Saain frowned thoughtfully as the eggs thoughts turned from cheerful excitement to a skittering stop on the matter of her son. Well, more that the egg was questioning not her fitness as a mother but more that she had a hatchling... son. Would that stop her from impressing? The dragon hatchling didn't seem upset but more... puzzled. No, it had shifted again to an pleasant mix of eagerness and excitement. Such a darling little hatchling.

She pulled away, thoughtful and walked around the clutch trying to decide. Her experience with the Marvelous Dancer egg had opened her eyes to a possibility she hadn't thought about. Saain shook her head, curls bobbing and decided to attempt a soft looking egg. The Winter Visitor Egg seemed a good choice, with the light and dark grey and tiny spot of yellow.
She gently reached down to touch it.

Dawwwwwwwwwww! Leevi grinned at the pale egg. At first, the sheer sensation of another mind looming over his was frightening but, somehow, the presence managed to be comforting. It was a bit like a cuddle of the mind, an all-encompassing capacity to love and care for everything. Yeah. He could understand a mind and heart like that.

“Aww, no, sweethearts, I didn't mean that,” he tried to coo at the egg without actually being heard. “You're great. Just wait until you're hatched. You'll show everyone.” He opened his mouth to continue to talk at the little egg, but someone else approached. It always felt weird to just... keep talking at something that couldn't answer when there was another person right there. He smiled shyly at the redheaded man.

“Friendly egg, isn't it?” he commented when Joscelin touched the shell. “A bit overwhelming, but very friendly.”

~.~

What. What was this. Meera's face froze and not just because she was afraid that her love of dancing would be more out of the closet than C'ross (there; she said it. Well, thought it), but because eggs didn't even have groove thangs. She wasn't entirely certain what a groove thang was, but the egg made it plain. It didn't just expose it's groove thang, it covered it with sequins and sparkles and continued to groove its thang all over the place.

Still... her lips twitched into a smile, practically against her will. It was hard to be annoyed at such a cheerful egg. It seemed prepared to take on the world and would do it to a beat of its own.

“Here's hoping you keep up that attitude when you realize what you're up against,” she said, patting it one last time. Well. Other eggs to touch.

~.~

Then suddenly Gustav.

There probably should have been some sort of follow-up to those three words but, the simple fact was, it was hard to follow up Gus with anything. The wher didn't even really do anything besides appear at the entrance of the Hatching grounds. The large brown's eyes were carefully covered with smoked glass, but seeing wasn't necessary at all. Neither were words.

He simply had to be.

In this case, he decided the best place for him to be was away from the clutch but still close enough to tear anyone in half. Not for disturbing the eggs. Just because he liked to.

Although, in this case, he knew he had to wait until someone did something wrong. Humans were so damn picky. Don't kill now, kill NOW, noooo not that person, the other one... the brown wher settled down on the warm Sands with the attitude of a mountain that was prepared to wait forever for a chance to avalanche.

Really, with a wher like Gus hanging around, the handler practically became a sidenote. Or might have, had the handler not been one Taavetti. Taavi didn't walk. He sauntered into the grounds, peering around it with the attitude of a gentleman walking through a garden. Although, in this case, he took the time to bow to the goldrider and her Gold, on the basis that he really didn't want to get mauled by anyone. He was pretty sure that dragons couldn't maul people, but, really, why take a chance like that?

He was busy being prepared to be mauled by V'tyai, thank you very much.

“Hey, Vit!” he said cheerfully and loudly, not at all caring about an audience. “Got you some food here, cos if I know you, you haven't eaten today yet.” Without waiting for an answer, he pressed a meatroll into the other man's hands. The important thing in dealing with Wardens and V'tyai's was to always keep them guessing.

Joscelin, breath deep pushing the rejection away. After seven sisters and his mother, he spoke the language of polite disdain. "Friendly would not be the word I would choose." He shut his eyes, gathering some will and kept his face neutral and relax. It wasn't the end of the world, it was one egg out of thirteen. Relax. He idly played with a loose curl, before tucking it back in to the braid the best he could, opening his eyes to give Leevi a once over. "Perhaps it just likes you better. You seem to be the type to attract the mothering sort," he said, tone pleasant but eyes lingering on the other's face with a slight c**k of brow that spoke the hidden language that he was being a catty b***h.

He shifted, promptly ignoring Leevi and focused on the little round pink and gray egg next to the one he had just touch. Perhaps he would have better luck? He reached and touched the Group Hug egg and nearly recoiled, face scandalized. What? Had he just been glomped by an egg?

