They were late for the party, but at least they'd made it. Mkaa was having trouble hiding his annoyance at his younger sister, who had decided to take her sweet time doing every little thing possible before agreeing to follow him to the meeting. They arrived in time to witness Hanja's exposition about other prides. He chose a spot a comfortable ways from Makoto and gestured for Thaba to rest beside him as he listened.
"What's going on?" Thaba whispered to him, confused. Both cheetahs had been born into the pride, and both were a touch too young to have remembered the plague, or to understand much about the outside world. Mkaa was sharp and learned quickly, but Thaba had trouble wrapping her thoughts around the fact that other groups even existed outside their pride. She huddled beside her brother, careful not to put pressure on his lame leg.
"Shush, I think we'll find out," Mkaa replied quietly, with an affectionate lick on his sister's ear. He had already figured out the gist of what was going on, and was curious to hear more from Hanja. Mkaa didn't really know most of the pride well, since he kept to himself, or with his sister. But he always recognized a face.
He started thinking over rank ideas once Makoto addressed the group as a whole. He had an idea...
And was promptly interrupted by Thaba.
"Rounded?" She asked loudly, tilting her head quizzically. "If you want a more rounded pride, we should eat more!" Thaba exclaimed with a huge grin on her face.
The heat Mkaa felt under his fur had nothing to do with the drought. "Err, I think what Thaba means is that she likes the ideas she's uh... heard so far," he said, in a voice that wasn't quite as strong as he had hoped it would be. "Anyways, I have a suggestion... why not a rank solely for Trainers? Creatures who understand the body and how to get it to preform well. To help the racers reach their physical peak." He finished with a nervous swallow, hoping that everyone would focus on that, instead of his naive sibling.
"Oh! Kind of how Mkaa is always telling me what to eat and when to run and where to sleep and all that stuff!" Thaba added enthusiastically. She was far from bright, but she loved her brother and would support almost anything that he said. Unless it meant she had to do something she didn't want to do, of course. "So I don't do something silly like hurt myself." Thaba laughed. As if she would ever do that.
Mkaa couldn't help but feel pride for watching over his sister, after that.

Her ears flattened to her head as Hanja put words to her fears (and then some). The talk abut all the nasty groups out there scared her, and the conflict among the two guards made her feel uncomfortable. How could those two protect them if they were busy fighting?
"We're not slaves," she said, horrified over the King's choice of words. So horrified, in fact, that she said it loud and clear. The sound of her own voice seemed to startle her and her tail hugged her toes even tighter.
After all the talk about thieves and slaves and violent prides she was relieved that someone knew of a more peaceful place.
"I think that pride sounds like a much nicer one," she said in a low voice. She listened with interest to the two young cheetahs. Would a trainer help her be a better runner? She'd try anything to make sure she was as good as she could possibly be. Her ears came forward and it was obvious that she had liked the idea, even if she didn't say anything.

"No, you are NOT slaves, Lucky Break. NONE of you are slaves." He let out a sigh. "I can see where others from outside the pride might see it like that, which is part of why I'm looking for your feedback on ranks YOU would want, to even the playing field for cats, dogs, and hyenas alike. Yes, you race for your food... But you still get fed wether you win or lose." He looked around at the gathered non-lions. "In fact, some of you eat better than some of the lions in the pride, because we cherish every single one of you greatly. That's why any lion who raises his or her paw in anger at a cheetah that loses is removed from the pride, because I will have none of that in my pride. A pride that succeeds is a pride where everybody gets along, regardless of gender, age, or race."Sumu sat down, nodding her head. Yes, that sounded about right... Of course, being a hyena, she wasn't nearly as picky about what she ate. She could be left the bones with a few bits of meat on them for all she cared. Her lip curled back at the mention of cheetah abuse. Biting the last lion on the rump who'd done that had felt so rewarding... If there was anything about Sumu that could be told by just watching her, she adored the cheetahs as if they were her children. "So... You mentioned other ranks... Any good ideas come up yet?"OOC: So far the only ranks to come up as ideas for species-neutral are: Bookie My next post will be the last one... This RP has gone on a bit long xd ;

Lucky Break looked a more relaxed, but she still appeared to be a bit tense. However, this was natural for the high strung cheetah. The nervous energy never quite left her, and for the most part it helped her perform. She knew she wouldn't be denied food, not even if she did poorly. Even when she was old and useless she'd be taken care of. But she dreaded that day, because it was important to her to have a sense of being useful.
"I like the idea of someone dedicated to training racers," she said, "To help us perform better."
Perhaps Mkaa's rank idea would help her stay fit longer. Run faster. Win more races.

Makoto smiled. "A trainer is a great idea! That sounds a good rank for retired cheetahs, wether they've won the Grand Races or not!" An older, wiser cheetah could coach the younger generations on form and technique, helping them to win races. Which... His ears pricked. "Actually, Trainer sounds like a good rank overall for ALL species in the pride." He looked around at all gathered. "Retiring huntresses and guards can train the adolescent lions of the pride, while retiring hyenas and wild dogs can train young hyenas and dogs how to effectively guard the cheetahs, and retired leopards and hybrids can likewise train cubs on how to carry weight without injuring themselves." It was a good, species-neutral title! "Any last thoughts?"Sumu tilted her head. Trainer... Sounded good to her. "Yeah, we need more everything in this pride now!" Between the last plague and the drought, the pride wasn't exactly doing great. They needed more everythings so they could protect and feed the cheetahs, and not have to chuck any to the crocodiles.The black and white lion frowned. "Yes, we're... Working on that one..." He cleared his throat, looking back to the main body of animals. "Right, so... The new, species-neutral ranks that ANY race may hold are bookie and trainer! When we get more pride members, I will begin to interview any interested in the ranks to see who would best fit in the role! Have a good day, everybody, there will be no races today." He looked at the sky. "Too hot to risk it." As he climbed down, Makoto wondered... Would things ever get better?OOC: Thank you to everybody who participated in this RP! heart I'm sorry it took nearly a year to finish, it just wasn't as active as I thought it would be ^^; My next two posts will be the raffle for the hyena on the front page! heart One for the list of participants, and one to roll from it!

Congratulations! heart You have won this girl! heart At present, her name is Silvamord, but you MAY change it! Her original RP contest entry is here! heart The pups WERE recovered, but things in the pack went south and it disbanded(OOCly, it became too inactive). The running thought now is that she fell ill and ended up losing her memory of her former mate and pups, but you MAY contact Lorne_Sionn and/or Tanakako if you would like any more information, or maybe to try and lure the other two hyenas in from the roguelands wink If you do not respond in a week, though, I'll reroll from everybody else sad I'll make another ORP soon-ish to address the return of the rains, even if it IS a bit late OOCly wink
