"The first doe-chief became as such by using the wits Frith blessed her with." It was an old tale, one passed down to kittens by the warren's storytellers. He'd heard it many times over in his youth and while there wasn't quite time to tell it in the typical storyteller fashion, he could at least give the curious three a run down.
"She cleverly became the chief's favorite doe and he was far too fat to leave his own burrow. She knew more of warren life than he and often reported to him. The other rabbits began reporting to her and she slowly became more chief to them. After the old rah passed away, it was only natural for her to become the next leader." He explained patiently, casting a wary eye towards the down's proper now and again. There was no sign of owsla, though, and he thanked his lucky stars.
"The current rah's daughter inherits the title - but it is never without merit. She has to prove herself first and must serve in the owsla. She must prove she is fit to lead before she can lead, y'see? All rabbits have to prove themselves to climb in rank, with no exceptions. Anyway, our warren is perfectly situated near plenty of fresh flay and running water. I hope that helps you understand?"