At the back of the 'sands' Lin was taking her time, observing the other candidates before choosing an egg. Actually, maybe she was just working up the nerve to go and touch one of the things. That gold was, well, large. Nervously, Lin bowed and approached the first egg whose appearance caught her eyes. It was little, pale and speckled, like a bird's egg. It was pretty and appealed to her. She reached out and touched it with her hand.. which she quickly pulled back, after she felt like she'd been whacked in the face with a wall of belligerent rage. Lin withdrew her hand and shook it as if she'd been burned. She didn't expect something like that from an egg. Well!

Instead, Lin turned to another, friendlier coloured egg, hoping it would be less.. shocking. The blue and light blue egg was similar to the Hunter in the pattern it wore on its top, but more colorful. And larger. Not that Lin (being a small one herself) ever put much faith in one's size. Those little ones, they'll fool ya alright! Hoping to have more luck with this one, Lin bent down, hand poised over the Cheerful Sneak-Thief egg, when..

'Friendly egg, isn’t it?'

Oh, hello? Lin was usually tuned in to those around her, so when she heard the keywords indicating a safe and pleasant choice, it caught her interest. Her hand, which had been wavering over the Sneak-Theif egg, dropped to her side as she stepped casually over to the Preening Princess egg, trying not to look like she had been drawn to it by their conversation alone.

She was about to touch the egg when she heard the other respond. She could tell by the tone of his voice that he was annoyed. She hesitated, shifting her gaze to the young male covertly, to read if there was real alarm or just annoyance on his face. It seemed he’d had a different experience. Still, she was already here, so she wasn’t going to back out now. Maybe it wasn't the egg's fault? Maybe it was something he said? After all, she'd heard rumors that people’s emotions could affect the eggs, as impossible as that sounded to her. Motherly, huh? Lin smiled, and let happy, motherly thoughts fill her mind. She wanted to put it in a welcoming mood.

A light laugh burst from Rokana before he could curb it. He had underestimated the eggs, their intelligence and directness. He'd keep an eye on this little dragon after it hatched, curious to learn more about it even if it was rather obvious that the dragon inside would not be his. He stood, composing himself as he brushed a stray lock of hair behind his ear. Well, which one next, that was the question, wasn't it? He looked over the eggs, watching the other candidates with care. He would touch all of the eggs, of that he was sure. Two seemed to stand out to him. The first was a rather large egg with a blood red, striped shell, and the other a dark crowned speckled egg. By the egg, a new thought dawned. What if he got one of those huge bulky bronzes, like the warden? His nose wrinkled at the thought. While a bronze would undoubtedly be powerful, he couldn't help but think of them as bulky brutes. He had drifted over toward the speckled black-crowned egg, the Little Hunter, and placed his hand atop the dark patch that crowned the egg. There was something about its boldness he found intriguing, and something told him that the dragon's size would never be an issue, not with an attitude like that. He had something to prove, and for a moment, Rokana was unsure wether he was thinking of the dragon, or himself.

Canoake had heard there was going to be a Touching and that some of the prisoners were going to be allowed. This peaked her curiosity enough that she decided she was going to attend. After the conversation she had with the healer Leevi, the weaver girl hoped that there would be some life within the shells. She stayed away from the others as they all went forward to touch, stroke, whatever to the eggs. Bowing to the gold and her rider, though not meeting their eyes, she moved forward.

The Marvelous Dancer Egg caught her eyes first. Not only because of it's size but because of its lovely colors, like the flames of sunset. Sidestepping past several other candidates, Canoake specifically ignored them. As of now, they were all competition to her. Moving up close, she boldly stuff her left hand on the egg. It was all but yelling at her to stroke it, admire it. And wasn't she a pretty little thing? Pleased, Canoake easily knew how to handle those wanted her attention or thought her pretty. "Why hello there! I see you wish someone would pay attention to you. Don't worry, I am here now but I can't stay long." Almost leisurely, she stroked the egg, cooing to it. When she thought she had given it enough attention, Canoake bent close. "Don't worry, not too much longer in there." And then left the egg.

Stepping to the right, she saw the Emperors Groove Egg , with it's deep blue shell and bright green markings. It seemed that the three eggs in a row were all clamoring for attention. Nothing wrong with that. If you didn't stand out then life passed you by and Canoake did not want to be passed by or stay stuck at Warden's. She would see Pern again. Resting her hand against the feather-like marking, Canoake could easily imaging this dragon shaking it's tail and hopping around to a different beat. Giving a bit of a wiggle herself, the weaver girl admired the coloring of the shell. "Will you dance for me once you hatch? I could make you something pretty once you get the world." A little pat and she was on to the Noisy Socialite Egg.

