Jacen had adjusted to his new home quite nicely. Nicer than what could have been expected, by any accounts. The formerly wild pokemon had taken to "adopting" things. These were generally inanimate items; and generally made of something cold. The poor vanilite simply did not understand why his babies kept melting!
The third time the ice pokemon had brought a snow-vanilite into the house only to find it melted to a puddle in the bucket he'd used for a cone, Jacen had burst into tears. He had rushed to his trainer and clung to her--attempting to explain that something was wrong. Very wrong! His babies! They kept turning into water! Would Mariana fix it? Could she turn them back? He pointed to the bucket hopefully, a sniffle escaping him.
Mariana was unable to repair his snow vanilite--but she did send him to a toy store not far outside the woods with her younger sister Mabel. "Come on then, Jacen," she coaxed the distraught vanilite with a smile. "We'll go find you a friend who won't melt! How about that, hm?" She grinned at the vanilite as the ice pokemon's expression changed.
"Nil?"
"That's right." It wasn't a long drive to the poketoy store. When they arrived, she helped the shaken vanilite out of his seat and grinned at him. "Come on," she said, gesturing to the door. "I bet there's all sorts of babies for you to take care of!" The younger woman had been told of Jacen's love for taking care of smaller things. Mabel thought it was an endearing characteristic. She would have to encourage it further. She scooped him up and carried him in. "Go on then, Jace," she said, giving the vanilite a gentle push towards the pokedolls. "Pick two. Small to medium--" she stiffened when Jacen struggled over with a vanilite plush far bigger than he was.
"That wouldn't fit in the backseat," she said, shaking her head. Her older sister wouldn't allow her to buy him that one--it was far too big! It'd take up too much space in their small cabin in the woods. "No, love. Pick two smaller ones." She pointed to a selection of various sized pokedolls, smiling at the vanilite. "Maybe you can pick one for Alistair, too! Do you see one he'd like?" She was not above spoiling her older sister's pokemon.
It took longer than expected. Jacen was set on having multiples of every plush in the store. It took much coaxing to convince him that Mariana would bring him again--and maybe she'd get him the big vanilite, too! Wouldn't that be nice? Jacen was so delighted with this aspect that he settled for two medium sized pokedolls--just large enough for him to cradle, as well as a deino pokedoll Mariana was certain Alistair would enjoy. Until he destroyed it. He was quite a bit rougher on things than Jacen seemed to be.
When they finally arrived home, Mabel could only grin at her sister. "Sorry we're late," she chirped cheerfully, then lowered her voice, "He had trouble deciding," she said in Mariana's ear. "Picked one out for Ali, too, though." She held out the deino plush. "Spitting image of him, don't you think?"

In the short while Jacen had been living with Mariana, he had collected many things. His trainer's younger sister had provided him with a box after seeing the unsightly mess on the floor next to his makeshift bed. "Here you go, Jacen," Mabel had said. "Somewhere to keep your babies nice and cozy at night, and to keep them safe from big stomping feet, hm?" The vanilite had thanked her by wrapping his short arms around her legs, and then proceeded to place each of his belongings in the box. He did so carefully, making sure each of them had enough room to be comfortable.
He had done this every day since; checking each doll to make sure they were comfortable in the box when he tucked them into bed. He'd even found an old towel he could put over them so they had a blanket, just like Mariana did!
On the fifth night of doing just that, however, the vanilite noticed something strange. Something was glowing! Inside the box, where his babies were! What was it? Would it hurt them? Jacen bounced over to the box in concern--and when he looked over the edge, his eyes widened. He stared. Oh, it was something shiny! Something wonderful! Had his trainer left this for him? Or was it Alistair's? If it was, surely the deino would want it back--but he wouldn't get it back! He'd left it in Jacen's box, that meant it belonged to Jacen!
And what a nice thing to belong to Jacen! The vanilite was certain his dolls were found of him. He picked up the star, meaning to cradle it like he often did with his many belongings. His last coherent thoughts were of the newest addition to his family. A shiny star baby!

Jacen gets a new trainer (Set after Marianna abandons Jacen, but before starfinding). "Now don't go too far...and be careful where you walk...use your cane..." there was a patient smile on the child's face as she listened to all the last minute instructions being given as her light sweater was put on her, cane in her hand, and her bag of supplies on her shoulders. "I will papa I promise." Molly gave a good natured smile in the direction of her fathers voice and the girl stepped outside using her white tipped cane to feel her way around carefully. She was slight, several inches shorter than all the other ten and eleven year olds, evidence of her mothers difficult pregnancy really. No matter how much Molly ate she was short, and she was thin. Her hair hung down her back in braided pig tails, the pretty reddish brown naturally wavy and standing out against her blue knit sweater. She walked without seeing, long ago used to having been born blind, and after carefully counting the amount of steps she needed, and listening to things she was at her destination. A tree at the far edge of her fathers property. Kids ran and laughed all around, and one even pointed going "Look! It's the freak! HAHAHA! FREEEAAAK!" Did it hurt? Yes. Did she let the hurt show? No. A nearby vanilite had heard the commotion. Its face puffed up as it inhaled air--and quickly, a blast of cold air made its way over to the kids laughing at the girl. "Nil, nil, nil!" Jacen scolded them, waving a hand at them. The other hand clutched a vanilite plush to him. "Nil nil nil!" it continued, huffing at them. It went to Molly's side, nuzzling her hand gently. "Nil?" he asked. Was she alright? He'd dealt with the bullies! She was fine, wasn't she? Oh, he hoped, how he'd hoped. "Van! Vanilite!" She wasn't a freak! They were freaks, all of those children picking on her. She was pretty! And she seemed nice. She didn't need to deal with people like that. Molly was ignoring them as she did best, she had pulled a book from her bag one her father had gotten special for her last birthday and she was letting her fingers travel over the bumps on the page letting her fingers do the reading for her. Of course she was happy, it was a book on pokemon! She could even trace the pictures and get an idea on how they looked. So engrossed in her book that she thought the commotion she heard was all in her imagination and she had a rather vivid one really! It was the shrieks of the kids that it was too cold that made her mark her place and close the book setting it aside. Good thing too as her hand was being nuzzled and she gasped in shock at the cold. Listening though a dazzling smile came across her face. "Oh! A Vanilite! Ohhh!" she couldn't help a soft giggle and her hand patted him gently as she reached into her bag and felt around a small container opened and she pulling out a poffin. "Are you hungry? Did you chase all those kids off for me? Thank you!" oh the happy note to her voice. "You're so nice...you must belong to someone...Hello?! Is anyone there? Did someone lose their Vanilite?" The vanilite took the poffin from Molly carefully, giving an exclaimation of jubilation. "Vaaaan!" he exclaimed, plopping the pastry into his mouth. "Van nil lite! Van!" he nuzzled her hand happily. Did she have another poffin? Poffins were the best! She had more, didn't she? "Nil?" he asked, tilting his head slightly. He held out his hand for another. "Nil nil! Van nil lite!" He shook his head when she said he must belong to someone. He had, once. But she had left him in the woods to fend for himself. He wasn't sure she had kept the other pokemon in her possession, either, now that he thought about it. But if she hadn't--what had become of the deino he'd come to recognize as his sibling? And if she had, why had she chosen to keep him instead? "Nil," he said, nuzzling her hand sadly. No. No, he didn't have a trainer. He didn't have anyone. She was so used to tones of voice, that even though he was a Pokemon, she could tell he was sad. Why was he so sad? She thought another poffin was in order, and pulled one out for him holding her hand out. "Here do you want another poffin sweetie?" her words were kind and she waited for it to be taken, feeling the vanilite shaking it's head no. "You don't have a trainer? Really?" she frowned some. Yes she felt bad for the little thing, he was so sweet and tame...he had to have had someone. Had they gotten hurt? Died? Certainly not abandoned him! "Would you like a new trainer? I mean...I can't really run