Well, that certainly wasn't the reaction he was looking for. He blinks a few times, his tail flicking slowly in thought. "I will not argue your claim, I know I am different. And, indeed, the misst is everywhere here. But...yesss, you are beautiful. Do you not believe it yoursself?"

"Me? Beautiful?" She said in mocking disbelief. "I would certainly hope I'm not something as trivial and boring as 'Beautiful.' Is everything in the Swamp based so purely on looks?" She asked, amused.
"What if I were a thief? A murderer?" She asked, her tone almost playful as she circled around him. "A cannibal?"

Now who was pulling the mean joke? Shiver looked uncertain for a moment, before her features and voice registered as being amused. He gave a bit of a nervous laugh. "Well then, how about ravishing? Exquisite? Resssplendent...?" He grins. "And, I would not care at all... though I would prefer you not thieve anything of mine... except maybe my heart? Not if you are a cannibal, of courssse." he chuckles.

She chuckled, entertained by this buck. "My, what a clever tongue you have." She said, actually smiling softly behind the skeletal markings.
She thought for a moment, shifting almost shyly on her hooves in the shallows. "Perhaps...you would like to join me for a walk?" She asked quietly. "I would like to hear more about the Swamp, and of you."

"More than you know," he teases, emboldened a bit now. "Oh, yess" he replies, "I would like that. You haven't been to other partss of the sswamp? Only here?" Most intriguing. Unfortunately, his watersnake was not intrigued, and with an unhappy hiss, slithered down Shiver's back and down to the water, deciding to look around by himself, without the chatter.

"My siblings discourage wandering into the Swamp. We're all different, you see." She says softly, steps slow and easy through the shallow water, making sure to keep pace with the buck to not leave him behind.
"Well, I suppose more different than usual. I was born here in these marshes, and I like it here. Usually swamp kin aren't very kind to us." She added, watching his water snake slither off with an unhappy hiss.

"Pfft, it does not matter what otherss think. I live in the swamp, and yess, I mosstly keep to mysself, but it iss not for what otherss think of me. I have gone to gatheringss at timess, and no one hass shunned me as of yet. Either way, I do not mind being thought of as sstrange, you cannot let such beliefss get to you." He slogs along after her, definitely not as used to this marsh as she is, but is trying his best at keeping up. "Are mosst of the marshess like this?" He eyes the rather desolate terrain, not used to such open spaces, especially with shallow water. He idly wonders if the fishing is good here, as well as the 'treasure' hunting he has high hopes for.

"I am not so bothered by what others think- mostly how they act." She said, stepping over a fallen log. "If we were treated with some civility, we would love to call the Swamp our home as well. Often, however, we are subjected to ridicule and acts of violence." She pauses for a moment in her words.
"My older brother was the runt of his family. He was often teased and bullied, and they even sent a pack of boars after him. The boars broke many of his bones, and tore off flesh from his face... Nobody tried to help him. If my older sister had not found him, he probably would not be with us."
She looks to him when he asks about the marsh, smiling softly. "It takes a little getting used to, I imagine. Mostly, it's just like this. Calm. Quiet. Nothing to bother you besides the occasional frog and snake." She craned her head to a lower level, pawing at something in the shallow weeds, the light making it glitter. "Beneath it's barren face, however, are many treasures." She shifted to the side, allowing him to take the small piece of raw gold ore she had found.

Shiver frowns. "I am ssorry to hear thiss. Perhapss I am lucky to not have had thiss happen to me." He finds himself admittedly curious to meet these siblings of hers, as he is not the type to be bothered by different looks at all. He forced his idle (and morbid) mind to stop wondering what a kin with a ripped face would look like, and paid attention to the rest of her words. Frogs were yummy, but he'd never eat a snake. Slither would probably disown him. "Any fish?" he asks, peering down. His attention is attracted by her pawing at a shallow, and at the shiny bit he blinks and peers closer, his head lowering to, of all things, wrap his tongue around it. He plopped his bum in the shallows, and set the gold thing on his hoof to stare at, using his tongue to turn it over and investigate further. It was the "normal" way for him to check things out, but at the moment he didn't seem to think about it possibly grossing out his company. It had before... Finally he snakes his tongue back in, and looks up at her. "Thiss is mosst interesssting...I have not ssseen anything like it before."

The strange doe watched him, fascinated at the way he used his tongue to so easily lift the small bit of rock. Doesn't it taste strange, she wondered, but did not ask. She found it strangely endearing, his childlike wonder.
"I often find many rocks like that here. Sometimes it is even different colors." She said. "We have had Swampkin come to our marsh to look for things like this. They take quite a bit of it, too." She paused, giving a shy smile. "You can keep it, if you'd like."

Shiver gives no indication of noticing he's being watched with such fascination, though it's unsure if he would mind. He prods at it a little longer, and then glances up at her. "It is quite fassscinating... I will have to sssearch around myself a bit later..." He blinks further at her offer, and smiles a bit. "Perhaps later, when Slither has returned, it is easier when he is along to transssport things, as he can coil around them on my back." He leaves the nugget in the spot she unearthed it, for now. "You all do not mind when others take your treasuress? Or do you not view them as sssuch?"

"Well, the Marsh does not belong to us alone, even if it is our home. She gives her treasures to whomever seeks them." She said, walking along beside the buck at an easy pace.
"Besides, we've found plenty between the three of us. To take everything would be quite selfish."

"That iss a good view to have." He nods sagely, and follows along again. "Even though we sseek treasuress, there iss no point in taking more than one or two of each we find..." He pauses, then grins a little. "Bessidess...our den would be too full for uss to live if we did that."

Marrow chuckled softly, as her own cave had gotten to that point a few times in her life. "We try not to disturb the larger bones. It is unwise to unsettle the tired spirits of those long passed." A roll of thunder sounded in the distance, even as a few rays of bright, warm sunlight filtered through the thick clouds overhead, warming their backs.
"Your family...they will not worry that you are gone?" She asked softly.

He nods sagely at her comment about spirits, although he isn't quite sure he believes such things. The only "spirit" he met turned out to be a prank. Still, it's best to be polite. This was the longest conversation he'd had in a long while, as he usually ended up scaring other does off on accident. "Oh, I only live with Sslither right now. My children are grown and living their own livess. I might ssee them once in a great while."
