"I will still look better than you!" Huo hollered back up at her. If he couldn't smack her until she sneezed Firekin-colored snot, he could at least get out his anger in insults.
Huo tried shaking the rock again. Slam. Slam. It still didn't budge. He hopped, and jumped, and lost himself in howling at her in anger.
"Maipe. Huo."
The shadow fell over the little white cub, but he was too busy being angry to notice his mother for quite a few moments.
"Huo."
Then he was scruffed, and everything quickly stopped. The anger drained from him like spilled water onto the sands. Huo's red eyes looked around in wonder as dread began to fill him. Oh no, he was in trouble.
And. . . his eyes were level with Maipe. Then, he remembered their squabble. "Mom! Maipe's trying to kill me!"

Maipe had all day and all night and the rest of her whole life to smack the stupid outta him! She lunged over the side as far as she could without risking a fall; her paw waved, claws out, the entire time.
"Maipe."
Uh oh big time.
Maipe recoiled and put those claws back. She laid down, pinned her eyes, and tried to think of a way to make this Huo's fault. Just how much had her mother seen? Was it worth the risk to lie and argue her brother was the dishonest one when he contradicted her?
"I didn't do nothin'," Maipe said adamantly. "I was just playin'. --He scratched my nose!"

"Liar!" Huo began, shouting it from the top of his lungs. He began to repeat it, several times. His voice was violently cut off as his body began to move, quickly, through the air. Huo's paws felt sand again, and a heavy, black paw pushed him down once.
"You will both stop making excuses."
Then, Seide's large mouth descended on Maipe's scruff as well. It was a gentle grip, despite the even, cool tone that Seide had produced from it. Maipe was placed a small distance from her brother and hushed with a paw as well.
"If you cannot play together nicely, you will both come inside and voice your complaints at the corners. If you would like to continue playing outside, you will apologize to one another."
The mother surveyed her cubs and took her own seat. The patience that both her cubs lacked, Seide had in abundance. If they were stubborn, they would be sitting there in silence until nightfall. Then, they would have to come inside anyway.

Maipe squirmed in her mother's grasp, both in the air and on the ground.
Apologize? Oooh no. She was notnotnot apologizing. No way, no how. It wasn't her fault Fat Butt had a big, fat butt, now was it? They could just stay here until bedtime if that's what it took.
Nope. Not happenin'.
Maipe, instead of looking at her brother, visually searched the vicinity (or 'isually searched the 'icinity as Fat Butt would say) for signs of help. Her grandfather would be the best bet, but if her dad and her uncle got a good enough look at the Sad Eyes, there was hope for them.
She deserved some assistance over here!

Moto'Seide gave them both a few moments. Huo's tongue moved around the inside of this mouth, but he said nothing. Maipe, too, seemed to be completely silent.
"Let me see your nose, Maipe." As long as the cubs were insisting on being difficult, she would use her time effectively.
It seemed the trait that Maipe and Huo had gotten from their mother was not in fact patience, but stubbornness. It was going to be a contest. Firekin of all ages were perhaps a little too competitive.
Huo, while his mom was occupied examining Maipe's nose, slowly stuck out his tongue.

Maipe could get on board with that request. She tilted her head obediently so her mother could examine the terrible, awful damage her brother had done. The fact he was not being held responsible was a grave injustice!
She glared venomously at him and his stupid tongue.
"It really hurts," Maipe complained -- but gruffly, so she wasn't whining like a baby. "Firekin aren't supposed to duel with their claws out. Right, Mom?"

One ear on Huo in case he decided to try and escape, Moto'Seide examined the cut with an attention to detail that only a mother could possess.
"Hm," she told Maipe. Then, with the same efficient effectiveness that a Legate should possess, she carefully washed the wound with her tongue. It was a very minor cut, but it was good to keep it clean all the same.
"Were you dueling?" The question was directed at them both, and she flicked her eyes between them, clearly expecting an honest, and polite answer.
Huo quickly jerked his tongue in when his mother looked his way. His eyes, however, were focused on his sister. The cub's expression said, Don't you dare say we were, you liar!

Most parents hoped that their cubs would grow up to be honest, brave, and intelligent. Maipe had two of those three qualities and would hopefully learn the first in time. In the wake of that sibling vs sibling melee, she was more concerned with her welfare than the truth.
"I was," she said. Smart move, speaking on only her behalf. Manipulative, but smart -- depending on how much Mom had seen. "I'm only try to train so I'll make a good soldier one day, but Huo is just a bully who scratches lions."

It took great control for Moto'Seide to hold the smirk from her features. Thankfully, the Legate was nothing if not adept at keeping her emotions cool, and unrecognizable. Her daughter was trouble, and she had a brain on her shoulders to go with that trouble. It was a blessing, really, that she had been born to Seide and not any other mother in the Firekin.
"Did you hit your sister, Huo?"
The white cub began to squirm and writhe. He tried to avoid his mother's eyes, like he often did when the answer was yes but he did not wish to admit it. His eyes flicked towards his sister, his face turned sour, and then he glanced at his mother again. ". . . yes."
"Then, you will come inside with me and think about why that is wrong. When you know, you may come tell me, and then you will apologize to your sister."
That settled, she turned her eyes to her daughter.
"You will be sitting to think in your own corner as well, Maipe." Her dark purple eyes lingered on her daughter, as if inviting her to contest the punishment.

Maipe had her own smirk to keep under control. Nah, nah! Huo was getting in trouble! If she kept up the soldier talk, maybe she'd be Mom's favorite. She was already Grandpa's (duh). One down, one mother, grandmother, father, and uncle to go.
"When you know, you may come tell me, and then you will apologize to your sister."
Yeeeesssss.
"You will be sitting to think in your own corner as well, Maipe."
Waitwhat.
Maipe groaned miserably, but didn't say anything. She'd just use that time to savor her victory or something. "Fiiiiine."
(Actually, she'd end up complaining about being bored within five minutes, but psh. Details.)