and play with you...and I don't have any other pokemon...but I'd love you and take care of you." there was a soft hope in her voice as she asked. "Nil?" Jacen looked up as another poffin was offered. He took it in both his hands and held it up gleefully. "Nil, nil, nil!" he exclaimed, nuzzling the pastry. He didn't eat it that time. Instead he placed it carefully next to the vanilite plush he'd set on the ground. "Van!" he thanked her, moving to hug her. He was unable to wrap his arms around her, but he hoped she recognized the gesture. New trainer? The vanilite's eyes widened hopefully. He'd hoped to find one. Oh, he'd hoped. He'd asked other pokemon, when they came to the clearing in the forest he'd claimed as his own. "Van!" he gave a nod, reattaching himself to Molly. "Nil lite!" Molly could feel him trying to hug her and she shifted being careful as she did just that a brighter smile yet on her face. "Okay let me find a pokeball..." she reached into her bag then and felt around a specific pocket, feeling the markings her dad had put on them so she could tell the types apart and pulled one out. "Okay hold still since I can't see you. But can you make some noise so I can hear you?" the ball was held up ready to gently throw it at the vanilite. "Ohh my first ever pokemon and it's a vanilite! My favorite!" there was a squeal of delight from her then as she tossed the ball gently, waiting...listening...and once it had signaled that the pokemon was caught she reached out her hands, they feeling along the grass and she curled her hand around the ball eyes filling with tears. "I caught one! Papa'll be so proud! Come out vanilite!" the ball had been turned so the little pokemon could come back out and she laughed wiping her eyes. Jacen came out of the pokeball, and hurried to Molly's side. He blinked up at her, and attempted to lean forward to wipe at her tears. Why was she crying? What was wrong? "Van?" he asked, tilting his head. Shouldn't she be happy? She'd caught him! "Nil lite?" He attached himself to her leg, holding up his vanilite plush. He pressed it into her hand. "Vanilite!" "I'm okay I'm just really happy! No one ever thought I could, or would catch a Pokemon and now I have you!" she beamed though a curious expression crossed her face and she let her hands trace the doll. "Ohhh..is this your toy?" she made sure to be very careful with it! Though it hit her...this sweet little vanilite needed a name! "I'm going to call you Sweetie...because thats what you are, is a sweetheart." it wasn't a terribly good name but it was her first time naming anything after all. Sweetie? What kind of name was that? Jacen made a face, but didn't protest outloud. He couldn't have, even if he had wanted to. He took his vanilite plush from Molly, nuzzling her hand. Maybe they could show him off now? He was a rather nice looking vanilite, after all. "Nil?" he suggested. It was a good thing she couldn't see the face he made, because she'd have wondered what was wrong! Instead she was carefully packing everything back into her bag and getting her arms through the straps, her walking stick found and she held out her hand to him. "Follow me Sweetie! I might fall carrying you and hurt you, and I don't want that." she turned towards the house and began the careful trek back counting her steps until she reached the door. "Papa! Papa! Come quick!" she heard running footsteps and an out of breath "What's wrong Molly? What happened?" "The greatest thing ever papa!" she stepped to the side and let her father see her new pokemon. "You caught a pokemon? All by yoursel?" "Sweetie got rid of all the mean kids picking on me, and let me catch her!" why yes...Molly thought her Vaniilite was a girl... Molly's dad looked down at the pokemon and smiled. "Well lets get her set up shall we?" Jacen took her hand reluctantly. Whatever name she gave him, though, she was still his trainer. He bounced after her, carefully making sure she didn't trip. He wasn't sure what he could do if she did trip--him being so much smaller than she was, but he'd try. "Nil?" he tilted his head up at the man. He nodded in agreement, he had gotten rid of the bullies--hey! He wasn't a she! He shook his head frantically at the man, hoping he'd understand. His name wasn't Sweetie, and he wasn't a she! "Molly dear, I think Sweetie doesn't like being called a girl.....I think this is a boy." he let them in and closed the door behind them all as Molly paused. "Not a girl? Oh...well then I shouldn't call you Sweetie...ohhh...I don't know what to call you now!" she frowned thoughtfully as she pulled her bag off and felt carefully for the hook for it and hung it up, her sweater taken off and hung up as well before her bag was pulled down and she started towards her room. "I'll find something for him to sleep on while you think of a new name Molly." "Okay papa we'll be in my room!" and she went that way the stick left behind and paused outside her door. "This is out room! Over there is papa's. I'll show you around the house in a bit. We need to come up with a good name for you now!" Jacen nodded vigorously as Molly's father said he was a boy. "Nil?" he asked, tilting his head slightly. "Nil nil!" A new name? Sweetie wasn't appropiate for a boy's name? Oh well, he hadn't liked it anyway. Our room? Hm... "Nil!" he exclaimed, bouncing inside. He studied his surroundings carefully, for a moment, before beaming. "Nil! Vaaaaan!" Molly stood there "looking" around the room trying to think of a good spot for him. "Need to find the best spot for you. I'm used to how everything is laid out and I don't want to accidentally trip over you if I forget you're there...hmmm..." finally she pushed a few things away from the side of the head of her bed about the time her dad came in with some pillows and blankets. "This is the best I have, I'll find something better tomorrow. Now, have we thought of a better name?" "Noooo....all I can think of is Frost...but it doesn't feel like the right name either." Molly sighed and sat on the bed while her dad made up a spot for the pokemon. "Frost doesn't seem bad." "But it's not good either." "Nil?" Jacen didn't understand most of what Molly was telling him, but he tried. He understood that she was different from most people. He knew that that was why those other children had been bullying her and calling her names. And he knew that she needed a stick to walk. He wondered if it could be fixed. Would Molly be happy if it could be? He beamed up at Molly's father when pillows and blankets were brought in. Oh, if only the man knew. He had been sleeping in the hollow of a tree for the last few weeks. One abandoned by a hoothoot, the vanilite had figured. A blanket was a blessing. He hopped onto Molly's bed and shimmied into her lap. "Nil, vanilite!" Molly giggled at the addition to her lap and hugged him carefully. "Okay so Frost it is...it's better than Sweetie. I love you already Frost! You protected me from those mean kids and you didn't have to." she looked so happy hugging the pokemon! "Papa, can he sleep in my bed?" "I suppose he can sometimes yes. Just remember he's an ice pokemon, so you might want to have him laying on your blankets, and cover him with the ones I have against your wall. Here, give me your hand and I'll show you where his bed is." "Okay papa." she stood up and held a hand out, the other still holding Jacen, and was 'shown' where it all was. "Thank you papa!" "You're welcome Molly. If you'll be okay for a bit I'll go down and make sure we have everything needed to feed a pokemon." "Okay! I have some poffins I can give him until then." "Good girl. I'll lock up and be back in about ten minutes." Frost was a much better name than Sweetie, Jacen agreed wholeheartedly. But he could hardly blame the girl. She couldn't see that he was clearly a Jacen, not a Frost or a Sweetie. Or even, that he wasn't a girl. "Van!" he assured her. He would protect her any time. She was his friend. And thos kids had no right to bully her. "Nil lite! Van!" He would always be there for her. He settled himself down on her bed with a yawn. Being caught was tiring! Who knew? Molly carefully took her shoes off and set them where she always did before she was stretching out on the bed with him and smiled as her head hit her pillow. "Are you tired Frost? We can lay down and rest for awhile papa won't mind if we're asleep when we come home." her hand reached out and patted him gently. "Thank you for finding me Frost, I've never been so happy before!" Jacen gave another yawn, leaning his head against Molly's pillow. He held up his vanilite plush before carefully making sure it too had a spot on the pillow. He gave it a kiss on the cheek, before moving to place a chilly kiss onto Molly's as well. He was happy he'd found Molly, too. They needed each other. Molly giggled at the soft kiss and patted him again a soft yawn coming from her. So much excitement had left her tired out! She snuggled into her blankets, and pulled a corner of it over Jacen so he'd be covered too, and yawned again softly. "Sleep well Frost." her voice trailed off as she fell into her nap rather quickly.

