commented about how pathetic his twin's self deprecation was, but he saw little point in it anymore. After all, there was nothing much more depressing than learning you might die. The red head grimacing at the idea of it.

"No, it's fine," he muttered. "I have something I've been meaning to do anyway."

And with that, Asch reached into a pocket and produced a luxury ball, offering it to his brother.

Luke received the item with all incredulity, holding it gingerly in his hands. "This is…" There was no need to finish the statement, for there was no doubt in his mind as to what the ball contained. He closed his fingers around it lightly, as though it could vanish just as easily as it had the first time - or as though it wasn't there at all. He raised his eyes with an expression of uncertainty, "I know there are a lot of things I don't know and that I don't understand, but it's fine to trust you, right?" As abrasive and generally unfriendly as Asch tended to be, somehow it just seemed that he had been helping more than hurting for quite some time.

Asch was glad to be rid of it actually. Every time he had let it out to try and feed Mieu or something, the Flareon tried to kill him. Thus Mieu didn't see the light of day very much while in his possession.

However, Luke's question drew a confused blink from Asch. His frown melting away just a little bit and only for a moment. He huffed, wondering if his brother was really serious.

"I wouldn't suggest trusting anyone in Team Rocket," he started. "But it's up to you. I could have hurt you and your friends a long time ago if I wanted to. But I do have my duty."

In other words, he didn't plan on hurting anyone. But if he was told to, he wouldn't really have much of a choice.

A nod, his hands unconsciously drawing more tightly around the luxury ball as it in fact did not suddenly vanish from his grasp. "But it's not what you want, right?" Asch had been invited to rely on the trainers before and that obviously was not an option under his circumstances, but Luke couldn't remember a time his brother had every clarified his personal alignment. The fact that he had, on his duty, stolen Rosie's Vaporeon and then returned it - and now returned the Flareon that had been stolen by another Rocket entirely - said much about the answer.

Asch looked a bit uncomfortable with that question, his hands gripping his own arms tightly as he looked away again. "It's not about what I want anymore," he told Luke. "I do what I have to do, and that's all."

No, what he wanted, and what needed to be done, were completely different. His desires no longer mattered, and were unattainable anyway.

"I don't want to think anything is hopeless," he said, eyes falling to the pokeball which, against hopelessness, had made its way back to him. "The past is the past, but we at least have some control over the future… right?"

"I've made my choices," Asch said resolutely, looking back to Luke. One thing was for certain. Nobody had forced him into doing anything that wasn't beyond his control. What happened to him when he was a child, had been beyond his control. But he was an adult now and able to think for himself, as was his brother.

"What about you?"

Somehow it didn't feel like the entirety of the answer - or maybe Luke just wanted there to be more. Either way, he could only accept it. It was nothing but selfishness to try to elicit the response he wanted to hear.

"I'll do what I can," he replied, but he quickly redacted the words with a slight shake of his head, amending them with more tenacity, "I'll do everything I can."

Asch nodded once, finding that answer acceptable. "Good. See that you keep that promise."

If he broke it and shriveled up into a pile of nothingness again, he would be pretty pissed. He was tired of seeing his brother like that.

"I plan to." The loss of his Flareon had been the beginning of a long series of events that had only been more and more painful, and he fully intended to make the fire-type's recovery the beginning of an upward spiral. Already something that had always seemed impossible had come to pass; finally hope seemed a little more accessible.

Again Asch nodded once. Figuring his job was done here, the young man turned to go without another word. This new development certainly gave him a lot to think about. He would have to keep a closer eye on Luke.
