It did something strange to Alethes, to see him hand each of the children a prize for their efforts. She was struck by the understanding that he was a good man, and she didn't know what to do with it. So she did nothing other than stand, knees weakening a little when he stooped to look the smallest of the boys in the eyes.

She recalled their kiss, and the way that she'd enjoyed it, without shame for the first time.

The children were disappointed when Gehenna announced that they had to leave, and then hollered with boisterous approval to know that there would be presents next time. Alethes tried to squash the little bit of joy that quivered in her own stomach, at this idea. And failed.

She wanted to see him again.

"And they'll be happy to do it, too," Alethes smirked, falling into step alongside Gehenna, "Vulcan is a dangerous place."

It was easy to tell, by the warmth in Alethes' voice, that she wouldn't have had it any other way. She glanced sideways at him, corners of her pretty mouth twitching, "especially for soft-hearted men."