And it was noisy for sure! Canoake tried to keep a snicker from escaping as she touched the egg. Not exactly friendly, it was more like a person just waving their hands and shouting jibberish. "If you don't want to make sense, then no one will pay you any mind." She wasn't sure if the egg quieted or was just sulking for a moment before it resumed it's noisy chatter. Almost like a young child. "Alright, but I warned you."

V'tyai stood in front of the clutch with his legs spread a shoulder width apart and arms crossed over his chest, his glower stamped across his face. He threatened the Candidates, yes, but that didn't mean his a** wouldn't be on the line if they messed up; M'onk made it perfectly clear that should anything go awry that he'd hold V'tyai personally responsible. Being held accountable for a slew of prisoners and desperate guards did absolutely nothing to lighten his disposition or make him feel better about his life decisions.

Not much about being at a prison gave any sort of person a boost in confidence over a well lived life. Normal people typically didn't end up there. Now, huge trundling murderbeasts that acted the parts of mountains, those ended up Warden's and, apparently, on the Sands that day.

V'tyai blinked at the sudden appearance of Gus. Kaelyandra snickered nearby. Just seconds after he started to turn, Taavetti started his jaunty saunter towards the Warden of Murderers Row at the same rate V'tyai's eyebrows rose towards his hairline. For those unaware of V'tyai's range of expressions, it'd look as if he arched his eyebrows at an overly happy wherhandler. If versed in the diverse dictionary of his face, Vit all but dropped his jaw at Taavi. A jumble of questions ran through his head ranging from why to are you insane, people can see. All of it led to him feeling rather ridiculously pleased, a corner of his mouth kicking up for a second.

It quickly turned to a stormclouds scowl, his fingers curled over the meatroll. "You wherrie brained deadglow," he growled, leaning away from the closeness of Taavi. Stepping away didn't happen even as the line of his shoulders tightened. "The Sands aren't a place for lunch, Taavetti. Especially when I'm babysitting. Aren't some of your friends out there?" His head jerked towards the people loitering the sands. V'tyai didn't expect Taavi to go off and commit a crime again; he had no reason to and didn't strike him as someone to take to crime for the fun of it. Still, he had the unfortunate ability to be a complete a** to everyone. Even men with nice smiles and voices like his didn't make them immune.

Three eggs down and she tried to ignore the distraction that was coming from the Warden's vicinity. The Strawberry Wine Egg was calling to her even though it was obvious the two men were having some sort of conversation. Pulling her eyes away, she reached out to stroke the egg shell. It looked like it had gotten into a fight and possible won. And it seemed friendly enough. "Hello there! Trying to make yourself known? That is a not a bad thing, to be known and remembered. And with a shell like yours, surely you will be the talk for a while." Canoake almost felt like the egg just grinned and shrugged at her. "Like a little kid. Have fun then!"

The Cheerful Sneak-Thief Egg was next. On the outskirts of the clutch, Canoake wondered if wanted to be there or had landed there and now couldn't be moved. But either way, there it was and as Canoake touched it, she almost got the feeling that is was taking everything in. Including her. Unsure, she drew her hand back but then reached out to stroke the shell again. Yes. Definitely being "watched". "The more you watch, the more you learn. I would watch very carefully."

So that's what feet taste like, Leevi said to himself, as he managed to say exactly the wrong thing to precisely the wrong person. His smile faded by a few molars, but it made a very valiant effort to at least make it look like he didn't feel bad. The man's words were polite, but it was the sort of etiquette that had been honed to an edge made just for stabbing someone else. In particular, it stabbed Leevi right in the youth.

Oh, come on! That just... that was just unfair. Yeah, so he couldn't really grow facial hair. But that didn't mean he wasn't an adult! If his research played out, he was pretty sure he could reach master level soon. Why didn't they measure adulthood like that? These were the words that wanted to get out of his mouth but were ultimately swallowed, on the basis that throwing a fit would kind of disprove his whole 'I AM AN ADULT' point.

“Are you getting anything?” he asked Lin, now extremely curious about the very different experiences people were having. Maybe it was an age thing. The girl----prisoner, as marked by her bright red jumpsuit----couldn't have been very far into her teens.

~.~

Ooohh, Vit should have known better than to ask if Taavi was insane anyway. The answer was, always and forever, of course! Far more fun than being sane. Besides, Vit was the man accepting a meatroll from a crazy man so, really, who was crazier in that scenario?

