“Doctors are…” He hesitated making an amusing face as he slowly immersed his aching feet into the hot water and all its additions. “Useful in wars though, they serve a purpose, I’m afraid I’d be cannon fodder, wolf food, unless perhaps I am perhaps bad tasting.” He considered the thought that perhaps he might not be palatable, and it seemed at least a vaguely hopeful thought.

He pulled the small totem out of his pocket and slowly uncurled his fingers from around it; they still formed a tight cage. A guarding wall of slender digits that barred it from being idly snatched from his hand.

He puzzled over the man’s words as well. “Did you?” He asked bluntly, more so than he once would have to be sure. “Did you go looking to fight in a war?”

Marco gave a small nod. "Useful if we can stomach it, not to mention was have to be able to take up arms as well if the need arises." Going and getting a small tool kit and a few other items, he set them nearby for then it was time to drain and wrap.

"If you don't want to be cannon fodder, food, or... a stain." There was a small shudder. "You can start by not running around in the wardwood." There was a light joke in his voice as he let the feet soak.

"And no. I never went looking to fight in a war. But I've seen what happens when men take things too far. Just in bars or over crops... Nasty business. What a single man can do to another is bad enough. I'd not like the idea of what they could do in a large scale."

“Surely you must have some stomach for it to be a Doctor at all?” He asked earnestly. He did drop his gaze though, thinking on what the man said, the dangers of man against man. He knew well enough what angry boys in a sort of ‘power’ could do, no…not even a sort of power in its own way it was sanctioned.

“I can honestly say I had no intent of entering the wood when I came here, I can not undo the fact I did…but then…I am not sure I would either.”

Picking up the needle, Marco waved it around while he talked a bit. "Oh well yes. I can sew a man's bleeding gaping wound up, but its a bit different when one is accidental and another is purely intentional." He gave a shrug. "A one on one isn't so bad, but a slaughter is a slaughter" Gently grabbing the man's foot he gave a small warning before he began.

"This might sting a bit, but don't try to truggle. Stabbing your foot with a needle is hardly in my priorities." A small p***k, and the blisters were being drained. "You ever intend to go back? Or just going to go home and pretend you never di?"

He tried to be ‘unaffected’ by puncturing the blisters, but lord the idea just turned his stomach regardless. He stared into a corner like it were the most amazing corner in the world before he could answer.

“I don’t know… besides… I’m not sure I could pretend it never happened. I… Spoke to a girl in the market about them…” he hesitated and then carefully fished into his pocket and pulled out the small totem, handsome black with blue swirls; such a small but important bit of stone.

“I mean…not with this, assuming that… where I found it makes it, well, real.”

It was okay for Zac, corners were pretty amazing. Especially right angles. 90 degrees and all. Marco didn't seem bothered by the fact the man was looking away. Not everyone could handle needles or sharp objects piercing skin after all.

As Zac brought out the totem, Marco gave a small nod of his head, piercing the last blister and letting the liquid drain. The sight of the the stone certainly got Somnium's attention, the buck walking over to peer at it, curious. "Looks a bit like my own. Plus, you said you had no intention so likely, it is what you think it is." Somnium gave a happy little hoof stomp, giving Zac a small nudge to his arm.

"Looks like you'll be fighting wolves with the rest of us."

“Cannon fodder at least.” He said with a small nervous laugh. “Unless Wolves are less than fond of blistered feet. Perhaps then I’d bring us a great victory.”

He blinked at the deer that nudged his arm, reaching a cautious hand for it to sniff, perhaps a bit more like something you’d do for a dog than a deer but he was still registering it as ‘wild animal’ rather than companion. “Your…companion is quite…his markings are.” He was at a loss for words to be honest. Handsome buck indeed, the spots almost dizzying never mind the red sweeps and leaves that caught and drew the eye.

“Do it, have to go back to the woods at all?” he asked cautiously. “For…mine?” He sounded less than enthused about the idea, small wonder with recently blistered feet.
“Will he be alright in the city do you think?”

A snort from Somnium before the buck rubbed his nose into the offered hand. "Doubt you'll become fodder. They may not look it, but the guardians are made of sturdy stuff. Somnium can carry me if need be, and he can do well on his own, out running many dogs that think it fun to n** at his heels." The guardian scratched the floor with his hoof, quite proud of such things.

"The markings looked like the ones on his rock." A snort from Somnium. "Pardon, totem. Nothing like a normal deer. And no." Moving the basin out of the way, a clothe was brought up drying the drained and cleaned feet off. "You don't have to go back unless your guardian makes you. Which, in my case, he hasn't. And you'll be find. Thankfully, the old legends give us a bit of help. Combined with the rumors of wolves, most people will be more than happy to accommodate. Take the days as they come, you'll be less stress for it."

“Strong enough to carry…” he marveled eying the deer who nuzzled his palm in so friendly a manner, He squeezed his own totem to his chest, gentle but firm. Already deeply attached to it, though it was nothing but stone as of yet.

“I’ll have to look for books, I want to try and learn as much as I can. There must be something, everything I know so far is wonderful, its come from other people…who have companions. But if there was more I could learn about the wolves’… old texts…” he rambled slightly and then exhaled some of the tension in a soft sigh.

“Thank you.” He said at last. “I ah… how much do I owe you for…” he waved at his feet.

He didn't mention that too much riding would result in blisters on a place not comfortable in the least. "Eventually. Provided your Guardian has the right temperament for it. Somnium only lets me on a few occasions. He's willing to carry my supplies though." The buck gave a a small nod. Bags for medical supplies weighed less than a fully grown man after all.

The man's enthusiasm for learning did give the doctor paused while wrapping Zac's feet. Brow raised he smirked a bit. "A good start. Look in the stories from the common people. and trust them just as much as the books. And you owe me-" he counted it up before giving a small nod, "-whatever you can pay. You no doubt have a ways to go before you're home. Aside, consider it a favor from one chosen to another." If he paid a bit, no skin off his back, but why not. A new chosen wasn't the worst person to treat after all.

He paid the man as much as he could and still afford to make his way home again. It probably wasn’t as bad as he fancied the payment was, but had he not stayed so long already he might have been able to afford better. He knew that and felt guilty all the same.

“If its anything like riding horses, it won’t be so terrible.” He hazarded. “But… that’s really up to…my companion.” He still found himself waiting to wake up and realize that this was just a strange, complicated, and detailed dream.

I um… I will send a letter and tell you what I found if you’d like. If I find anything interesting I mean.”

Marco considered it. Somnium was somewhat like a horse- The buck gave a snort as he caught wind of such thoughts. No, the guardian was nothing like a horse aside from the fact you could ride on them. "Its somewhat like a horse, but more bounce like? Im not sure a good way to explain. Deer have a different run than a horse, makes for an interesting ride when one is rushing across town."

Coins counted Marco set them aside. He was being paid, which was good. "A fair price. Now, once you get home, be sure to unwrap your bandages and let them air out to heal. They'll be fine from infection provided you don't go pulling at your skin. As for finding anything interesting?" Wiping off his hands Marco smiled a bit. "That would be nice. I tend to travel, so just send them to my residence out near Palisade."

Somnium gave a small nod as well. Stories were more fascinating to him than his chosen really.
