Moon River was resting against the wall dabbing at her cheeks. She looked absolutely pitiful. The pride she wore like a lovely coat was shredded. The pegasus usually considered herself thick skinned when it came to her singing. Some phonies loved it others didn't but she never thought they thought such hurtful things of HER. These phonies she considered her friends but now she could see it was not reciprocated. What a fool she was...
She hushed her sniffles when she heard someone enter the hallway. The songstress peeked her head out behind the statue she was hiding in back of. What she couldn't believe was the phony who hurried after her was Fourseam Fastball. "W-What are you doing?" She asked quietly. "I-I know you don't like me. D-Did you come to m-mock me too?" He may not have said anything when she arrived upon the scene but what if he had been earlier? He had to have! She was so mean to him of course he'd want to say hurtful things. Right?

Fastball approached Moon slowly, his head down, his expression was grim, his bright eyes dropped. He stopped a good distance away from the other pegasus, suddenly very aware that he hadn't anything prepared to say to her. In his haste to find her, his slicked-back hair had come a bit undone, his tux had gotten off its previously perfect lines, and he looked more like the Fast he was every day.
When he saw her, her gem eyes so red, her pretty face so obviously hurt and humiliated, Fourseam Fastball could only think one thing:
He hated this gala.
He hated all these stupid galas. Nothing good ever happened in them.
"Hey," he said, inelegantly. "I'm sorry. That was really -- that was inexcusable in there. Your performance was amazing. It really was. And the rest, just -- forget about it."
He pulled a handkerchief out of his breast pocket and offered it to her. "I know we haven't really been friends, but, here."
There. It was all he could do. And if she chose to throw it back in his face, well, at least he'd have the satisfaction of knowing he tried.

Moon River looked him over through her blurry diamond eyes. She dabbed away the oncoming tears in hopes that they could be stopped before she drowned in them. From the looks of it, Fast had been stumbling about after her. Her. Her snooty mean self. No longer was he primped and pressed but back to being wild and untamed.
"It's fine...really. I haven't been the nicest to you...but...oh..." She paused and arched a brow at his sincere words. "Amazing? R-Really?" She took the handkerchief and smiled, a real true smile, at him. "Thank you..." Moon wiped away the tears and looked down at the piece of cloth. "You know...you're far too kind. You don't have a bad bone in your body do you?"

She wasn't that bad, this mare he'd thought was a she-devil, this horrible creature who'd turned her nose up at him several times, refused to learn his name, and loathed his entire presence. If he thought about every other interaction he'd had with her, this didn't make all that much sense. But all Fast could think right then was that Moon River maybe, just maybe, wasn't that bad.
"Well, ma'am, I do, but I try to get it all out on the field," he said with a faint grin, trying to tease one out of her. "That's the secret of how I put so much stuff on my fastball. Don't tell anyone or anythin', y'hear?"

Moon River stood up and peered back at him. "Ah...So that's how you do it." She laughed and made sure to add, "I promise no one will know. The least I can do is keep a secret."
"So...um..." She held the handkerchief up, "Do you want this back? I can wash it and give it back to you or something..." She shifted uncomfortably before the stallion. She felt tired and like she'd been rubbed raw after the incident but he was actually making her feel better. "I mean what I said though. Fourseam Fastball, you are a very nice phony even when I've treated you so horribly. I can't help but wonder how you can be but thank you. I...I appreciate it."

"You just keep that for now," said Fast, smiling faintly. "We're always running into each other, so... I know I'll get it back."
His smile grew as she said his name. It was the first time he'd ever heard her say it, although he'd introduced himself to her -- pointedly -- more than once.
It sounded nice in her voice.
"Well..." Fast said, feeling a touch awkward now, looking down, then up at Moon, then motioning to the door with his head. "Got to go back out there and make an appearance before I'm missed. Can I get you anything? A drink or a snack? Or are you gonna go back in, too?"
It was strange, all of it. He felt suddenly like he'd never met this mare, regardless of all their unpleasant history. And the setting was just too intimate, too quiet and upscale and romantic for what the conversation they were having and the type of tenuous acquaintances they were. He wanted to move away from all of it, to finish his duties at the gala and just go home, where Delta would ask him to talk about everyone's dresses and he could throw his tux aside and just go back to thinking about baseball.

