Face your demons

Magnetic Detective

It was true that she could feel cold, but it seldom bothered her that much-- still, she didn't move the jacket. She just got cozy under it, looking down at it through half-shut eyes, a soft smile at the corner of her mouth. She didn't want to show how much that had affected her. She also still had no idea what was happening, or why.

"Is that a threat, or a promise?" Amarus asked, looking up at him, her bells ringing. Her eyes skimmed across him, noting that he at least had some muscle tone; he must do something other than study! Either that, or he just studied really heavy books; she grimaced faintly for a moment at the prospect that all of his strength came from lifting too many of those hideous objects full of words.

Amarus' weakness, in case he hadn't noticed, was probably words. "A warm chair? That sounds nice," she mused, aloud. She smiled at him, really smiled, and looked away again to make it seem like it was no big deal he'd just offered her a place in his room to crash. She wouldn't offer the same; wherever he slept was definitely nicer than wherever she was.

"...I think my arc was higher," she finally replied, watching the stars drift down around them. She closed her eyes and tilted her face up to meet the ashes. "But yours was more beautiful," she admitted, softly; the smile hadn't quite left her face.

Just make this last a little longer. Just a bit longer, before she chalked it up to her aura and assumed he'd leave and never be back.

Zel smirked at her, looking at her sideways. Taking her left hand, he nibbled lightly on palm opposite of her thumb. "Promise," he smirked, keeping a hold of her hand and flashing her a toothy grin. "I don't make threats."

He nodded slowly as she seemed to accept his offer and he leaned a little more into her, smiling back and bowing his head. "I'll show you where it is after this, and I'll give you my both my skellyphone number so you can get in touch with me in my dorm, and my eyephone number so you can reach me on my eyephone." Smirking a bit he tickled her side lightly with his fingers. "That way you don't come knocking while I'm not decent."

Though, he thought with a slight flush - that it wouldn't be the end of the world if she saw him without a shirt - she already seemed to like how he looked.

He felt the heat rising to his face as she watched her, head leaning back to bask in the ashes of his firecracker. "Eh, pales in comparison to my company right now," he said, letting his head rest against the cloth nest.

Wait... WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY! His inner voice bristled. For one, she's a Year Two, for TWO you should be studying...

OH PISS OFF AND LET ME HAVE MY FUN!

"I believe its your turn," Zel chuckled softly, squeezing the hand in his for a moment before pressing the back of it to his lips. He didn't know why he felt so giddy and grabby with her... But he liked it.

Maybe it had something to do with that talk his father had given him about pumpkin patches and what not to do with ghouls... Admittedly he'd only half paid attention, but the warm feeling in his chest was too pleasant for this not to be a good thing. What part of it was her natural aura he didn't know - or care to be quite honest.

All he knew, is that she made him happy - even with her antics.

Turning his head to her he smirked. "But if you want to skip on the throwing things and just sit here and stare at the sky, I wouldn't mind that either..."

He let the sentence hang for a few more moments, his eyes looking around to make sure they were alone, before he leaned in and whispered. "Oh... and if you want... you can call me Aezeloth. But only when we're alone..."

He knew he shouldn't trust her like that yet - but there was just something about her - the way she moved, the way she smiled. Even her crazy ideas - that just seemed to put him at ease.

In fact...

He hadn't been this comfortable in a very, very long time.

Amarus watched him nibble on her palm through her mostly-closed eyes, perpetually smiling softly. She shut her eyes all the way for a moment again, and mumbled: "Really? Making threats is fun." Well, what could she say? It was true! ... and she often did make threats. Not against people she cared for, not usually, unless she was joking. But the times someone had hurt her friends: then she threatened. And she followed through, more importantly. That was her favourite part.

"Oh, good, you can program them into mine... and turn it on, I guess. I haven't used it in a long time," she explained. She almost never used it, really. But apparently she'd have to start. "Why would I knock? I will just walk through your wall," she joked. For once, her ghostly traits were more funny than terrible. For a moment, anyway; she made herself sad, reminding herself that she was just... a ghost. She didn't even know if she had a soul, or anything. And a soul must be a beautiful thing, mustn't it?

"Besides, I'm sure it wouldn't be so bad," she teased, opening her eyes momentarily to glance at him, her mouth curled into a wicked smile again. She didn't realize he'd been watching her feel the ashes fall down like snow. And as he complimented her, or what she assumed must be a compliment (she'd never received one before, not like that), she found herself not sure as to how to reply. Again.

So instead, she rested her head against his shoulder, quietly. When his lips touched her hand, the tightness in her chest resumed. Tightness, and an overwhelming urge to reciprocate the gesture-- where was this coming from? She'd never had a family to tell her about life, about affection, about souls, about any of it.

She'd wandered into Amityville, alone, and disoriented, something about souls and how important they were-- she still didn't understand what had happened that night. "Who would skip throwing things in favour of staring?" Amarus complained, before looking off at the sky again, and leaning away briefly to light and throw another firecracker. It seemed like she was still aiming to arc it the highest, not discarding her original plan to mimic his pretty display.

When he offered her his name, Amarus took a moment to let it register. "Are names not... important, to Demons? Very important," she suggested, surprised. "A secret," she acknowledged; her word was ironclad.

