He really had no idea where to go, and she had not been murdered in her sleep for a few weeks. So far so good, she had mused. He was a bit...odd, but he was earnest, quite sweet and that awkward slowness was even charming, and sometimes he was strangely deliberate and it was adorable. She found he did listen, even if he had no idea what to say, and so had no qualms pouring out any of her thoughts. It had been an unexpectedly good time. She was quite pleased about the entire affair, and in return had given him her matter-of-fact affection. Perhaps in some way, he had made up for their first encounter.

If he could have read her thoughts, it might have ended differently. More likely it would have not - it was not a thing he could help, the strange sudden beating of fear in his chest, the strange sudden suffocation of a giant bird’s wings, beating, beating, over his heart. This time it happened one morning, from dark to dawn, as he watched her sleeping while the sun slowly rose. The creeping rays painted rose across her pale flanks, and she looked exceptionally lovely. He watched her sleeping and felt he loved her so much at that very moment he could die. And that was when it came, that great, strange bird, and he could no longer breathe.
He stumbled back, alarmed, and he could not breathe. This was love, this terrifying creature, this great bird that flapped and smothered, that cawed and clawed and clawed and stabbed at his heart. He loved her so much that he would die - he didn’t yet know how to die, and so instead
instead
as he always did
he ran.

She woke to the distant sound of pounding hooves, yawned, and shook her hair out of her eyes. Her strange light-and-dark shadow was gone, and she was alone. She stretched up and trotted about the area, searching, but not expectant.

He was long gone, far far gone. Beyond the reach of any call, of any searching eyes. He was running, heart full, spilling, beating, pulling, hurting, bruised, Black-Eyed, on the run again.

She gave it a while, just for completion's sake, and shrugged as she settled to chew on a nearby shrub. It had been good while it lasted...but he was so odd that she really shouldn’t have expected it to last very long. Why do I always get the weirdos?END