“I'm multitasking. You can't get mad at me for doing my job, Vit,” he said pleasantly enough. To be technical about it, Gus was doing his job. Mostly, it involved looking as intimidating as possible, which was quite an easy task for a murderbeast of a wher. For the first time, Taavi's grin faded. Just a little bit. In the grand scheme of things, it was about as noticeable as a single drop of rain among a storm. But it was the first drop.

Well, yeah. Actually... he was uncomfortably and acutely aware that he knew some of the men and women wearing the lovely, lovely uniforms of prisoners. And he knew that they were aware of him. Funny thing about becoming a guard after being a prisoner: it didn't do a lot for your popularity among your old 'friends', who were only friends in the same sense that the man who politely refrained from shanking you today was your pal.

“Eh, duty calls, like I said,” he said, brushing off the comment. “Plus, you can't really expect me to pass up a chance to at least get a look at the eggs. I've never seen dragon eggs. Never thought I'd get a chance.”

Taavi wasn't the only one aware of the prisoners. So was Gus.

He wasn't much of a talker, least of all to people who weren't Taavi, but he made an exception for Vit. His mind brushed against the Bluerider's with the patient mind of a mountain that was simply waiting for an avalanche. And looking forward to it.

:]

V'tyai accepted the meatroll for the simple reason that denying Taavi meant risk pissing off Gus and making Taavetti frown. Neither of the outcomes appealed to him, so he took it, and tucked it against his thigh in discreet a manner as possible. Even annoying and bright in the way of the midday sun, Taavetti had a point in that he hadn't yet had anything to eat that day. It'd been full of stress and worry. The stress didn't mean that the bluerider didn't catch the way Taavi's smile flagged; just because he didn't react to the things Taavi said and did all the time didn't mean he couldn't see them.

He moved that slight distance closer to the wherhandler and nudged his elbow against the other mans as well. Eyebrows that lowered over the course of Taavetti's blathering flicked back up in what could be considered concern or surprise but neverless contained the silent question of is this something less stupid then what you're blathering about usually?

"Brakiheth already gave you permission to be on the Sands. If Gus promises not to poke at the eggs with his mind, I don't see why you can't touch them." The wher in question earned himself a side glance, the lines around V'tyai's lips tightening with that :] in his brain. "...he wants to kill someone right now, doesn't he?"

When Lin reached out to touch the Preening Princess egg, at first, there was nothing. There was a flutter in her mind and Lin could feel her muscles tense, as though in doing so she could better prepare herself for the rejection. Oh no! It wouldn't like her after all! She'd been wrong to try and guess what it wanted. She must've scared it away.

But when the egg finally did respond, with all the warmth and kindness of a young mother, it was enough to draw a rare and genuine smile from the girl's lips. She laughed quietly to herself, letting out all the nervous tension. She lifted her hands and turned a proud grin towards Leevi. She was surprised to be spoken to, especially by someone who was not a prisoner, but she felt a strange kind of connection to him, since they'd both gotten a similar response from the egg. "Yep! Definitely a friendly one." she confirmed with a nod.

Her confidence rising, Lin turned away from Leevi and the Preening Princess egg and lazily brushed a finger over the tops of one or two others as she made her way back to the front of the clutch. She was hit with condescension (Tiny Professor), anxiety (Golden Melody), and a.. hug?!

Finally she made it back to the brown speckled egg that had first caught her interest, and the big blue one sitting next to it. Stopping just in front of it, Lin flopped to her knees. "You didn’t think I’d forgotten about you, did ya?" she whispered to the pretty blue-on-blue shell. "I just got distracted, is all. Don’t think anything of it." She reached out a hand and carefully touched the crown of the Cheerful Sneak-Thief Egg.

There was absolutely no reason to take comfort in V'tyai's silent affirmation and presence. Taking comfort in the presence of the man was like... like... well, words failed, mostly because there wasn't a metaphor in the world that could fully encapsulate how stupid it was. V'tyai was not, by nature, a comforting man from what Taavi had seen. The Bluerider had a notoriously low bullshit-o-meter, carefully honed by working with killers each and every day who would lie for fun.

So why did Taavi feel a brush of warmth somewhere in the vicinity of his heart when Vit moved closer?

“Nah, I know my place. I'm not sure what would happen if I touched an egg while my mind is linked with Gus'. Shards, I don't know what Gus would do...” he glanced at the brown wher who was waiting quietly, looking about as harmless as a large murderbeast could. Really, he looked almost peaceful. If you couldn't see his mind.

“He always wants to kill something,” Taavi said very softly, not taking his eyes away from the wher. Still, he had control over Gus, right?

Right?

“Anyway, how is it going here?”