Are you an Angel? Jacen has changed to a child! How will this change things with Molly?
Molly had been in bed for awhile.....almost a week! She had gotten very sick and she wasn't allowed out of bed unless it was to go to the bathroom and even then, she needed help she was so weak. Her usually bright eyes were dull from fever, and her long hair was almost always damp with sweat. The little girl had been caught outside in a sudden down pour and hadn't managed to get back inside quick enough slipping a few times in the wet grass and getting all turned around trying to find her way back to the door.
Her only comfort while stuck in bed had been her Vanillite who she clung to often despite her papa warning her it would be bad for Frost if she did that too much, that she could make him sick too, and she didn't want to make him sick too did she? Of course not, but he was better than even her big stuffed bunny with it's long fuzzy ears she liked to hug and play with. Before catching the pokemon anyhow! That morning was different.. her fever had finally broken to a point...and she was reaching for water unable to find it. That was the issue with being blind. If something got moved even a little...well it was hard to locate! She was so thirsty though...and starting to get cranky from it, tears welling up in her eyes and a soft little cry came from her. Her whole body still ached!
Jacen had picked up the glass of water, sensing his trainer's upset. He wasn't sure how to deliver it, though, and so instead of handing it to her, he dipped a finger into the glass--and placed his cold hand to her lips. "Are you okay??" he asked, fretfully. Was she okay now? He had worried for a long time. He'd lost track of it, after he'd found that star under Molly's bed. He'd meant to give it to her last night, but something had happened... He wasn't sure what. "It's okay," he said, keeping his voice low. The vanilite boy knew something about him had changed, but he wasn't sure what. He was--more like Molly now, he supposed. He didn't want her father finding out and kicking him out of the house now that he couldn't fit in his bed any longer. He put a gentle hand to Molly's forehead. "Your fever's gone down," he said, with a small smile.
"You'll be okay, Molly," he promised. He slowly pressed the cup of water into her hands. "Here," he said. "Sit up slowly..."
The cold hand on her lips was startling and brought a low gasp from her as her eyes widened. Someone was in the room with her? Who? He sounded concerned...and knew her name...so he wasn't a stranger. "I feel sort of wet...and sore..." well no wonder between being drenched in a cold sweat from the fever breaking to the residual issues from being so sick. She'd be fine after a bath and a few days of proper rest.
"I was sick?" she didn't remember being sick. Didn't recall she'd been delirious with fever and pain. A doctor had come to her and checked on her often giving her medicine to get better. None of that was recalled clearly.
The cup put into her hands was brought up and she drank from it, draining it after a few moments a soft 'ah' as she exhaled and licked her lips. They were too dry, felt like they'd cracked and bled a little. "Who are you? ...and where's Frost?" her hand began patting at the bed. "Maybe papa's taking care of him..." one hand reached for her blankets to pull it back.
"My name's Jacen," Jacen introduced himself, awkwardly. "Well, er. Well. I know your Papa isn't taking care of Frost because... I'm Frost. Only I'm not, because I'm Jacen," this was difficult. How was he going to explain to his trainer--the little blind girl he'd protected, that he was the pokemon she'd caught. He took her hand and gently raised it to his face. "See?" he said. "I feel the same. I'm cold. I'm your vanilite." The boy paused, taking her hand from his face and into his own. He gave it a squeeze. "I promise Molly. I'll always take care of you."
"Jacen..." the unfamiliar name was repeated and she gave him a warm smile. "It's so nice to meet you Jacen, thank you for taking care of me while papa's busy." she blinked as the rest of his words sunk in. "You're....you can't be Frost...Frost is a pokemon...he's this big..." and she held her hands an approximate distance apart.
Her hand brushed over his face slowly, fingertips brushing over cool cheeks, traced over eyelids and soft but cold lips. "But...how?" how was he...not a pokemon? Her voice suddenly dropped to a whisper. "Did I die like mama did? ...is that it? You can tell me if you're really an angel Jacen. Oh poor papa...first mama, now me...poor Frost..." tears trickled down her cheeks at the thought of being dead and leaving them behind.
"You must be a very busy angel Jacen. It's okay really....I had hoped...that maybe when I died..and became an angel too, I'd be able to see...but I guess not....but thats okay!" she sniffled softly. It was easy to see she was still on the road to recovery by her behavior. "No, no," Jacen rushed to calm her. "You're not dead! I promise. I am Frost. I'm just... different now. I think maybe an angel... maybe your Momma... sent a star to me. I found one, under your bed. I was going to give it to you. I thought it might be medicine. I thought it would help you get better..." the vanilite boy hesitated awkwardly. "But when I picked it up..." he squinted in thought. "I can't...I don't remember. I'm sorry." He gave her hand another squeeze. "Your papa's downstairs... he hasn't seen me yet. But I promise. I'm your Frost. I'll take care of you." How would he ever get her to believe him? "Maybe... Maybe you can call me back into your pokeball. Would that prove it?" He wasn't sure if it would work--but maybe if it didn't, he could pretend it did? He was hers, after all. He was her vanilite--and she was still his trainer!
She wasn't sobbing, there was just silent tears of acceptance trickling from her eyes and down her cheeks, dripping off her chin slowly. She was dead, that was all there was to it. Right? Poor Frost...poor Papa... Another soft sniffle and she wiped at her face and eyes. She was behaving very badly in front of Jacen the angel and needed to compose herself and be a good girl. She shouldn't be so sad at being dead. So she listened to him talking instead. "A star? I've heard stars are really pretty...do you really think my mama sent it to you Jacen?"
A smile was on her face then, and she reached for the Pokeball that stayed on the window next to her bed, fingers closing over it. "I can try...but you're a silly angel...you don't belong in Pokeballs." she let her fingers smooth over the ball and she pointed it at the boy. "Fro....uhm...Jacen...return..." of course it wouldn't work...he was too big now...part human or something.
