"You would hardly be the first," she said, for it was certainly true. More than one dazed chosen had cast their shadow over her doorstep. She was used to their confusion and seemingly undeniable need to speak. Oftentimes, she felt rather like a bartender must feel - a confidant made somehow safe by her relative anonymity. Of course, Alice did not often receive any significant compensation for lending her ear and home, and she was considerably less...considerate, she supposed. Less obviously sympathetic.
"Doubtless you will not be the last to feel the call." Not with the way events were shaping up. The darkness was stirring in the Wood. She could feel it. The wolves were already knocking at the door.
"It makes even the strongest of men dance like a puppet on strings. You need hardly feel embarrassed that it sent you traipsing away from home."

Her eyes go wide as Alice speaks upon it, for though she had had someone explain the myths to her, and sat down a scholar and begged him to explain a recent selection of essays on Guardians and Choosing, Alice is the first person she really trusts as an authority on the subject. There's something just so elegant about the other woman, even in what are to Marie such mean surroundings. "Is it always like that, then? There were dreams -- and then I thought of it during the day, and could not stop thinking of it, and became desperate towards the end. I .. I thought it was just the stories everyone was telling."
Then a pause, as she clutches the mug more tightly, until her knuckles go white with the grip.
" .. are they true, Miss Driscoll? The stories. The wolves. Are they really, truly, honestly true?" Her voice has lowered to a whisper, as if to speak of the wolves could somehow bring them here.

"From every Chosen I have spoken to, the longer they deny the call, the stronger it gets," she confirmed. "I see no reason to doubt that it is the same for any other, past or yet to come."
When Marie asked her fearful question, looking for all the world like a little girl begging to be told the monsters under the bead are not real, Alice sighed quietly and seemed suddenly weary. Were the stories true? Would that they were not. She would have preferred a quiet life as a simple hedge witch. It would have been so much easier if she had not been called upon to fulfill the ultimate purpose of her line. Unfortunately, life seldom works out how one wishes. It was her ill fate to be the one guarding the Wood when the darkness finally woke.
"It was not long ago at all when I found a young man on my doorstep. The wolves chased him out of the forest. He was lucky to escape with his life." She met the younger woman's eyes. "Why do you think the Guardians have been mustering their chosen?"
Leaving Marie with that rather ominous thought to consider, the woman removed a pot of boiling stew from the fire and went about gathering other bits of food from various parts of the kitchen.

Marie does not like this news, and holds it shivering to her breast -- it is a long moment before she speaks again, and several sips of her drink later. When finally she works up the courage, her voice remains small and frightened, just as much like a child's as before. "But why -- why is one Chosen? I thought they .. I thought it must surely be men, or those who would be strong. I cannot even frighten your cat .." She will trail off, to look about for the grimalkin, suddenly concerned that he might be creeping up behind her. But what well and truly terrifies her is the wolves, the wolves .. she does not want to be drawn into a conflict, into any conflict. Like Alice, she wanted nothing more than a quiet life; to get married to someone wealthy, then spend the rest of her life flirting, sleeping around, and spending her husband's money. She does lick her lips, and blush, as if aware she is placing on Alice's shoulders a heavier burden than one should give a stranger. " .. I am sorry, to ask all this of you, as if you must have all the answers. You seem so much wiser, and I have been so afraid to ask anyone else."

Having disappeared from the mantle, Hecate was nowhere to be seen. Of course, that did not mean that she was not keeping an eye on her prey. Rather, the grimalkin seemed to be biding her time, perhaps intent on instilling a sense of paranoia in the stray.
Allison shrugged, ignoring Marie's apology. "Who can say?" She was certainly no Chosen, to commune with a Guardian and know their secrets. However, she had met more of them than most normal folk realized were about, and her bloodline was long and very aware of the existence of hedge witch and Chosen alike. So, perhaps she was wiser than most in these things.
"You would do well to ask your Guardian, should it awaken," she suggested. "But I think it is something in the heart that they look for."
After setting baskets and trays of bread and cheese and other goods and beverages on the table, she went back one last time and ladled the stew into a pair of bowls. Satisfied with the simple but well-rounded spread, she looked at the terrified woman. "Come. Eat. You will feel better."

"I do not know what there is to be found in my heart," she says candidly, biting one corner of her lip. "There is precious little there." She shakes her head, as if to shake the meloncholy from her shoulders, and then smiles with courtly brightness at Alice. "Yes, I suppose I shall. Thank you!" Taking her mug along, she shall bring herself to the table, and though there is a brief moment of awkwardness regarding pulling out her own seat and sitting without having to adjust skirts, she manages well enough and looks upon the food with delight rather than disdain.
" .. oh. Do you know, I think I am very hungry, and this all looks marvelous. I am not at all cut out to be an adventurer, I think; I had not the foggiest notion of what to bring with me when I left!"

