She barely knew what was going on. She barely knew that the stallion that had seemed so threatening earlier today was helping to keep her on her feet now. She was not feeling very well, and she shook her head silently in reply to his concern. She was grateful for his help, grateful for the company.
"I promise not to re-enter your territory...if you promise to stay with me for a while longer," she said, deciding to lay down in the long grass of the plain. She wanted desperately for him to stay. She knew it was selfish, she knew he had things to do, and that he had given her so much already. But she knew that she could not simply watch him walk away after what he had done for her. She wasn't afraid of predators, she wasn't afraid of the dark. She was afraid of the state of her mind at the moment. What if her mind blotted him out the next day, along with all of her other memories? She would continue on her journey having no guidance whatsoever, and she would become the weak thing that he advised her against being. She would never find herself. She needed to ingrain him into her mind, needed to make sure he stayed in her memories. Besides, it was comforting to have someone standing over her and making sure that she was ok, even if he wasn't the most pleasant being to be around.
She tried hard not to focus on what she had just experienced. She would think about it more and follow the clues of the flashback when she was not so shaken. It was logical to rest right now, physically and mentally. She wanted to learn more about him. His eyes had given her so much insight, but only instilled more curiosity in her heart. "Tell me about yourself...Why do you seem so angry?" she asked, looking up at him in the darkness and still feeling a little light-headed. Angry was the wrong word, but she didn't have the willpower to find another.

He had to oblige to her words if he really didn't want to see her ever again. Even though it was saddening for him to never really be able to make friends or friendships with others, he had gotten use to it over time. So use to it that he didn't have anyone, but family. "I will as long as you keep your word." He said to her and felt she was being a little selfish, but he didn't mind for some odd reason. This was probably the first time ever someone actually asked him to stay. He was going to ask her why she wanted him around, but the answer was obvious. She wanted to make sure she was safe and since it was kind of his job, he would give it his all.
Talk about himself? He never did something like that before. No one really cared to hear about his life let alone what he was like. He only supposed he was around the wrong people for the longest time. Digging his hoof into the ground, he took a long deep breath as he tried to focus on what he could say to her. "I'm not angry all the time. I am just not a social being. Your the first stranger I have spoken to in a long time. Most of my life is spent with my family. I don't really lead that much of an exciting existence." He told her lightly as he continued to stand there acting as a guard. At least there was nothing in the area that could pose as a thread for the pair. He was happy about that at least.
"Why do you want to know about me anyway? It's not really any of your business." He scoffed at her, but maybe that was being a little too harsh about it. The least he could do was tell her a little bit about himself. Not all of it, but enough. It wasn't like he was going to see her again.
There was more to be said. Much more, but he didn't know how to say it or if she even wanted to hear it all. "I don't know what more you want to hear..I grew up in a rather tight knitted family unit. From a young age my fate was decided for me. I didn't have a choice so I was raised to be a warrior or a battler if you want to call it that. I have no emotion nor do I feel pain for others. I don't fear anything and being around others makes me uncomfortable. There isn't many I get along with and usually keep to myself.. My life story is far too long to tell you. I know I am far older then you and I have seen a lot in my life. A lot of hardships." He told her in a gruff voice as he looked back over to her, keeping a gaze on her through his thick bangs. He didn't even know why he was talking to her really...it was something so unusual for him. "Let's just leave it at that." He snorted turning away from her a bit and looking out into the distance.
"What about you? Do you remember anything at all?" He asked her even though deep down he ultimately didn't care.