Jaykkial twitched as the occupant within the Little Hunter egg began to shout at her. Her face twisted into a toothy grin as her eyes narrowed at the tiny shell. I'll look at you if I sharding well want. She thought back. This little guy wanted to go? He could Bring. It. Jaykkial had seen maulings and worse in her turns on the sands, even participated in some. She wasn't afraid of a little s**t like this one. With a smirk and a hint of contrariness, Jaykkial patted the little hunter and moved on without a backwards glance.

Her hands grazed a few of the other eggs as she worked her way through the clutch. Various responses both alluring and repulsive, Jaykkial's feisty mood left over from the Little Hunter egg might have flavored her responses to some. She'd never been one to suck up to each egg though. Maybe that had been what prevented her from Impressing all these turns, but if a hatchling didn't want HER then she didn't want it.

Nearing the back of the clutch she spotted another ridiculously small egg that had previously been hidden. Bending down once again, she put her hands on the shell of the GROUP HUG Egg. Little Hunter had obviously not been a dud but this was even smaller. Could it really fit a dragon?

...............................................................................

Luka wasn't sure why she was here. She was too old to Impress. Far too old in her opinion. Here she was though, with a handful of other prisoners in their red jumpsuits, mingling with the eggs of a deformed dragon queen. Even if she'd been young enough to Impress, who would want to Impress from this clutch? With a Blue for a father no less. Who knows what would come from these eggs.

They were pretty though. Luka wouldn't deny that, and the feeling of another's mind brushing hers was an altogether new experience for the young woman who'd never so much as had a firelizard. Luka did as she'd been told, and followed the other candidate's examples, touching each shell as she passed. Never had she thought that dragons could have such varied personalities.

Reaching the back of the clutch, Luka stopped by the largest egg and laid a hand carefully on it's plain shell, wary after some of the others. The Marvelous Dancer egg wasn't as pretty, but it had it's charms.

(Insert hatchling thought here)
She hummed thinking about the egg's reaction until Taavi's unmistakable voice sang out across the sands. Saain gave a casual nod towards Gus, acknowledging the brown wher presence and idly watch Taavi saunter up to... really luv, V'tyai? Well, that was a bit unexpected, there had been rumors, most of them cruel but Saain had not given them much thought. What Taavi did or who was Taavi business and had no part in Taavi being released or getting his charming murder beast.

She walked slowly, carefully heading towards Taavi's direction. Just in case he needed a save from the secondary warden. V'tyai was a harsh man. Saain had not see much of the secondary warden, but there were rumors, the gen population was full of them. She found a way to keep him in sight and shorter distance, just incase Taavi need a opening to retreat. She looked over the eggs and reached out to touch the Maritime Monochrome Egg.

Had it been any other offer, he'd probably bristle with the refusal. Seeing as how it involved touching a psychic infant with a man already attached to a murder beast and he only put it out there as a way to make Taavetti feel better, the wherhandler saying 'no' sat just fine. If anyone tried to say he did anything just to make the loud and infuriating man feel less horrible, Vit would deny it. All of it. And it was none of their damn business anyway.

"That's true. Wouldn't want him trying to eat the eggs. Brakiheth would be displeased and I'd probably be shanked." No teasing lurked in V'tyai's tone. He knew if anything went wrong, if someone messed up too badly, he'd be the one with the wound on their head, not just the Candidate. The bluerider took a bite of the meatroll. Luckily for him that Taavi had his eyes on the brown lump of wher; it meant he didn't see the way V'tyai's eyes slid closed for that moment, or how a muscle in his neck twitched when the flavor of perfectly cooked meat burst over his tongue and the pastry outside crumbled. The secondary lickd his lips and opened his eyes just in time to see one of the women from GenPop looking over at him and Taavetti.

Dark eyes went near black, narrowed into slits. Square features and full lips settled into a look of intense displeasure, especially once the woman ghosted even closer and kept the both of them in her sights. He couldn't step closer to Taavi without being very close and quite personal but the very fact she looked them up disturbed him. V'tyai didn't like it when criminals watched him. He didn't like it when they watched the wherhandler. That was all the twist under his throat was - protectiveness for a friend. Nothing more.

"It's fine," he said after a short moment, the dark glare to Saain shifting into something a little less deadly for Taavi. The bluerider kept his voice too low to be heard by anyone but the man at his side, shoulders tensed. "No one has messed anything up yet, Brakiheth and Kaelyandra seem to be in good spirits. M'onk is pissed but when is he not?" V'tyai scowled, eyes narrow once again. "Did you make the meatroll?"
