Shane waited on the side, keeping his horse steady as Blood Runner went off to investigate. When he returned, he looked towards Marcus.

"A fox. Really."

People these days were really skittish as all hell weren't they? The man let out a sigh, but then he soon realized one thing.

"The deer told you it was a fox?" he asked while eyeing the man. He didn't hear anything. There was nothing body language a deer could do to suggest 'fox' or anything like that. So...

"..."

His day seemed to be getting weirder.

"Really." The horse stomped around as Marcus tried to get it to move with the caravan. "You tell a superstitious man about things on the road this is what we get. Normally just paranoia about bandits, now we have imaginary wolves that are foxes." Blood Runner was sending quite a few feeling of annoyance, and the desire for someplace warm. Warm with women who would fawn over him and feed him fresh vegetables. A think Marcus half agreed with.

"Blood Runner is a guardian, better or worse. He can speak just not.. in a conventional way." rubbing his hands together the cold was sinking in having stayed in one place. Moving helped make the cold seem less, on a horse or not.
"I'd explain it if I knew how it worked, sadly, I don't."

Shane sighed heavily at that, placing a hand at his brow for a moment or so. These people. Slowly, he shook his head before looking at the Chosen, raising an eyebrow at the explanation. Or... sort of lack of one.

"I see," he said simply.

It might be one of those things that you could only understand if you had it yourself. For now, he just decided to not question it. What he would like though, was for them to get moving again.

"Oi, are we going to sit here all day?" he called out towards the front.
PostPosted: Mon Jan 28, 2013 12:27 pm

There was more yelling from the front followed by a 'we are moving'. But... they really weren't. When they did start moving however, there was one smug looking Blood Runner trotting his way back to Marcus's side.

"......" The buck tilted his head back, expecting a bit of praise. ".......You didn't even do anything." Ear went back as the head came forward with a sharp look the the chosen. Sighing, Marcus went back to looking up a head."I can't wait to reach the first tavern and get myself a drink." Looking over he asked. "What about you?"

Looking towards the buck, Shane furrowed his brow, wondering just what it was he had said. The most he could tell was that Blood Runner was looking kind of proud of himself or something like that.. which may have been followed up by annoyance. He just sort of shrugged this off. However the communication went exactly, he didn't really have a way to pick up fully on what was being said apart from the way the deer acted.

"I'm not too much of a drinker, but I certainly wouldn't mind getting somewhere warm in the very least. I almost forgot how cold it got in Sunderland," he murmured. He could see the frost in his breath while he was out here.

Marcus was half busy glaring at Blood Runner who was more or less sending wave of 'This is stupid. Lets leave. They don't need us anyway'. Marcus might have agreed, but it would end poorly. No pay meant no warm bed and meal. No wine, and most certainly no women. Not unless he could woo one with the fact he was a chosen.

A thing that never went over that well.

"Its rather nice once you get past the fact it might kill you." He nodded out at the woods. "Kind of like the paintings they sell in the south. The wild frozen north. Behind a window its nice enough to look at."

"Yes, I suppose so. It's not bad to look at, but being stuck out in it is considerably less pleasant," he agreed. A little bit of a chill was fine with him, but the current temperatures were definitely too frigid for his preferences. Perhaps it was due to the fact that he had to be out in the streets at times when he was younger.

"But, I don't think we have much longer on this job anyway... as long as we don't have any more scares or anything like that," Shane said rather flatly.

A low hum from the back of his throat, Marcus reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small hard candy. "If the driver gets scared my a field mouse or a hare I wouldn't surprised. Annoyed, but not surprised." The candy popped into his mouth, he motioned to Blood Runner to go back to the front.

"You don't seem the type to spend your days protecting traders. This just seasonal work for you?"

"I do whatever needs to be done, whether it's being a bodyguard or a contract killer," Shane said in a matter of fact tone, "Times like these where people feel the need to have a little more protection or times where people feel like they have more enemies than usual or whatever help keep me fed."

It didn't really matter what the job was. He did it without asking questions most of the times. There were few limits for him.

"This something you usually take up?"
PostPosted: Thu Jan 31, 2013 10:29 am

Well, that was certainly not the answer Marcus had been expecting. "Contract killing huh?" He hadn't met anyone that was so open about it. Then again meet contract killers wasn't a top priority.

"I see. Well you certainly have a good market these days I expect. Paranoia rampant and all. And... yes and no." He gave an ambivalent shrug. "I take what comes my way more often than not. These days everyone wants a guard. Or a Guardian." He could feel Blood Runner rolling his eyes in the distance.

"Even if the biggest threat is a fox people want Blodd Runner around. Think he'll drive off the wolves. He's more likely to drive someone nuts." A pause. "You ever been to the wardwood?"

Shane just shrugged at that. He didn't particularly care too much who knew, especially when the company was pretty much other blades for hire.

"That's for sure," he murmured. He glanced over towards Blood Runner for a moment or so. Thankfully he hadn't run into anyone that refused to hire him because he didn't happen to have a Guardian. The day that came, things would be a little more troublesome on his part. Hopefully that wouldn't be something that would happen all too much.

Snapping from his thoughts, he soon looked towards the woods.

"No. I've been around the edges of it but I've never had a reason to actually go into the woods themselves. Why do you ask?"

A clatter of hooves and Marcus tugged on the reins of his horse. The city was now coming into view, and the entire caravan seemed to be ready for it. Blood Runner even had his tail give a flicker with excitement combined with a tiny hop. "The woods aren't that bad, not sure why people might fear it..... before the rumors I mean." Woods were woods. You hunted in them and whatnot. Woods were just the woods.

Even if they gave out stone totems that summoned odd deer.

"If you hunt one thing you might hunt more the wild. That said we're almost into town, thank the gods.' He could feel Blood Runner getting a bit anxious even. "The sooner we make it in, the sooner we're out of this damn cold."

"I wouldn't imagine there be anything that much more dangerous in the woods than what could be found in the city streets sometimes," Shane shrugged. It was likely just a forest that might be a little gloomy, but he didn't think there was much reason to be afraid of the place.

Seeing the town ahead, he let out a frosted breath.

"That's for sure," he muttered, "And the sooner we get the rest of our pay."

That was important too.

It was sadly true, the city was just about as dangerous with criminals and thugs as the woods were with bandits and wild beasts. "Rather spend a night in the forest than in some parts of town." He muttered.
As they approached the city limits a few of the men were already asking about pay, earning a bit of yelling up front.

"Looks like we're not the only ones looking to leave." Blood Runner snorted stopping alongside the front to wait for Marcus. Get his pay and go. "And looks like we'll get to as well."

"Excellent."

Shane had grown tired of this particular job. These escort jobs rarely had any trouble occur, and in this frigid weather, they were a little less than tolerable. But a job was a job. And he still got paid in the end, so there was that at least.

Pushing his horse forth, he went to collect his pay once they were within the walls of the city. Before going on his way, he shot a glance to Marcus and his deer and just waved silently. Maybe they would work with one another again in the future. Or maybe not.
