It was lucky he wasn't brave enough to do so, or she might have skipped away like a frightened fawn. Although she had spoken more eloquently and for longer than she often did, she wasn't so comfortable with him that he could be forward, but she was on a fair way to thinking him everything good that a stallion should be, and she wished to know him better.
'You're very welcome sir.' she said, looking up at him from under her mane which had slipped across again. She shook her head gently, arranging it better than took a look around before speaking to him again.
'Would you..would you wish to take a walk with me?' Nalani asked tentatively. She wanted to know more about him, and if she were not always looking at him she might be less shy talking about her own self.

Izefiah felt like he was soaring. His heart was up in the clouds where he had never gone, and while he wasn't quite sure what to do with himself, he was happy. He smiled brightly at Nalani and was just so glad that he'd had the chance to meet her. Even if they never saw each other again, she had certainly brightened his spirits and given him a new outlook on his wings. Perhaps if she thought they were so wonderful, they weren't that awful after all.
She tossed her head to shake her mane from her face, and once again Izefiah was struck by how beautiful she was. "I would love to take a walk with you," he answered her question, bowing his head. "Where would you like to go? Any where would be perfect with you accompanying me." He spoke earnestly, completely steadfast in that statement. It wasn't mere flattery.

Nalani blushed as he smiled at her and cast her eyes to the side, trying to compose herself. She wondered at herself, thinking that she had learned to control her emotions after that first time, when she had met that stallion that was as much a gentleman as Izefiah was. The mare felt the same happiness that she had made a good acquiantance, but was determined to keep steady and not fancy more in her feelings than she should feel.
'I am pleased, I will enjoy your company also Izefiah.' she said, turning on the spot and thinking for a moment.
'If am correct in thinking, I am sure there is a small lake not far from here, it's a fair spot, especially if the sun hits the water in the right way. Would a walk there be okay?' she waited for his assent before slowly walking in the general direction, lifting her tail as she moved so it would stay out of the damp.
'Do you have a large family?' she asked, once they were walking together.

Izefiah found it quite endearing how proper she was, and he was quite thankful of it too. He'd never really learned how to speak to mares. His father certainly wasn't an example in that department; he was far too gruff. This took the pressure off though.
Nalani said she'd be pleased to have his company and Izefiah grinned, glad to hear it. She suggested they walk toward a lake and he agreed so they started in that direction. He was glad it was such a lovely day. He might not have come across Nalani if it wasn't.
"I guess you can say that," he said, glancing over at her as they walked. "My father has 3 children and his lifemate has 3 as well. I guess that makes 8 of us, 9 if you count my mother. I only really see my father and sister Adaeze though. Occasionally I see Madhi and her son Euthyphro. How about yourself? Do you have many siblings?"

There, she found it easier already, her tail swishing as they walked, always mindful of holding off the ground however, listening as he spoke and then replying when he asked about her family in turn.
'I have a few; four brothers and one sister.' she replied, daintily skirting around a muddy puddle that was in her path. After she had passed it, Nalani moved back to Izefiah's side.
'My mother and father are deeply attached to one another, and are the best parents I could ask for.' she said, trying not to sound prideful, for she knew how lucky she was to have such warm and supportive parents.
'My brothers are wonderful, if not a little overprotective.' the mare added, casting a sideways glance at the stallion, before facing front and watching where she was stepping. 'A couple are watchful of me, and my elder brother Kodah especially likes to keep an eye on me. Likes to make sure I am only seeking out the right sort of company' she smiled a little.

Izefiah listened as Nalani spoke about her family. It was obvious how much she cared for them, love and warmth absolutely lit up her face as she spoke. He dipped his head, ears flicked forward as he continued to listen, lifting his own tail to avoid the mud puddle. He had sometimes imagined when he was a foal that he had a family as close as hers: a father that loved him and treasured him, a mother that was present and loving and kind. He loved his family dearly, and things had been getting better with Mahdi around, but still he couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy. He resolved to treat his own children the way he wished he had been raised, with a kind and caring hand.
When she spoke about her brothers being protective, Izefiah couldn't help but grin. "That's how brothers are," he told her with a knowing nod of his head. "I'm the same way with my own sister. It's a brother's duty to protect the sensibilities of his sister."

Nalani had to respond to that; on behalf of herself and Izefiah's sister (though she did not know the mare), it would not do even for her gentle nature to let that one slip by unchallenged.
'Do you brothers think your sisters all so lacking in sense?' she asked, trying to sound as placid as she normally did, but it was one of the few subjects that could try even her patience. Much as she loved her brother, she did feel like he looked over her shoulder even when he wasn't there!
'Forgive me, but I would like to think that my time in the world has given me sense enough to manage my own affairs. Concern and care become cloying when they are applied too liberally. I believe I have sense enough, do you not think me capable?' she asked him, pausing for a moment to take stock of his answer in his face as well his words.

Izefiah's eyes went wide and he just about stumbled over his words to correct himself. "What? No, oh no!" he said quickly. "I just meant that brothers will worry about their sisters and want to protect them--no matter how capable they are." It was true, Adaeze was likely far more capable than he was, and much less socially awkward, even if she was a bit strange. She at least wasn't crippled with self-doubt. And well, he didn't even know his other sister that well, she had chosen to stay with their mother, but he assumed she was just as independent as Adaeze.
"Oh, Nalani, of course I think you're quite capable to handle your own affairs!" he cried, horrified that he had seemingly offended her. That was the last thing he had wanted to do. "You're a very intelligent and independent mare. I'm sure your brothers just feel the same as I--they simply don't want to see you get hurt."
He hoped and prayed she wasn't too angry with him. He honestly hadn't meant to offend.

