As soon as she grabbed the rein with her teeth, he shifted his weight into his forelegs to brace for the pull. The ground gave a little beneath him but stayed fast. He used his size and strength to pull backward to free her. One hind leg pulled from the watery muck and stepped back slowly as his head tugged in the same direction.

As Azguard pulled backwards, Elliot tried to do what she could to pull herself out. With their combined strength, she managed to get out of the hole, but was now covered in mud. She made sure she had solid footing before stepping towards Azguard, and nuzzled against him. "Thank you Az. That was really scary."

He stepped back further, feeling movement from the mud. She was being pulled free. He didn't give up until he felt the rein go slack. Standing still now he looked over her muddy form. She was safe again, a relief to the stallion.
Her affectionate nuzzle had the male blinking and gulping down a lump in his throat. "It was uh, nothing. You're welcome." he responded and shook his head, jostling the rein until it settled behind his head once more. "Shall we continue?" he questioned, turning once he was sure she wasn't sinking again to start walking on. "There might be a nicer water source here somewhere.."

Feeling a bit self-conscious about her hug, she cleared her throat, mostly from embarrassment. "Sorry..." she whispered. She had never expressed any emotions towards Az before. Maybe it was just her being thankful, but she sort of felt it might be a bit more than that. They had spent a lot of time together. It would only be natural for that to happen.
As he moved ahead of her, she shook her head to rid herself of those thoughts. "Yes! I could use a bath now that I'm all muddy. I do hope we can find solid ground soon."

Facing away from her, he could hide any sign of emotion from what occurred. His cheeks were feeling warm. Even though he now felt awkward, he couldn't say he didn't like the small sign of affection. He just wouldn't show it if he could help it.
The large stallion pressed onward while eyeing the landscape. The further they tredded through the swamp, the closer they unknowingly came across a more.. unsavory area. The air started to thicken with a weird stench. Trees closed in the canopy above making the light harder to penetrate. "Hmm" He didn't remember this from before. Though each trip was different. "Careful.." he spoke out in a low tone. It felt as if eyes were watching them, though he couldn't see any.
A black log floated in the water several feet from them, most of it hidden in the mirky dark water.

 As she walked along behind him, she chewed on her lip in angst. It wasn't like her to care like that. Not about another Soquili, but rather that she cared how he had responded. Usually she would just let whatever happened happen, and go with it. It bothered her a little that he seemed so nonchalant about it. She sighed and followed along behind him quietly, lost in her thoughts. She questioned herself, and him, but really, she questioned her feelings and instincts. Then she giggled out loud, breaking the silence. It was silly of her to get so wrapped up about one hug. She decided then that she would just brush it off and move on. 'So what?' she thought, 'It was just one hug.'
She had slowed down while off in her own little world, and had to catch up. She heard him say something, but wasn't sure what it was. All she heard of it was "full." "Full?" she asked, puzzled. "What's full?" It was then that she stumbled over the log, and bumped right into the back of Azguard, her neck hitting pretty hard on his rump. She gasped in surprise, but was able to steady herself, but not before she heard a loud "SPLASH"

Azguard didn't know she wasn't paying attention. Or the fact that the log was moving in on them. Before he could turn his head to question her own question he felt a heavy hit against his flank causing his back legs to buckle briefly towards the water.
Everything was happening so fast. A splash sounded in the water at the same time that log Elliot had stumbled on came to life. It lunged at her back legs with snapping sharp teeth, an alligator hoping for a big meal. Azguard reacted as quick as he could, pushing her out of the way before those teeth could do more then snap at the air. A growl from the creature made those teeth all the more menacing with its second attack poised at the stallion.
Rearing up, he stomped his big hooves down at the gator landing one good hard smack to the hard scaly creature. That only aggravated it more making it start splashing and flailing it's body in attack, lunging for Azguard's legs. He bucked and kicked at the creature, sustaining a few deep bites and scrapes before he could briefly knock it unconscious with a well placed hoof to the head.

The force from his push sent her stumbling into the water, down onto her knees. She shrieked with fright as she fell and turned quickly to see what was happening, though it was all so fast, she could barely register it all. The alligator. Azguard. Teeth. Snapping. Thrashing. Kicking. Biting. It all came in flashes. She was terrified, both of the creature and for their safety. "Azguard!!!" she screamed, trying frantically to get to her feet. After two failed attempts and a mouthful of water and mud, she finally succeeded, just as he kicked the alligator right in the head, giving them the chance to run. She didn't need instruction. Instinct took over and she ran, as well as any four legged equine could run in a swampy mess like that, but she managed to find footing and keep it. She looked back, making sure he was okay as they made their way to safety.

The adrenaline in his system kept the stallion going, giving the gator another kick before turning to follow Elliot. The water splashing high as he ran washing away the blood from his wounds. At their pace it wasn't long that the swamps turned to more solid ground again. When they got far enough away and the pain started to set in, he called out for her to slow down.
Azguard slowed to a slow canter, wincing with each step. "I think we are okay now" he said as his heart slowed to its normal beating. He looked her over, mostly over her legs "Are you alright?"