She let a moment pass, hearing nothing, and with a surprised look "Come out Jacen!" her voice was a little happier...maybe she wasn't dead then! Though suddenly her eyes widened in dread..."Oh no...ohhh...noooo...if I'm not dead...if you're really Frost...then papa...oh no...he can't send you away! He just can't!" her voice broke on the last word, coming out as a scared sob. "I don't want you to go Jacen!"
"See, I told you," Jacen said, smiling warmly. He tried to extend that warmth into his voice now, now that he understood that Molly was blind. "If you ask him not to, I don't think he will," he said, wrapping an arm around her. "Don't cry, Molly. You might get yourself sick again. I'm sure if we just...explain..." But how did one explain something like this? How did one explain that they had been a pokemon the night before? "I promise," he said, taking her hand and giving her a squeeze. "He won't send me away. You're still my trainer, and I love you."
"Papa can't send you away...he just can't. You're my best friend...my only friend...I'll be so lonely again without you." her arms wrapped around Jacen and she hugged him as tightly as she was able to, realizing her hands were on bare skin. He would need clothes! Still she was hugging him tightly and sniffling and about that time her door swung open and her fathers deep "Molly, you awake sweetheart?" could be heard. He'd said the same thing every morning since she'd gotten sick and only occasionally got an answer.
So he was more than a little stunned to be greeted by a naked child's butt...who was apparently hugging his daughter! What the hell! "Who are you!? What are you doing in my daughters room? How dare you barge in here, and with no clothes on! Get out! Frost!"
Meanwhile Molly was looking over Jacen's shoulder wide eyed, towards her fathers voice. "Papa! No! No! Don't send him away papa you can't!" "Molly I..." "No papa! You don't understand...this is Frost...'cept his names really Jacen...mama sent him a star last night...and how he's like me!"
Molly's dad stared at him closely. "You know...I can see how he looks like a Vanillite...but...this kid thing. I don't understand..." he shook his head. "Alright let me get you clothes and the two of you some food...you're okay Molly?" "Of course papa! I'm a little achy, and wet...but I have Jacen here with me. I'll always be okay with him with me!" "Well...alright. He can stay." "Ohhh thank you papa! You were right Jacen you can stay!"

Molly’s Sweet Sixteen What happens when an unexpected addition to Molly’s birthday gives her an even more unexpected birthday gift? (This is a future-au!)
It was her birthday! Molly had turned 16 today and had convinced her dad to go on a picnic with her and Jacen. There was a warm feeling in her stomach as she thought of the Vanillite teen who had been with her for years at this point. It was hard to believe sometimes he'd started off as a little Pokemon and grown up with her!
They'd grown close....so close...with his help she'd begun to experience more of the world, but always she preferred his company to anyone else's, and while she finally had other friends...he was still her best friend. Her first friend. Her boyfriend. The word made her warm again, a low laugh causing her father to look at her oddly as they walked her hand holding Jacen's. She almost never used her cane anymore if he was around though she always had it with her.
It was amazing what having a friend had done for her. She'd started growing stronger, less sickly. She managed to gain some weight, and even began to look her proper age as she grew up. So here they were on this perfect Autumn day, she wearing just a light sweater over her shirt and some jeans waiting while her father spread out the blanket for them.
"Alright you two, I have food, and cake for after...and presents!" Molly grinned and clapped. Her father had taken to Jacen's change better than expected and allowed him to stay for his daughters benefit. He looked more human than Pokemon, so them dating while strange...was not hard to handle.
"Tell me about the trees Jacen! I can feel the wind...and hear the leaves rustling...are they changing colors like you said they do?"
"The trees are turning yellow and orange," Jacen said, smiling at his girlfriend. It was a strange thought, he supposed. Some small part of him still considered Molly his trainer; but by now he'd learned that as he was no longer a pokemon, he was free to do what he wished. And he wished to stay by Molly's side. "I wish you could see them," he said. "They're beautiful today, Molly. The sun is shining through them, and there's a light breeze. Almost like they're dancing for you." However much he wished Molly could see, it never happened. He'd hoped, that one day, he would be able to find another star that could heal her eyesight. She would be able to see the world around her--and more importantly, for Jacen, be able to see him. He pressed a small box into her hand, and leaned forward to whisper into her ear. "Happy Birthday, Molly," he said. "It's a present. I thought maybe we could... go find you another pokemon, after our picnic. Not with that pokeball, though..." He grinned, taking a necklace out of the box. He moved behind her to put it on. "It's a pokeball, Molly. But with red gems and diamonds. I don't know what the black stone is... I love you, Molly."
"Yellow and orange...you told me yellow is a bright color...and orange is a little darker and warmer...they look like the sun feels..." she held her hand to the sunlight she could feel filtering down face tilting up at what she couldn't see a smile on her face. "I can see them Jacen.....you've described things so well for me, I can see them through your words." she'd long ago accepted she wouldn't ever see though she did wish deeply that she could see Jacen...just once.
Her fingers curled around the box feeling it under her fingers, listening to the sound it made as it opened up...the soft squeak of the tiny hinge, and once she felt him putting a necklace on her she let it clack shut, marveling at the sound. Nothing sounded quite like a necklace box...that neat clack sound it made! She looked up at him able to feel his breath on her face to know where to look, and gave him a sweet smile. "That could be fun I think." her fingers flew up to her neck and she brushed them over the necklace. "Oh Jacen...I love you too!"
His name was breathed softly, and she turned to her dad. "Papa look what Jacen gave me! Isn't it just perfect?" "It's beautiful Molly. I think the black stone is onyx Jacen." he smiled at the teen boy. "Why don't you two eat a little and have some cake, then you can go for the walk I know Molly is itching to take."
There was an unembarrassed laugh from her and she nodded and began to carefully eat the picnic lunch enjoying the peanut butter and jelly. Sure it was a "kiddy" sandwich but she absolutely loved them still and her dad knew that. It was rounded off with some fruits, a few raw veggies...and finally a slice of spice cake her favorite.
"I'll wait here and finish my cake. Enjoy the walk." "Okay dad!" Molly grinned and set her things aside after wiping her hands and mouth. Her stick was picked up and she slipped it into her jean pocket, more than glad the thing was collapsible. "Ready Jacen?"
"Onyx?" Jacen repeated, looking to Molly's father. When the vanilite boy had first changed, he had been alarmed. He had thought maybe he would throw him out--but he had hoped, oh he had hoped the man would see that he was still Molly's vanilite. He had been relieved when the man had accepted him into his family, and even more so as he grew up with Molly. He viewed the man as his father, almost, but he daren't say that aloud. It would be too embarassing. He flashed the man a bright smile. "Oh. It's onyx, Molly," he said. "It's shiny black." He happily joined in the eating. Though he had been with Molly for several years now, the boy still remembered those long months living in the forest with very little to eat. He appreciated the little things, the things Molly's father provided him. "I'm ready," Jacen said, smiling at Molly. He took her hand, and led her into the nearby field. "Let's try to catch one," he said. "Maybe we'll find a legendary."
"Yeah onyx, not quite like the Pokemon though." Molly's dad chuckled softly at the expression on Jacen's face. He patted Jacen on the shoulder. "You take care on that walk now you hear me son?" that was a first. Referring to Jacen as son. But he'd pretty much raised him from kid to now, he felt like a son...or maybe son in law despite it not being to that point between Jacen and Molly. Still he was smiling kindly at Jacen a hand resting on his arm.