She was relieved by his answers, glad that he truthfully didn't believe that stallions and especially stallion siblings should be so overbearing and think themselves right in wanting to know a mares, or sister mares every concern.
'It could be the other way around, I am sure there are many mares who could protect their brothers. Whether pride would allow that I cannot comment.' Nalani replied thoughtfully, then attended to his latter words.
'I don't claim to be a fighter, and hope I never have to prove myself right. But I think in matters of the mind and heart I can appeal to my own character and sense. I am pleased..' she said, blushing furiously now, almost regretting being so plain speaking just then, even if it had given rise to some pretty compliments. 'Thank you..' she ended softly, not knowing how to respond to his assertions that he 'didn't want to see her hurt' with anything more than that and a hesitantly grateful look.

Izefiah smiled when Nalani said that there were mares who could protect their brothers and bobbed his head up and down in a nod. "You're quite right," he agreed. "My sister would protect me, just as I protect her. And my friend Neela, I'm certain she would do the same for her brothers. God knows she's stood up for me more than once." Surprising himself, he found he didn't really mind talking to her about Neela.
He nodded again, taking a step closer to her. "That's what I meant," he said in earnest. "Your matters are your own and you can decide how to deal with them of your own violation. I'm sure that you make level-headed and thoughtful decisions." Not like himself. He had spent far too much time listening his own father and letting him make decisions for him. Now that he'd decided to go it on his own, he often stumbled over himself, not knowing what he should do.
Slowly though, he was getting better at it.

By this time their hooves had taken them to the lakeside, and she stepped carefully down towards the water, looking across it and towards the horizon. It was usually a pretty view, but today the distant hills were shrouded in mist, which was slightly disappointing. She didn't dwell though, turning to Izefiah and replying to what he had just said.
'You have a good relationship with your sister, it is good when siblings look out for each other..when one has need.' That Nalani could admit, even if she did feel smothered occasionally.
'Oh, you have a female friend?' she was curious, and she had to admit for the first time wondered if this gentleman had a significant other. The tiny rebellious streak that was usually weighed down by her nature and manners hoped he did not.
'I hope so. I mean, I decided to talk to your good self. My brother Kodah would have had me make my excuses and walk away.'

Izefiah followed Nalani down to the lake's shore, stepping daintily, wary of slipping and falling into the freezing water. Giving the mare accompanying him a smile, he dipped his head to take a refreshing drink. His ears pricked forward when she spoke to him and he lifted his head again.
"That we do. I love my sister dearly. She means the world to me." Izefiah beamed, thinking of Adaeze. His sister was sweet and kind. He would be lost without her. She'd kept him sane when living with Auster became particularly troublesome.
"Neela is my best friend. She has been since we were foals." He smiled faintly and said more to himself than to Nalani, "She's trying for her own foals now. It's hard to imagine."
"Well," he said, his voice booming now, smiling much wider as he moved right on past that topic, "I'm glad your brother isn't here then. I'm rather glad you decided to stop and talk with me."

Nalani liked hearing his praise about his sister; family meant alot to her and she was pleased to see that in those she would call friend. She smiled up at him.
'My older sister is a character, I don't get to see her as much as I would like.' Truthfully she was closest with her brothers and her mother, though she would like to have a real close sister relationship. There was always a chance her mother and father would have children once more, she knew there had been some talk to that effect.
'I am glad as well.' she said softly, shying a little as he seemed to get carried away and spoke louder. 'Though I should be getting back soon, or my brother will come searching for me.'
Nalani worried that Kodah would do so, and she wanted to spare Izefiah a cross examination, especially as her brother would jump to conclusions that had not been formed. She did want to see more of Izefiah however.

Izefiah had been smiling as Nalani spoke about her sister and brothers. He'd always wished he was closer to his family. He was recently estranged from his father, and unfortunately that meant Adaeze as well. He couldn't remember the last time he'd seen his mother or Quintessa, and he certainly wasn't close to Madhi or her children. He thought that mabye Auster and Madhi were trying for more foals themselves, but at this rate, he might not even be there if they did.
But that had been his decision, and he could not regret it. It had been time for him to strike out on his own. Perhaps some day he would go back, but not anytime soon.
His smile slipped a bit though when Nalani said she should get back. "Oh, I suppose you should," he murmured, nodding. "I shouldn't keep you." He bowed his head and came back up smiling. "Thank you for your company. It was certainly a pleasure."

Nalani shook her head; 'You have not kept me, I have been happy to spend this time and get to know what I have about you.' she said with a smile to reassure. She would have been happier to stay longer, and in the spirit of wanting to cultivate an honest relationship with the stallion she spoke of what she was thinking and to degrees feeling.
'I found your company equally as pleasant, I hope I can see you again? I would like to introduce you to my mother, she would enjoy meeting you I am sure, and my brother pays heed to her opinion if she expresses it firmly enough, and would not pry if I were seen in your company.' she lowered her gaze, wondering what he would think of her request, realising it was formal, but that was how she was, and any sort of relationship would go easier if her relations knew and approved of it.
