"Um..." Kerra wondered whether this would prove to be a mistake. But he really didn't have any other choice, what with being pinned to the ground and interrogated as if he were a bad lion - which he wasn't. Honest. It had been an accident. "To be a guard."

Nuraya gave a silent sigh and rolled her eyes. Uh oh. They were talking about future things again. Couldn't they just play the game and forget about all the serious grown-up stuff again. Feeling a little bit left out she took a step back off of Kerra's tail tuft and gave it a tug with her teeth as if to draw their attention back to the game.

"And no one specifically yet." He made a pleading sort of face. "Still trying to find someone." He'd only just started looking to 'recruit' for a couple of days and so far he'd not had much luck.

A full-grown Firekin couldn’t have hoped to look more contemplative. Shula was a rapt listener as he indulged her curiosity. When Kerra was finished, she released him. As her paws hit the sand, she said, “Of course a guard.” That was good news. Shula wouldn’t mind keeping him around long-term even if he was a clumsy oaf who liked to destroy her stuff. To be honest, um… she hadn’t really made any other friends, and not for lack of trying.

“Just don’t pick Azar’bijan,” she said, sounding certain her demands would be met with vigor. This was part of why other cubs didn’t much like her. Too bossy. “Cause I picked him and I don’t want him distracted by you.” And selfish. “Besides, he won’t have time for you once I’m there.” And a jerk.

His expression flickered with a smile at her approval. So they were still friends? That was good. He liked having friends and losing them wasn't on his to-do list. It would be interesting to see how well such a social feline did out on the borders where the closest guard would be a good sprint away. Thankfully, there would be a whole lot of training to get him used to that sort of solitude.

"Grandpa?" He asked immediately, ears drawing forwards. "Oh, you don't have to worry about that. I;m trying to avoid family if possible. Not that they aren't good at their jobs...I just...want to do this by myself...with an unrelated teacher (or at least a more distant relative with who, he hadn't spent any time previously).

And he smiled again. "But grandpa said yes? That's great news, Shula! I'm glad you found someone."

Beside them, Nuraya gave a very audible yawn and then - at that moment - seemed to realise her mistake. She'd come here to tell Shula it was time to come home and gotten caught up in the game instead. Oops. Now they were both going to be in trouble.

"Shula." She called out. "Mum said we have to go home." Better late than never, right?

Wait -- They were related? Shula couldn't remember if he'd ever told her or when she'd forgotten it if he had. It was such an easy thing to forget: They weren't anything alike! Azar was a beacon of all that was awesome and Kerra was... Kerra.

Shula was still wrapping her head around this when she heard her sister. Come to think of it, she was not much like Nuraya. And her father, who tried to coax his daughters to be something feminine and manipulative... She was not like that either.

Was she the Kerra of her family?

Oh, no!

"Alright, Nur." Shula gave her one and only friend a final word of advice, serious business face and all: "Look harder, but don't pick a loser."

With that, it was off to her den before they got in too much trouble.

Kerra certainly seemed to take more of his father's view on life. The more relaxed and easy-going view that made him far easier to get on with. It was perhaps only Azar's confidence that he had taken - his father being much more submissive than many Firekin and quite happy to plod along without any ambition. Kerra, at least, had a deep self-belief (though only time would tell whether this might get tamed down once he started his apprenticeship).

And, at her advice he gave a swift little nod and responded: "Yes Ma'am." Then he seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, shake himself vigorously and watch as the two sisters headed off in the direction of home.

Nuraya's piping voice was just audible as she asked: "Who's Azar'bijan?"

Kerra only smiled and scampered off to find someone else to play with.