Molly took Jacen's hand and gracefully pulled herself up holding tightly to his hand. She still carried a little bag full of various things. A book, various pokeballs, poffins...so she was always prepared...and couldn't help laugh though. "A legendary? I doubt we'll be that lucky but it could be neat!"
The drying grass made a ssssshhh sound against her pants, a whispering noise though her steps managed to set a bunch of butterfree reeling into the sky. Not that she could see them, though she heard a rush of wings. "Oh...I hear something...what is it Jacen?" she knew he'd describe it to her, her face lit up with wonder as she stared off in the wrong direction.
That was a first. Being called son by Molly's father--it was...nice. He flashed the man a bright smile. It was true; the man had raised him, since he was a pokemon. He didn't think he had been very old when Molly had caught him. His obsession with poffins told him that. He had been too interested in sweets and toys to have been very old. "We will," he promised. "We'll be careful. We're just going to the field--" he pointed. "Not too far, though." He didn't want Molly getting tired. "Yes, maybe a legendary," he said. "Like you, Molly. There's only one of you. So you're the most legendary of them all." He tapped her nose playfully. "Oh, butterfree!" he exclaimed, looking up at them. "They're beautiful, Molly." He was always in awe of how well her hearing was. She heard things he wouldn't notice without her mentioning them. He did catch the sound of footsteps approaching, and stiffened. "Molly, take your pokeball out," he instructed. "I think there's one coming our way." He was disappointed. It was just a boy. A teenager, his age, with green curly hair. Jacen hesitated for a long moment. "Molly, it's a celebi," he said. "Throw your pokeball at him carefully. Maybe he'll grant you a wish!" And so what if he confused Jirachi with Celebi?
Colby gave Jacen a warm smile and an understanding nod at his words and cleaned up from their picnic mess a little, helping himself to a little bit more cake, there was plenty after all!
Oh how Molly blushed at his words but her eyes, they shone so brightly! There was a giggle at the nose tap though and she wiggled it at him. Of course she heard things he didn't. His eyes worked. Her ears had to compensate for what she couldn't see. Her nose did the same, as did her sense of touch. They'd grown heightened to help her.
She also felt Jacen stiffen and she wondered if there was some danger coming towards them. Her pokeball was pulled out at the ready though...until he said it was a Celebi. That changed everything! She put that one away and quickly fished out another, the master ball held in her hand tightly and she listened intently. "This way Jacen?" she was a little off...would be throwing a little too far to the left without some correction.....which once done the ball would be thrown. A Celebi!
Brenny was about to protest, about to explain that he couldn't be caught even by a masterball, when he noticed Jacen put a finger to his lips and gesture for him to play along. He hesitated for a moment longer--couldn't she see that he wasn't a celebi anymore? And that was when realization struck. This girl couldn't see. "Bibi!" he attempted to mimic the sounds he had made as a pokemon. He felt bad for decieving the girl, but it was his job, he felt, to make everyone he met happy. "He's just to the right--yeah," Jacen guided Molly's hand carefully. "Right. There. Now try!" He beamed at her. "I'm sure he'll grant you a wish, Molly," he said encouragingly. "Do you have one in mind?"
"There's only one thing I could ever wish for Jacen...but it's the one thing I can't be given....to be able to see your face...and papa's face...at least once...I wouldn't have to see anything else in the world....just your faces...and I could happily continue being blind." well if that wasn't just the sweetest and yet saddest of things really.
The ball of course bounced harmlessly off Brenny, and did nothing. She heard it thunk...and fall and...nothing. She frowned a moment. "I guess I missed the Celebi. Oh well, I couldn't have kept it anyhow. I would have set it free again...but to say I caught a legendary..." she laughed softly and shrugged and started to walk in the direction she'd thrown the ball to retrieve it,.
She was midway between Jacen and Brenny when she tripped and fell, a startled cry coming from her as she put her hands out to catch herself as she landed. With a sigh she pushed herself up. "I'm okay Jacen!" well she was. Her hands were wiped off on her pants. "Now...where...is it..." she was feeling carefully with her foot, hoping to kick it.
"No, you caught him, Molly!" Jacen assured her picking up the masterball and handing it to her. "You caught him! Now let him out, and maybe he'll grant your wish." Oh, he hoped the celebi could. Couldn't celebis granty wishes? Or was that jirachis? Brenny went still for a moment, and when Molly 'let him out' of the masterball, he reached over to her. He placed a hand on her forehead. "Close your eyes," he instructed. He would let her see what he was seeing. He would grant her wish--it was the least he could do. Especially if something so small--something that was clearly the most important thing to her--would make her happy. "Your wish is to see Jacen and your father?" he asked. "I can only give you sight for a short time... An hour at most. But I can try again another time, too..." He'd never had to share sight with anyone before. It would be a new experience. "Open your eyes, Molly."
"I caught the Celebi? Really?" oh how wide her eyes went as the masterball was handed to her and she held it out. "Come out Celebi!" She was amazed she'd actually caught it!
The hand on her forehead surprised her...it wasn't a cold touch like Jacen...who was touching her?! But Jacen wasn't upset or worried so it had to be okay. "Okay....?" she closed her eyes wondering why she had to...it made no difference really.
But oh how she listened to that unfamiliar voice and nodded her head. "That's the only wish I've ever had. To see Jacen and papa...wait...you...I...?" oh how stunned she was. This was a joke...a cruel joke...it had to be!
Except when she opened her eyes...oh how her eyes winced...her hand raising to shield her eyes long lashes low, protecting her eyes as she tried to make sense of things. A few seconds later and her vision cleared and she blinked a few times.
"Oh....OH!" she felt tears welling up and it blurred her vision and she hastily scrubbed at her eyes to clear them turning suddenly. "Jacen?!" She saw him then standing there...and her eyes widened. "Oh Jacen...you're so handsome!" she was laughing, and there were tears again as she closed the short gap between them and hugged him tightly, kissing him.
Then she turned finally to find the Celebi. "Oh thank you Celebi!"
Jacen wrapped his arms around her waist, smiling at her. "Your wish came true," he said, leaning to whisper in her ear. "I knew it would, one day." He had hoped she would be able to see him. It almost brought tears to his eyes, the fact that his girlfriend was seeing him for the very first time. He returned her kiss. "I love you, Molly," he said. "Let's go show your Papa." He took her hand, and began to lead her to him. He grinned. "Let's race," he suggested. "Come on." He let her hand go. "Just follow me, if you have any trouble. But he's right there--see him? Sitting on the blanket, where we left him. I bet he's still eating cake." "Cake?" Brenny asked, blinking. "It's Molly's birthday," Jacen said, smiling at Brenny gratefully. "And you've made her wish come true. Molly, do you want to tell your Papa you caught a celebi, or do you want to let him go?"
"You had better faith than I did Jacen." she gave him the brightest smile, hugging him tightly, tearing up again. Oh it was amazing to see him! She nodded her head a bright grin on her face. "Racing sounds like fun!" she turned to Brenny and hugged him tightly. "You can go free Celebi...but if you want some cake, we have lots and you can come with us for a piece before you go!"