And her face looked dark, for a moment, and then mirror-surface blank again as she looked away and reached into her inner robe to withdraw a pin with her emblem on it. She hid it in her hand, and pressed it into one of his hands without looking at him, leaning back into the blankets. "Don't make me regret vouching for you," she threatened, closing her eyes again as she got cozy. "See? Threats are fun."

Eyes shut, curling up under the coat again, she draped one leg over Zel's legs. She already seemed half-asleep.

"Oh don't get me wrong, a good thread can be bloody fun, but I don't think I need to threaten something I know will happen," he smirked at her his hand squeezing hers for a moment before he nodded again.

"Sure, if you wanna hand it to he I can do it right now," he said with a smile as he leaned back a bit more in their nest, relaxing as she leaned into him. When she tossed her next cracker he smirked. "Good throw," he said, and as she was returning, he lit his next one and threw it hard, it just went shy of her last spot, and he cursed under his breath. "Eh, close..."

When she spoke of the importance of names, he nodded his head slowly. "I trust you, I see no reason why you should not have my secret." He blinked when she reached into her robe and slipped the pin into his hand. Squeezing it for a moment, he took a minute to look at it, before reaching into his own pocket and trading it for one of his own. As she leaned against him, she slipped his own into her hand, and planted a soft kiss on her cheek. "Thank you," he said softly.

"I will not make you regret it," He smiled before he leaned back once more, letting her toss her leg over his. He didn't mind at all - in fact, she was more than welcome to crawl in his lap if she wanted. Not that he'd say that out loud.

Closing his eyes for a moment, he sighed contently, a hand absently moving to her hair to gently stroke it. He wasn't even aware he was doing it.

Amarus' eyes would have glinted in a faintly frightening way, had they been open, when she finally added: "I often threaten with exactly what I intend to do."

She pulled her eyePhone from the folds of her outer robe (where she was storing it, who knows?...) and handed it over to Zel without missing a beat. It was, in fact, turned off. She watched his throw and nodded in approval, acknowledging his success silently. Close enough!

She arched one brow at him when he suggested she could have his secret. "Secrets are fragile, don't you think? No one trusts me with anything fragile," she cautioned him, as if trying to keep him safe from her own self. She knew herself better than anyone else, right? So of course she'd be wary.

Still, she smiled again as he gave her one of his own pins. A name and a pin? She hardly had anything else to give him. She put that pin inside her inner robe, tucked against her skin. She felt a strange sensation spread through her cheek, where Zel had kissed it, and reached up one hand to brush against the same spot. "And I thought you were going to be boring," she admitted, laughing quietly to herself as she got comfortable.

"Do you know any good stories?" Amarus asked, before very gently shifting so that she was laying mostly on him to enjoy the hair stroking. Very nearly entirely on him, for what it was worth. She yawned, nestled her head against him, and pulled one of the copious blankets on top of them.

She probably wouldn't stay awake much longer. Not because she was bored, this time, but rather... because she was happy.

Zel chuckles and nods as she makes her statement, “Usually the best way to do it, since at least they know you mean business...” He took her phone, and turned it on, and quickly input his two numbers for her, slipping it back to her when he was finished. “I'm available anytime,” he smiled to her, his fingers working her scalp as he lay there with her.

Zel chuckled and he couldn't help but smirk when she said no one trusted her with anything fragile. “Well they're stupid then, cause I don't see a reason not to trust you,” He really couldn't. She didn't seem the type to go and betray his trust – he just... felt that she was trustworthy.

Chuckling with her he smiled. “Well I'm glad you find me not boring then,” he said as she shifted so that she was laying on top of him, one hand continued to stroke her hair, the other moved to her back to rub.

“Hmmm... I think I know one that might be worth telling,” Zel chuckled, closing his eyes and thinking for a minute.

“Once there was a Kingdom of Stairs. It wasn't a happy kingdom, it wasn't full of rainbows and unicorns or sparkles and rainbows. In fact, people feared the kingdom, and rightly so – for it was dark and full of shadow – and those that lived there were strong and fierce fighters, ready to enact vengeance upon the order of their king.

The people there loved their lot in life – they enjoyed being strong fighters and their favorite pastime was the betterment of their martial skills. They named themselves after abstracts, and they sought to embody these ideals. Now there were two of these warriors – Justice and Judgment. They were strong in their own rights, but together, they were unstoppable. None could face them in battle and win.

One day, a tournament was held to determine who the rightful king of all the lands would be – and the Stair Kingdom fought valiantly to secure victory for their king – but alas, it was in vain, and their land fell to the might of others – but its people were hardy, and Justice and Judgment went down fighting.

It is said, to this day – if you listen closely in the darkest of nights, you can hear them fighting still – fighting for all eternity as a pair – for they were more than just partners in battle, they were partners in life. So when the end came – they joined each other as partners in death, forever fighting by the others side until neither ideal exists.

For where Justice goes, Judgment follows, and where Judgment goes, Justice follows – two sides of the same card, forever fighting to save the other.”

Opening an eye he smiled at Amarus. “It's not the best story ever, but it's the best I have right now...”
