Coming from some linguistics and psycholinguistics background, let me assure you guys that this is an absolutely normal phenomenon. It's normal for those who are bilingual or more.
The problem isn't really your abilities it's more about the incompatibilities of the rival lexicons... sometimes there just isn't a direct translation. Some concepts don't exist in another language. But I can't really explain it any better than that without exploring connectionist models (and to explain that, would be even more confusing).
Bottom-line... it's normal... it happens to alot of people. smile

7Sapphire8Dragon9 o_O i had two people from the public coming up to me last year in the summer saying ni hao to me at the same week and they're not even chinese, but english eek That happened to me last week! xd I went into a newsagents to buy a sandwich and when I went up to the counter to pay, the indian store owner said Ni Hao in his indian accent. I didn't know what he said at first and said, "excuse me?" So he goes Ni Hao! scream And I finally realised what he was trying to say~ "yes, yes, Ni Hao, ahahah" sweatdrop [Jerk. stare I speak cantonese, fool. I'll kill you and eat your babies. Graa stressed ]

I'm chinese and I live in the US but I often think in French and my teachers might look at me strangely if I start thinking out loud >.> this is kinda stupid, but I have to translate an addition problem from english to french to chinese to english to figure it out.

@Riyoku- omg,,i know how it feels...happenes to me daily...they come up to me and say " what does ching chong mean"
sumtimes it realli bugs me when i got ppl coming up to me saying "konichiwah!" nd i'm like...do u not know that that is japanese???

Yeh, happens to me when I never notices it. 3 I always had to think for minutes.(Or way more than a long time, I never gave up finding it in my Word Bank until I crash into something. D smile When I do that, I totally forget about everything and everybody around me. Too bad a dictionary never helped. xd

Suppose if you want to ask in English, "林肯係第幾任總統?" You can't really do it. Trust me, the word '任' doesn't really exist in English.