She looked to Jacen then. "It's not right to keep him. I bet someone would miss him a lot if I did and besides...he's given me sight for an hour. I can't keep him." no way! She beamed and took Jacen's hands watching her fingers mesh with his. She'd remember that forever. "Lets run!"
Molly started then giggling as she ran and could see her father sitting there. "Paaapaaa....daaaad!" "Molly slow down you're going to get hurt! Jacen!" of course he was worried watching her run like that, and in the lead! It wasn't until they reached him and she flung herself at him. "Oh papa, I can see you! It's only for an hour....but I can see!" she was laughing again and her father blinked looking to Jacen as tears filled his own eyes. "How...?"
Brenny returned the hug with a bright smile. "I do like cake," he mused aloud, before grinning. "I think I'll join you. You can tell your Papa all about catching me. He followed the two at a slower pace, not wanting to startle her father. What if her father wanted him to make it so she could see forever? He didn't know how to do that. He wasn't sure it was possible. "I'm sure someone would," Jacen agreed with a nod. "Maybe he has his own papa waiting for him at home." He chased after Molly, beaming. This was fun! He wished this could last forever. It was unfortunate that the celebi couldn't do more. He looked to Colby. "A wish was granted," he said, glancing back towards the field. "Molly caught a celebi."
"A Celebi?" Colby looked around in surprise and saw Brenny walking towards him, a warm smile on his face as he suddenly hugged the teen. "Thank you for giving her sight for an hour...this is probably the most memorable birthday she'll ever have. Please, sit. We have plenty of stuff in our basket."
"Cake papa! He'd like some cake." "Cake it is!" he started to dig it out, then blinked a moment and pulled out his wallet and removed an old picture. It was the one and only photo of Molly and her mother, taken minutes before her mother had given into the injuries after her emergency delivery. "Ohhh...it's me and mama...you were right Jacen...she is an angel..." she looked almost exactly like Molly did, save Molly got her fathers cheekbones and a few other things. she turned to Brenny then. "Thank you for making this the best birthday ever! I'm Molly, this is Jacen and my papa.."
Brenny was puzzled at the hug, but returned it with a smile. "Oh... You're welcome," he said awkwardly. "I wish I could make it last. If anyone deserves to see the wonders of this world--it's her." He sat down on the blanket as instructed, blinking at the man's kindness. He didn't seem unhappy that Molly's sight couldn't last longer...How unexpected. "I know Jacen," he said at last. "But I don't know if he remembers me. I was a lot smaller then," he demonstrated by holding up his hands in aproximate size of a celebi. "He was wandering the woods after his trainer abandoned him, so I helped him find some berries before everything froze over. Then I found my father, so--" he hesitated, before glancing at Jacen. "Looks like he found himself a good family, though," he said with a smile.
Colby wasn't unreasonable and knew her sight couldn't last. If she said an hour, then an hour it was. Brenny was given some cake and he settled on the blanket too as Molly settled next to Jacen leaning against him, looking around in wonder and asking some questions. But he'd taught her so much. Grass was green, the sky was blue...things like that. Her eyes though kept returning to him and her father and she even looked down at her new necklace.
"Jacen found me when I was ten...I had no friends...I was picked on for being blind. But Jacen...he was my best friend and protected me...and when I got sick...he took care of me then too...it's funny. When I woke up from being sick he'd changed and I thought I'd died..." she looked up to Jacen. "I was right though...you are an angel. My angel."
Brenny, for the most part, ate his cake in silence. He nodded to show he understood Molly's words, but he felt awkward about it. He didn't feel as if he should be sharing this special moment with them. It was their moment. It was something special for them. "I'm not an angel," Jacen pulled away from Molly, his words coming out more harshly than he'd intended. "Molly, I'm not. I'm just--" If he was an angel, especially Molly's angel, he would have traded eyes with her in an instant. An angel could do those sorts of things... They were magical. He shook his head at her. "I protected you and took care of you... Because you were my trainer." It wasn't fair that Molly had to be blind! It wasn't! The vanilite teen took off into the field without saying another word.
Oh....oh that stung...he'd never been so harsh towards her before! ...and...was that the only reason he took care of her? Because she was his trainer? tears stung her eyes as he took off, and she gasped softly, feeling like her heart had just broken. Had...he just broken up with her? It's what it felt like.
Colby sat there looking at Molly and then looking after Jacen. "Molly stay here. I'll go get him." she couldn't answer, just nodded her head miserably. So much for it being a good birthday. She gave Brenny a sad smile. "Maybe you should take your present back..." her words a soft whisper. Seems her being able to see suddenly had caused a lot of trouble. It wasn't worth it to see. She'd seen enough...saw the harsh look to match the harsh tone on Jacen's face. It made her cry harder. She wished she'd never seen such an ugly look on his face. She'd never forget it!
Colby ran after Jacen catching up quickly what with the advantage of long legs and he came up behind the teen, and reached out grabbing at his arm. "Jacen, wait! Come back please...I know how you feel. I've felt like this from the moment she was born. Why Molly? Why not me? Why couldn't I be the one blind?"
"No," Brenny said, with a shake of his head. He looked up from his piece of cake and gave her a gentle smile. "I think he loves you so much that he doesn't want this hour to end. Sometimes when people love each other very much, they don't know what to do when the other person is hurt." He had experience with that. His one time pet, Mei, and his second pet, Eliot, had recently gotten together. They had taken turns rescuing each other, it seemed. Eliot had saved Mei from drowning, Mei had saved Eliot from going belly up in the lake. "Sometimes... Well. Sometimes it's hard. If my dad ever got hurt, I think I'd want to switch places with him. He's very special to me. I think that must be how Jacen feels now."
He took another bite of cake and fell silent.
Jacen turned and wrapped his arms around Colby, shoulders shaking. "I hate it," he muttered, words muffled by the older man's shirt. "I've always hated it. Ever since I scared those bullies away. They're the ones who deserve to be blind. She's so wonderful... And I can't do anything about it. All I did was make it worse! That wish! All it's doing is showing her, for an hour, what she can never have again!" The vanilite teen clutched at Colby's shirt tightly. He fell silent, except for the ocassional sniffle.
Molly looked up at Brenny with a soft sniffle and scrubbed at her eyes. "Y...you think thats it? That it's because he loves me he's so upset...and not because he doesn't?" well...it had felt like he'd said he only took care of her due to being his trainer... "Your right.....if papa or Jacen got hurt, I'd want to trade places with them so they were okay." she gave him a soft smile. "You're so smart." Colby hugged Jacen tightly and let the teen cry. He understood, really he did. "Jacen...son...you've given Molly something so special...so special. All her life all she said she wanted was to see my face just once...then as she got older she said our faces. You gave her that. Even if only for an hour you gave her the only wish she's ever had and knew she could never have. She is wonderful, and so are you. I'm glad you found her all those years ago. Ever since that day when I discovered you'd changed...I've been so glad for that. You always cared about her. I knew she was in good hands with you. I'm proud to call you son. Now...lets go back...she's only got a little time left. You don't want her miss out on seeing your face with the time she has left do you?"
"...But you never said any of that," Jacen said, blinking up at Colby. He couldn't remember the man ever saying he was glad to have him around--and he certainly hadn't called him son before today. "And you...certainly didn't seem to appreciate when I changed," he said, shaking his head with a small, sad sort of smile. "I couldn't understand why you were so upset that I didn't have any clothes..." This was awkward. He couldn't remember ever talking so closely with Colby. It was kind of nice. "I want her to see so much more than our faces... Dad." He took the man's hand and went back to their blanket. He was silent for a long moment.
