A less than ladylike snort was her only reply to that. "Just don't get any notions in that fanciful head of yours. I'll not be obeying your every command when you have your grand army all gathered up."

Rajani was trained for this coming war, of course. As much as anyone could be. But by no means did that mean she was looking forward to the fighting to come. Gathering information - even horrible, terrifying information - was one thing. Killing was something else. She was far from an innocent, but never before had she been forced to take a life, even if the enemy was only wolves.

A fierce strength and surety flooded her mind. She blinked and looked at Oberon, who met her gaze squarely. Her Guardian had no doubts about the days to come. He would fight alongside the other Guardians and they would be victorious. There was no room for doubt in the face of his unyielding conviction.

A small smile quirked her lips. He was right, of course. No point in fussing over the future. It would come whether they wanted it to or not.

Soibhan laughed and inclined her head to the other woman. "I wouldn't dream of it. I don't want to be your superior, Rajani. But I would like to be your friend. You've helped me, even though there was nothing in it for you. I appreciate that. I can also appreciate your intelligence, especially when considering this wild scheme of mine. So if I start stepping on your toes, please tell me."

Her father always chided her for her assertiveness even as he patted her on the back for it. He'd told her many times that she needed to learn when it was necessary and when it was a hindrance or annoyance. Maedoc had always been less than thrilled with her constant bossy attitude.

Thinking about her brother hurt and she grimaced, missing him.

"I assure you, I will," she said, and it only sounded a little like a threat. It would be strange, spending so much time with someone, sharing space and travel time and possibly even accommodations. It had been years since she had last done so. Back when Lana was still alive.

Suddenly, she felt very tired, as though every hardship she had faced and every bit of stress that now defined her life had all come together at once.

"If you'll excuse me," she said, and rose without waiting for a response. Sleep. Everything would be better in the morning.

If only she could believe it.

Soibhan watched the woman disappear up a staircase, Oberon following leisurely behind her. When the sound of a door closing reached her ears, the gaelic woman sighed and stretched like a cat, staring into the fire for a long time.

It felt strange, this desire to help these strangers, people that weren't her own. By all rights, she should have already been well on her way home. After all, she loved her family and clan more than anything.

So what made her want to stay here so badly? Was it truly a need for adventure? Some motherly instinct to protect those that couldn't protect themselves? Or was there something else at work here, pulling her strings?

She let her heavy lids flutter closed, settling more comfortably into the cushy wing chair. The warmth and crackle of the fire lulled her into a sleep full of glowing eyes and the howls of wolves.