Moon nodded and tucked the wet cloth away to wash later. She certainly didn't want Fast to have to deal with a tear-filled handkerchief. "We certainly do. Most of the time I found it dreadfully annoying when we'd cross paths but...I'm lucky we did this time."
She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. It was just a moment but that moment was all the time she needed to compose herself. "I'll be fine. I'm certainly not going to run away from some foul-mouthed ponies. I just needed a few moments."
Her wings stretched and fluttered before returning to sit prettily at her sides. She peered into the statue, able to make out a very faint reflection to guess if she looked decent or not. "I suppose this will do...Somewhat waterlogged but still fabulous." That mare's gaze returned to Fast and once more she grew quiet.
"Be honest with me..." Her voice was soft when she spoke, "Am I as terrible as they say?"

"Naw," was the first response out of Fast's mouth, gently spoken, but immediately after, the pegasus went quiet. His eyes were on the floor, and he seemed to be mulling the correct words. There was a long pause before he found them.
"You can be... a little less than nice to a phony," he said at last. He looked tired suddenly, and although he was being earnest, he seemed worried that his words might bring up another round of tears from the mare. "And you don't cut people a lot of slack. But you're not 'horrid,' nah. Just... focused on your work."

"Really?" She looked thoughtful and seemed to be mulling over his answer. At least it wasn't as bad as what the Wealthybuckets said. She certainly wasn't going to cry over it but it did make her think. "I suppose I'll have to work on it. I never really thought I was...well.." Actually she did know she was haughty, snooty, and prissy. Sometimes she was proud of herself for the snippy comments she easily threw at others. It was creative and funny! Plus they usually deserved it. Didn't they? To hear what the other phonies said about her hurt but she could be just like them.
She laughed lightly and shrugged, "I think you're being too soft on me but thank you." If she was one of the meanest phonies than Fast was the kindest. Why exactly did she dislike him so much? There had been something about him that had made her angry when they first collided as kids. Was it the usual offense: perhaps because she didn't think he liked her music? Hm... She couldn't even remember what the reason was now that they were having a civilized conversation. What a fool she had been.
If Moon River wanted respect, and not just for her voice, it looked like she'd have to work on her attitude. Why be nasty when you could be kind? Why dislike someone because they didn't agree with you? For the first time Moon River saw she needed to improve her personality. If Fast could be this way to a mare that had treated him so poorly couldn't she do the same?

Fast watched her as Moon became pensive, and all at once he felt both awkward and intrusive, like she needed a friend there and not a guy who couldn't stand her an hour ago. He felt well and ashamed of himself now -- he, who prided himself in his good nature! Who never got into a scuffle with any of the egos in the clubhouse, who took direction from coaches without ruffling any feathers! He latched on to his dislike of her and hadn't given it another thought until now.
Maybe she wasn't so bad. Maybe she could be nice, if she wanted to be.
It was a nice thought.
But all the same, he wanted nothing more than to be away from her. From this gala. From all this awkward mess.
"It's nothin', don't you worry about it," said Fast in his drawl, bobbing his head in a nod and giving Moon a tight-lipped smile. He took a few steps back, gesturing to the door. "But all the same, I should go back in now. You take care, alright? Enjoy yourself tonight. Could still be a good night, all things considered."
His smile relaxed as he neared the door. "Night, Moon River."

Moon River nodded to him, "Yes. Enjoy yourself and...um..thanks again." She then headed down the hall to look for a place to inspect her dreadful appearance. After a few minutes of primping she returned to the ball and actually mingled with the other phonies instead of waiting to be approached. A few times she'd look up and search for the white and red stallion but he was lost in the sea of colors. It had been a very...interesting...occurrence. The two of them conversing without either storming off. At the end of the night she was still pondering over Fast's words. Well, not just his words, but his actions towards her.
For the rest of the gala she made it a point to try and be kinder to the guests. She smiled and actually listened to what they had to say. Sure there were a few moments where she snapped and said something mean or complained that they were boring her BUT she was better than usual. Perhaps she could change for the better? In the end it was a good night, one Moon River would never forget.