"I'm sorry, Molly. I didn't mean to make you upset."
"I know and I'm sorry...I forgot that you'd need to hear those things too. I wasn't a very good dad to you was I...and I was surprised to walk into her room and have your butt practically in my face." he gave a low chuckle. "I know you do Jacen...but we'll have to take what she's been given."
Molly was sitting there staring off when they came back. She could hear their footsteps of course and only turned once Colby's hand rested on her shoulder...but she was so quiet. It wasn't until Jacen spoke that she shifted...and merely hugged him tightly. "It's okay Jacen, I understand." she gave him a soft smile.
"Please don't be sad about this okay? I got what I'd wished for, for years...I got to see papa...and you. I'll never forget how the two of you look." she turned to Brenny. "Thank you...for everything." the vision...the words of wisdom....
She looked to her dad, staring hard at him, eyes studying...to remember. "I love you papa." "I love you too Molly." her time was almost up and she turned back to Jacen then, her eyes doing the same. Studying him...his face...then up to his eyes. "I love you Jacen...." she blinked and opened her eyes, it was already getting dim again...she stared at him another long moment....before another blink. It took only one more...and that was it. She couldn't see him anymore...not with her eyes. But that was okay.
It was okay, really, that Colby had never thought that he would have needed a father, too. Molly had needed him more. And his change had been a surprise. It hadn't been a wanted thing, or an expected thing, like Molly's arrival must have been. Jacen understood that. He always had. He had ocassionally been envious of the attention Molly received from her father--he'd been a child too, but one with responsibility. He was there to take care of Molly.
That was what a pokemon was supposed to do, wasn't it? Take care of their trainers?
"I can't help but be sad about it," he muttered. He'd wanted her to have more time with her sight. A chance to see everything there was to see--and more. "I love you too, Molly." So much. If only he had been a psychic type, instead of an ice type. Then...then he would've been able to help Molly all the time.
Colby....well he felt remarkably guilty...not about Molly...but Jacen. He'd seriously dropped the ball where he was concerned and hadn't treated him very well. Had treated him like a pokemon, not a child. Oh sure he'd clothed him, fed him gotten him toys and things...but there was no father-son bonding like there should have been. Colby wished he could go back in time and fix that.
Molly patted Jacen's cheek gently. "I know why you're sad...but it's okay. Really it is." she felt tired after such an emotional hour and couldn't help a soft yawn. Colby turned to Brenny. "I'm sorry about the upset here...thank you again for your gift to her." he patted the Celebi teen on the arm gently.

If I Could Turn Back Time [size9](What happens when you get the chance to go back in time and make things right?)
Colby sighed softly as he watched his daughter and Jacen get up and he shook his head. "I really wish I could go back in time...and do things right by Jacen...treat him like a son...like I should have..." the words were low, to himself as he packed up the picnic stuff with a heavy heart.
Brenny paused for a long moment, and then turned around. "You wish to go back in time?" he asked. "I can do that." He took the man's hand. "I'm a celebi, sir. I'm the guardian of the forest, and celebi have the ability to travel through time. If that's truly your wish..."
To say that Colby was surprised...was a total understatement. He blinked at Brenny...then looked at the two walking ahead together and nodded. "I didn't do right by Jacen...I didn't treat him like a son like I should have...but like a pokemon...I want to fix that...its not right I ignored him for Molly." he took a deep breath. "That is truly my wish."
Brenny nodded in understanding--though he didn't quite understand where Colby was coming for, really. "She's blind, of course she would need more care," he said. "I will take you back to the time he transformed." He took Colby's hand--and in a moment and a rush of light, they were in Molly's room. The small girl was asleep on her bed, her fever having broken--it was still dark outside, judging by her window. "I don't see Jacen," Brenny muttered, frowning in concern. "But I'm sure this is the right time..."
Colby smiled as he recalled this day....Jacen and Molly had explained it all to him. "He's under her bed...he said he saw a shiny star and thought it was medicine that would make her better." he crossed to the bed and knelt down carefully drawing Jacen out and wrapping a blanket around him. He looked up to Brenny. "Thank you...for letting me have a second chance. She does need more care...but not to the point of excluding him from my love...to not treat him like a son was inexcuseable."
"I'll keep that in mind thank you." he hadn't caught the Celebi's name...and that was okay. He instead sat in the rocking chair in Molly's room still holding Jacen close humming softly under his breath. Molly was sleeping peacefully. So Jacen got the attention he needed instead. "I promise to do the right thing this time son...to love you like you should have been all these years."
As if Jacen heard those words, the small boy began to stir. He blinked up at Colby for a long moment. Was he sick? Colby had never made any attempt to hold him before... Why was he wrapped up in a blanket? What was--he opened his mouth to inquire as to what was going on, before he remembered the human couldn't understand him. He sighed. "What--?" the vanilte broke off, putting a hand to his mouth. That wasn't his voice! And that certainly wasn't his hand! What'd happened to him? He clung to Colby, then, focusing on the one thing he could see that had stayed the same. Molly's dad.
"Do you remember finding something really shiny under Molly's bed earlier? It was sent to you to find...so you could grow up big and strong and be my son and Molly's brother. You're more human than pokemon now I think but I'm really not sure. You have your markings still...but you look like a six or seven year old boy. My boy." he hugged Jacen gently. "I love you Jacen."
"...I--I thought it was medicine. From the angels..." Molly had spoken of angels. How her Momma was one. "I thought it'd fix Molly..." The vanilite boy hesitated, blinking up at Colby. What had changed? The man had never seemed too interested in him, before. He'd brought poffins, and food--and he'd even helped Molly make a bed for him, but Jacen couldn't remember anything like this. "You... You know my name?" he asked, blinking up at him.
"Molly is okay now. Her fever broke. She's resting quietly for now. I came in and found you under the bed. I'm sorry I haven't paid much attention to you till now. Molly was very possessive. You were her pokemon...but now that you're a little boy...well now you'll be my son, and her brother alright?" he brushed his fingers through Jace's messy hair with a smile. "You were mumbling in your sleep...saying your name was Jacen not Frost." a white lie. It was easier than explaining time travel with a Celebi.
Oh. So Molly had kept her dad from giving him attention; that made sense. "It's alright. Molly needs you more," the boy said, leaning against Colby. "She needs you a lot more. But I took care of her. I did. I promise... I tried to fix her." The vanilite seemed to be fading in and out of consciousness. Being held like this was nice. It was warm, and special. "Son?" he echoed. "Brother? Okay." He leaned his head against Colby's chest. "That's right. I'm Jacen, not Frost..." he yawned. "I love you, too, Molly's papa."
"You both need me Jace, and you'll both have me. You'll have your own room and a real bed, and toys. We'll spend time together you and I and all of us as a family." he smiled and hugged the boy closer still rocking him gently. "You can call me papa too Jacen, go ahead and sleep son." his words gentle, loving. Yes, this had been the right choice.
Jacen gave Colby a sleepy smile. "I love you, Daddy..." the boy muttered, curling up onto the man's lap. Soon, deep peaceful breaths--albeit cold ones, began to escape the vanilite. Colby had come just in time to sooth the boy's fears.