Alice chose not to comment on how obvious it was that the girl should be ravenous. Still, she was pleased that Marie was not turning her nose up at commoner's fare. Her cooking might not be fine foreign cuisine, but the hedge witch was confident that it was good and hardy.
"Well, at least now you've an idea what you might need, should you ever find yourself needing to travel again," she observed. In fact, it would be best if the girl resupplied before making the return trip. The carriages would not be running in this weather, but perhaps they could at least find an escort for the girl in Oldcastle. Of course, she would have to learn where the girl needed to be returned to before she could really do anything to help.
"Pray tell, where is it that you will be returning to?"

Marie shudders visibly at the suggestion that she might have cause to commit this crime again, putting down the piece of bread she has so carefully picked up. "Oh, perish the thought!" She cries, and shakes her head for further emphasis. "Let those that wish to travel do so of their own accord: I do not desire it in the least." She takes up another bite of the stew, thinking before she offers her answer, for one part of her does not want to truly confess her full identity. But would it not be rude, especially to one like Miss Alice, who has been so knowledgable, and so kind?
"I live in Palisade, on Hallow Oak way: it is not so fashionable these days, I know, but mother and I do well enough." She blushes as she confesses this, for it is a confession in truth: with the knowledge of her presence here, Marie fears (whether it is true or not) that Alice could easily ruin her.

Rather than further distress the girl, Alice chose not to mention that she may not have any choice in the matter. The lives of Chosen rarely went how they hoped they would. Marie might want nothing more than to remain in her hometown forever, but fate might not be so kind.
As to the specifics of the girl's living arrangements, the hedge witch could hardly care less. This "Hallow Oak" meant nothing to her, though Marie was clearly embarrassed to be living there. Of course, the girl could live on a pig farm and it would be of no consequence to Alice. She simply wanted to know where to send the girl. It did not come as a surprise to find that she came from Palisade.
"You've a long trek home, then," she observed. "But I am certain we can find someone to help you on your way."

Marie has taken a sizable bite of the stew when Alice announces this last, and must hurriedly swallow it, following it with a few quick mouthfuls of tea before she can speak. Her eyes are wide; this is plainly something she had not expected of Alice, no matter how kind she has been until now. "Truly? Is there anyone? Are we so close to a road?" She flushes again, looking chagrined once more, and glancing down at her stew as if the sight of the good meal will give her courage. "I .. lost the road, for a time."
Lost it? How does someone lose something stationary? More like, something frightened her and she ran off the road and promptly got lost. At least she seems to realize just how useless she is.

Alice gave the girl an arch look, but refrained from commenting on her navigational skills - or more accurately, the lack thereof.
"This house lies just outside the village of Ashdown," she said, fully aware that a lady from Palisade was unlikely to have the slightest clue where that was. She took a sip of her drink. "And Oldcastle is not much farther than that." At the very least, that ought to mean something to her.
"Possibly, there will be someone in the village. More likely, we will have to send you to Oldcastle and find an escort for you there." Whether Alice took her to Oldcastle or not depended on the circumstances...and how much she liked the girl.

If Marie were a more confident sort, she would point out that she navigates the tides and eddies of political currents at parties and social gatherings perfectly well .. it is only outside of that element that she finds herself at something of a loss. But she is not known for sharp, biting remarks, or any sharpness at all. She blushes underneath Alice's gaze, as good as a confession.
"Oh, that is good, if we are not far from Oldcastle!" She sounds relieved at that, to be given a landmark that she can recognize. "Mama has some cousins there; they do not like me very much, but I think they will at least spare me a cart to return home."

Well, that made things easier. It was a bit of a relief that Alice would not need to put herself out of her way to help the girl...though a tiny part of her was irritated at the girl's convenient connections. No matter. They would serve her well. If a Chosen was not resourceful, she should at least have connections and so far, little miss Marie was not looking very resourceful.
"Friendly or not, it is good you have family here," she said, and then paused a moment. "...what will you tell them?"
Unless they were going to come clean to the world, most would want an excuse with which to buy time concerning their...unexpected and lengthy disappearance.

This is an uncomfortable question, and causes Marie to pale: she looks down at her meal, and lingers over several bites as she considers it. Finally she gives another little shiver, thinking that she likes not this Choosing business so far; all it has done is frighten her, and led her to make a series of bold confessions she'd never have dared utter before. " .. pray forgive me, I do not know. Do -- do people about here know .. well -- .. do they know more of Guardians? In Palisade -- … we seem to know so little. Perhaps if it is more common here I might tell them the truth. I will hardly be able to hide him, once he has come."

"It is well enough known that Guardians have returned," she said. "Though some lend it more credence than others, and some do not want to admit it aloud, most know it to be true in their hearts."
With the Ward Tree so close and the history of Oldcastle being what it was, it would be difficult for anyone to truly deny Guardians. Magic was stronger here. More alive. There was no getting around it. Besides, Oldcastle and the surrounding villages probably saw more new Guardians than any other part of Sunderland. She supposed that it was all tied together - the Wood, the Tree, the ancient seat of the Chosen. As for hedge witches, well, she was certain that there was a place for them, too.