She was silent, figuring she would never return here and that they both knew that.
Her heart fell a little at his indignant response, or rather his inability to give a response. What had she expected? Story time? No. He wasn't like that. She laughed inwardly at herself for bothering. But she couldn't help but feel curious about him. After all, she hadn't met anyone really, so of course he was interesting to her. "I want to know about you because I don't know anything anymore. I don't know this world, or any other," she muttered under her breath, feeling like a scolded foal. She could feel her face burning from slight embarrassment.
He was giving her the basics, she knew that. She had guessed as much as he was telling her now. She wanted to jump into his mind, wanted to figure out what was behind that tough exterior. But he was right, it was none of her business. So she laid quietly, listening to his words and blinking at the ground cluelessly.
"I don't believe that you have no emotion, Jeremiah," she found herself saying lightly and looking up at him. He was blunt, rude, and even offensive, but he was not a monster. If he had no feelings and felt no pain for others, then why was he here now? She also doubted that he feared nothing. She didn't want to challenge him on those things though, and she kept the thoughts in her mind so that her grumpy guardian would not leave.
"I remember my name and...warmth and voices and holly being put in my mane, and then blood on the snow...but it's all fuzzy, and there is nothing else," she said obscurely, thinking about the puzzle pieces and frowning. There was nothing else in her memories, just fog and fuzz. What would take him hours to tell, took her one sentence. His life story was full and meaningful and long, and hers took up one broken sentence. It seemed so unfair to her, but she didn't blame him. She only blamed herself. She felt tears coming and bit her lip hard to avoid them. She couldn't stop a few from running down her cheeks.

Hearing silence between them both, he turned his head only to see a few tears falling down the mare's cheeks. He didn't know how to comfort her let alone ask her what was upsetting her. Was it his story? He knew it was long and sad, but it was his life. Everyone had a different story to tell and not everyone had the same thing. He just didn't think his story was something to cry over unless something else was bothering her. Now only if he could word his question right.. "Is something wrong?" He asked as he slowly made his way over to her giving her a long gaze through his bangs. He wasn't good with this kind of thing and didn't like to be around someone who was emotional or crying. It always made him feel uncomfortable or bring up some bad war memories. "Blood in the snow? It sounds like you were attacked..Don't think about it anymore. It will come to you over time." He gave a firm nod before looking back into the darkening forest.
His plan was to stay there until morning, but the night was taking forever to move on. He only assumed it was because he was having a conversation with someone. "Emotions are something I have learned to live without. For instance your tears..I haven't cried since I was a young colt. If I cried every time someone died or left without a word then I probably would have ended up dead as well. Emotions can cripple you." He watched her closely before walking over into the clearing a little bit. He didn't go too far because he wanted to keep a close eye on Isi.
"Don't cry about this..Grow from this. Alright?" He said to her turning back and shaking his mane a little bit. He didn't know what else to say to her at this very moment. "Are you getting sleepy?" He asked her feeling himself getting a little drowsy. He had been up for two days straight so he didn't know how much longer he would be able to keep it up. He slowly shut his eyes and stood there listening to all the sounds around him. He was tired, but there was no way he was going to tell her that.

"Oh, I'm alright," she said with a pathetic sob. She sniffed and stifled her tears as quickly as she could. She could see him stiffen at the sight of tears. She wondered if he got any more uncomfortable if he would turn into stone. He seemed close to it already. She giggled softly at the idea, and was cheered up momentarily by her own silly joke. Poor Jeremiah, he would think she was crazy. Was she crazy? Her expression returned to its normal sulky and somber look and she looked up at him. "Attacked...yes I was thinking the same thing," she said, finally facing the facts of the flashback. He was right, thinking about it in great detail would not help her much. Its meaning was obvious and there was no need to decipher symbols or clues.
"Yes, emotions can be dangerous...but they can be relieving as well. It can be crippling to hold them in," she said. She knew there had to be many things he was saddened by, many things that would make normal stallions fall to their knees with emotion.
She watched him walk away and was briefly worried that he was leaving. When he turned back to her however, she was reassured that he was staying, and she promptly relaxed once again. What would she have done if he had left? What could she have done? He would be gone by morning, she had to accept that. She thought for a moment about sending him on his way now to avoid prolonging the inevitable, but she couldn't. She became disappointed at her dependence, at her reliance on others to help her. But what else could she do? How else could she survive?
"Yes, sleepy," she lied. She knew she needed rest, but she was far from "sleepy." She couldn't see his eyes close because of his bangs, but she seemed to feel their white hot gaze move away from her and the rest of the world. He had to be tired from putting up with her. "Good night Jeremiah," she whispered. And then she fell silent, hoping to give him some well deserved peace.