Colby sat there in the chair for the rest of the night holding Jacen close to himself, rocking in the chair and watching both him and Molly. When Molly began to stir, he shifted carefully trying not to wake Jacen and moved towards the bed still holding him, and brushed his hand over Molly's hair. "You're awake...your fever broke." "Papa.." his name a soft sigh a smile on her face. "Where's Frost papa?" "He's here with me Molly. But I have something to tell you." "Okay..." she sounded scared and who could blame her. "Frost has changed a little. His name is actually Jacen...and he looks like a little boy now. He's your little brother now. I'm going to take care of both of you. My daughter...and my son." "I have a brother now?" she grinned. "Okay...I can always catch a new pokemon...but I like having a brother!" she seemed in high spirits. "I'm going to lay him down with you. He's still sleeping." "Okay papa, I'll stay with my little brother."
As Jacen was laid down onto the bed, he began to stir. "Nnn..." he complained, instinctively moving towards Molly. He was smaller than she was, but the sleepy vanilite didn't seem to mind that. That was how it'd always been. He'd caught the words 'little brother', while still half asleep, and opened an eye to peer up at her. "Molly? You're okay?"
Molly was laying on her side facing Jacen, her eyes open and staring off but she smiled and her eyes moved towards him. "I'm okay Jacen...papa told me your real name...and that you look a little different now...and that now you're my little brother!" she beamed at this. She'd always wanted a brother or sister!
Jacen still wasn't sure how to react to the knowledge that he was now Molly's brother. He was a pokemon, wasn't he? She was his trainer, wasn't she? How could--how could a pokemon be a human's brother? And why had Colby taken sudden interest in him, anyway? Was it just because he'd changed? "...Yeah," he said aloud. "Yeah. I guess I am."
Colby came in about that time. "I found some clothes you can wear Jacen...and later we'll get you a room set up. I know it'll be different for you...but if you look you have hands and feet much like mine and Molly's now...you seem more human." Molly shifted reached for her water trying to locate it and failing. "I shoulda let papa spend more time with you...I was selfish, I'm sorry Jacen." oh the frown on her lips as she said that. It was true...she'd been bratty about it in a way. "You kids hungry?"
Oh the look of surprise on both Molly and Colby's faces then. Jacen thought he wasn't liked? Molly's eyes welled up with tears and she sniffled softly. "All my fault you thought papa didn't like you...I'm sorry...I'm a bad girl..." she rolled away then and drew her blanket over her head with a sob. Her emotions were frail after being so sick...and so to realize she'd made her best friend think her dad hated him?! Oh that was terrible to her little heart and mind! "I'm sorry you felt that way Jacen. It's so far from the truth it's not even funny." Molly sobbing though had him crossing the room and he reached out to comfort her. "Molly...honey it's okay..." "No it's not! It's all my fault! I'm bad!]/i] I'm a bad girl! Bad girls don't get toys...or hugs...or..." she was sobbing again as she pushed her few toys off her bed with a heart broken cry punishing herself. "Bad girls don't get company and are grounded to their room by themselves." her pillow was pulled over her head for emphasis. She was bad. She didn't deserve having her papa or Jacen in there just yet.
"No, it's not your fault..." Jacen began awkwardly. It'd just always seemed like Colby was doing something else. Or that he was busy with Molly. "It's not your fault! Okay? Stop crying!" The vanilite boy moved from Molly's bed and ran to Colby's side. He wrapped his arms around him and started to cry as well. "I made Molly cry!" he cried. He buried his face into Colby's shirt. "I don't know how to fix her. There's no shiny medicine this time."
Colby picked the boy up and hugged him close. "It's okay Jacen...she's a little upset. She'll be okay in a few minutes." he hugged the boy and pressed a light kiss to the top of his head. "I'm sorry for making you think I didn't like you. You won't feel that way again I hope." he moved to sit on the edge of Molly's bed, and gently pulled her against him with his free arm and hugged her with one while hugging Jacen with the other. "It's okay kids. I love you both okay? Now, Molly sweetheart dry your eyes. It's all okay now." "Really papa?" "Really. Right Jace?"
"It's okay now," Jacen echoed, leaning against Colby. "He likes me, see, Molly? I know he likes me now." He must have, to have stayed up with him. And it had been Colby to comfort him when he'd been scared last night. "Don't cry anymore, Molly. I don't like it." He frowned at her. "It's noisy."
Molly sniffled and hiccuped, wiping her eyes on her fathers shirt, but she wasn't sobbing anymore. Instead it was just a soft "Sorry Jacen..." and she pulled away from her father to lay back down. "I'm a little sleepy still...can I eat later?" "Sure Molly. We'll come check on you in awhile." "Okay papa." she sniffled again, eyes red and swollen from the crying she'd done, and she closed her eyes as she curled on herself. "Come on son lets get you dressed and some breakfast while Molly rests..."
Jacen took Colby's hand. "I don't walk like you," he said suddenly. "I bounce. But I'm not--I'm not me anymore... So I can't bounce." This was difficult to comprehend. He wasn't a pokemon. He wasn't human. What was he? "Molly will get better, won't she? I don't like it when she cries. That makes me cry. It's very sad." He frowned up at his new father. "Can you make her not do it?"
"You'll get used to walking in time Jacen...you might be bouncing just because you're so used to it." he smiled and stepped into an extra room that they kept spare clothes in. He had a nephew about Jacen's age but he moved away some time back due to his brother in law getting a job somewhere else. "Here...try these. As for Molly...she'll stop crying soon. She's going to be easily upset while she finishes getting over being sick...but no I can't make her not cry. Crying is perfectly natural son."
"What do I do with these?" Jacen asked, blinking as he held up the clothes Colby handed him. He began to pull the pants onto his head. "Like this?" he asked. "It's a very strange hat. I don't think I like it." He took the pants off, frowning at them. "Oooh. They look like what you're wearing on your legs!" At least the vanilite seemed like he would be able to adjust. He started to tug the pants onto his legs--and ended up with both in the same leg hole. "...Is this wrong? It feels wrong."
Colby chuckled and held out the underwear. "First the underwear. See the picture here? This goes at the back. This leg into this hole...and this leg here...good." he pulled those up and held up the pants. "Now...the shiny part here goes in front. This leg here...and this leg here..." he waited for Jacen to do that and pulled them up explaining how to do that. "Now your shirt. Your head goes here...and your arms here and here." he pulled it down and smiled. "There...now you're all dressed. There's a lot to teach you...like bathrooms..." he chuckled. "And how to get to one in time to not have accidents in your clothes."
Bathrooms? Accidents? But couldn't he go outside, just as he always had? He blinked up at Colby in confusion. "You'll teach me everything, won't you?" he asked. "You will, won't you?" He felt somewhat awkward in his new clothes, but he knew, over time he'd adjust. He wrapped his arms around Colby. "You really want to be my Papa, just like Molly?" he asked. "But she needs you more. I can help take care of her."
"I promise to teach you everything Jacen. There's a lot thats different now that you look like you do." he smiled gently at the Vanillite boy. "And yes, I want to be your papa very much. Just like I'm Molly's papa yes." he hugged the boy and smiled. "You both need me son. You can still help me, but I'm going to take care of you both, I promise."