As he slowed and called out to her, she felt safe enough to do the same. She circled around and matched pace with him. "I'm ok. Just a few bumps and bruises, maybe a scrape or two from some rocks, but I'll be fine." She could feel the sting of a fresh scrape on her knees and her shoulder was a bit bruised where she had practically fallen against him. "That was so scary," she whispered. It was then that she noticed his limp and quickly scanned his body for injury. She saw the bite marks on his legs. "Oh no, Az. You're injured." She stopped to examine them more closely. "It looks like that old alligator took a bite out of you," she frowned.

Shaking the pain off wasn't a simple solution to his problem. At least not fully. He could feel his strength had weakened enough to make his gait limp, a favor to one leg in particular show. She was starting to fuss over him when she took notice, he could tell. "I'll be fine" he stated simply.
He stopped walking to stand in place. It was easier to block it out if he could take a moment to stop thinking about it. His eyes closed momentarily then opened again to look over at her. "I'm sorry for pushing you.." he said, feeling some guilt for her bruising since he pushed her to keep her from more injury.
With a deep inhale he motioned for her to continue. "Still a days walk at this pace." What a mess the pair were by this point. Muddy, bruised and bleeding. From his experience he surely would never think twice about ever taking one of those creatures as a friend.

Sighing, she followed along. It was no use to argue with him. When he was on a delivery, that was all that was on his mind. "I'm fine, don't worry about it," her voice hinting at a smile. She watched as he walked ahead of her, and could tell he was in pain. "Couldn't we just rest for a little bit? Your leg must really be hurting," she offered. "Besides, we aren't in a hurry are we? The package is-" She stopped, looking on the ground, and behind them from where they'd come. "Err....Az.....where's the package?"

In honesty he wouldn't know what to do with himself if it wasn't for his work. It kept him busy. It let him explore and meet others without having to be overly sociable. And the smiles most times when the recipients got their deliveries made it a little more worth it. Even if he hobbled the rest of the way there, he didn't want to stop to dwell on it. Wouldn't make the pain lessen or go away for that matter. "I'll be fine Elliot" he commented in a stoic tone. He wasn't bugged that she was still trying to fuss over him just a bit.
Hearing her query he stopped dead in his tracks once more. If she was asking about the package... he turned his head to look back to his saddle where the box should have been still hunkered down with its frayed rope. He felt a little panic set in. He lost it! Some where in the swamp. A shudder ran through him though he did his best to control the intensity of it so she wouldn't see he was nervous going back. No he wasn't scared. He would go back to find it. "Stay here" he told her sternly, not wanting her to return with him and find the alligator once more causing trouble. If it were to find him at least he would have little else to worry about. He turned then and trudged off back in the direction they came. He had to find that package! He wasn't about to let someone down without it.
Was it just him or did it seem darker when approaching the swamps again? He could feel the ground turn softer under heavy hooves before he would step into the mucky waters. The tree coverage was dense, letting very little light in. It was harder here to retrace steps since it was covered in water leaving no hoof prints to follow. Usually he would be able to go by memory. Every trip he took, especially in difficult terrain such as this, he would memorize where he moved. Using landmarks of rocks or trees to guide his way. The sudden brush with the alligator and their run for safety made it difficult to save anything to memory. He glanced around and followed the direction he thought they might have run through.

She watched his expressions change as thoughts ran through his mind. She knew he wouldn't want her to go back, but she wasn't going to just stay there and wait for him to come back....or not come back. "You are dumber than a stump if you really think I'm not coming back with you Azguard." she huffed at him, and followed along behind him. "I'm not letting you go back to that alligator without me."
As they approached the swampy marsh again, she wrinkled her nose in disgust. She hated the feel of the slippery muck around her hooves and ankles, but she would trudge through it for him.
"Do you think it's in the water?" she whispered. "If it is, can it even be saved?" She secretly hoped that it couldn't because that would mean they wouldn't stay here too long to look for it, but if it could be saved, then she would stick by him and help him find it, no matter what.

He ignored the comment she had made about him trying to leave her in safety. It was better to not comment and forget it then let it bother him. In any case he figured she wouldn't listen to him anyway. His head wasn't in the right place to try to convince her either.
The trek back was slow as he tried to pick out any signs of their travel. There had to be raised ground or tracks some where. It took awhile but he finally found a partial hoof print that came from his own hooves. They followed in this direction as he scoured for the package. His ears pricked when she said something. "Possibly. I don't know.." he responded. He hated to think the worst of its condition before seeing it. There was a ripple in the murky water that made him pause in step. His eyes fixed on the surface waiting for whatever it was to be known. A small snake slithered past, not even giving them a thought after a flick of its tongue.
It took over an hour to reach the area they had been when the incident occurred. He treaded slowly keeping an eye out for that alligator to show itself again. Everything was quiet and still except for a few bugs flying around. "I don't.." before he could finish that statement he caught sight of a corner of a box sticking up out of the murky water. He was saddened to see from here that it would surely be water damaged. Heavily. He trotted closer and carefully worked it out of the mud and water, the paper covering it stripping off in clumps. He glanced over to Elliot with a silent look of dismay
