Rep wasn't really sad, the joy was keeping him above his usual level of irritability, he raised a brow at Melvin. "You invest a lot of effort for a guy who can't be bothered." He smirked. "Though a little bird told me that the portals are back up. So. That might help." he'd overheard two hunters talking about what they were going to do with their Christmas leave.
"You can get off this s**t heap and maybe think a little clearer. Spend a little trainee money." He had a shopping list himself that would rival Santa's list if he got half a chance to get it.
"As for the guys eh. They do include me in s**t but if this is some kind of personal special holiday or some s**t that's like an anniversary or something, I'll keep out of it."

He shrugged. "I have nothing else to do, and I don't like the idea of holidays being spent alone." Especially by himself. Holidays were times to get together, and the idea of just laying in bed all day as if it was just another day tore at him. He wouldn't allow it, and not doing something pretty much was an insult to him as if he was just that lazy.
At the mention of portals, he almost forgot that their was a way off the island that didn't involve horrible missions.
Melvin just stared a moment, stunned at this news. "We can...leave? Like really leave?" He hadn't had a day off this island since waking out of his pod to just be normal.

Rep smirked at Melvin and nodded, sometimes it was good to be the bearer of good news rather than always bad. "Aye. Well, I mean I can't speak for trainees, but I was allowed to when I was a trainee so I can't think why you wouldn't be able to man. Get some fresh non-island air, buy some s**t. Stock up on stuff."
He looked the other man over. "You could probably use it."

He couldn't help but laugh. He probably looked like hell, but the news of open portals and a day off had left him oddly giddy. Was he just high on the drugs? He wasn't sure, but it felt like a long time since he laughed, even if it was a short one.
"Yeah." He laughing stopped as he breathed out, wiping one eye under his glasses. "It will be strange to use a portal to go someplace I've never been that doesn't mean I might get mobbed by monsters. I'm looking forward to some good food."

The laughter was contagious and Rep couldn't help but join in with a throaty chuckle.
"We can go absolutely ******** anywhere. Its one of the few perks of the job. Well earned perks too. Food and shopping and whatever the hell you want to do."
He waved a hand vaguely. "Even women~"
He looked him over with a smirk as he dropped his voice. "Or men."

Melvin had already been thinking of hooking up with someone once he got off the island, but that had always been his personal business. Having Rep talk about it just had him crossing his arms and looking away. "I never should have said anything." He looked back at him. "I tell you one damn thing and I'm never going to hear the end of it." The only thing he told Rep due to his persistent nagging that he wasn't being open and now Rep was just going to town with bringing it up.
He was not happy about it.

Rep wilted at Melvin's reaction to what he'd hoped was some amicable manly conversation about drinking and whores, not entirely understanding what upset him about it.
His smile faded and he inclined his head slightly.
"I was just saying man."

He loosened his crossed hands and watched the Sun. Rep looked deflated and he was glad he saw a boundary and didn't push it. "I don't know what you wanted me to even say by bringing it up. So what if I like both and so what if I would do what any guy stuck on a rock for 4 months would do with portal leave. You'd do the same if you didn't have 2 guys in your bed, I'm sure."
He straightened the blanket on his lap again. "It's not a big deal."

"I wasn't condemning you for it." he said weakly, not sure why Melvin had reacted the way he did and trying rather feebly to figure it out. Most of his friends had been only too happy to talk about their sexual exploits and going out on the pull, to him it was casual conversation. Sex was a topic that had never bugged him, and for obvious reason. Even the comment about having two guys stung a little and he wasn't sure why.
"I was just ...talking? You said you could do things, I just figured you'd do the same things I would have done with leave. " His guard slammed back down as he shifted gear into anger, getting up off the bed. "I was only being ******** friendly. Or trying. I don't know why I bother."

Anger. There was something that was as familiar to see on Rep as his Hunter jacket, and he wasn't at all phased by it. If Rep was angry with him, he wouldn't talk to him or about much of anything. He wouldn't hit a man in the Infirmary, would he?
Then again, he's never hit me.
There were plenty of people that pissed Rep off, all of which Melvin met and seen in the Infirmary for injuries. Melvin had never been so much as punched. While grateful, he was curious as to why.
You're his friend.
Doesn't mean you wouldn't punch a friend.
Breathing out, he looked at Rep. "I don't like talking about it. If I don't want the people I hook up with gossiping about me, then I - I don't know. Feel a reason to return the favor. It doesn't even mean anything in the end, so I don't see a reason to discuss it at all."
He continued to watch Rep huff, but was now more interested in his previous observation. It almost made Rep's anger comical because it was nothing but hot air. More hot air than Melvin previously had deduced.

Rep didn't soften, he kept his arms crossed and his expression icy and distant. Sometimes he really got tired of people he tried to reach out to being so inept at reading him, anyone else would give up and go home, it wasn't really worth it.
But he wasn't a quitter.
"I don't gossip about you. I don't even ******** talk to anyone about you, I don't even think the guys know I talk to you, least not from me. I was trying to talk to you about you. Don't see why that was such a huge ******** upsetting deal, like you are embarrassed about yourself." he turned his back to the blonde man.
"And if it doesn't mean anything I don't know what the big ******** deal was about talking. If you are so ******** picky about conversations then why don't you just lead it? We can sit here and you can ask me questions and talk about what you are comfortable with and I'll just ******** answer."

Melvin would have preferred that, but before he even allowed himself to take that offer, he just had to point something to Rep. "You said I wasn't giving enough and that you didn't like when I did that. That I sounded like some stupid therapist. You were getting all up in arms that I lead the conversation and never said anything. Now you want it back the way it was? I don't know what you want in this talk that would keep you from getting pms every damn minute."
His arms crossed again, now upset to match the Sun in the room. "It doesn't mean anything so that's why there is no reason to talk about it. I'm not embarrassed about it. I just don't see the point." He shot back, tone rising. Damn Rep was a infuriating moron who didn't know what the hell he even wanted in a conversation! Every damn moment, he got upset over one thing or another.
He leaned back into his pillows, arms still crossed. "There is a million other things to talk about."

"I was being sarcastic." he snapped. "I don't like one sided conversations but its all I get. And then when you do tell me s**t its like on this..basis that you say it and then we never discuss it again. Even when we are ******** alone in a hospital room. There's no one else here."
He shook his head. "You want to keep every ******** thing so close to your chest that I bet you don't even think about anything more than you have to. I kind of feel sorry for your weapon, I bet they don't even get to share in anything you think. It must be ******** lonely in there. Trapped forever with the ice man who doesn't see the point in feelings and no way to talk to anyone else."
"But okay. I'll stop trying to talk about things. Clearly I don't know the right things. I am okay about talking about sex and s**t, it doesn't bother me, and I found it interesting. But okay lesson learned."
He dropped his accent in a terrible exaggerated version of Melvin's voice. "You just don't see the point."

He glared, finding every word prickling like hot needles. He didn't know anything about him, and here he was profiling him as if he could judge him. That he was even a bother to his own weapon. The mocking tone was childish, but it was a elementary tactic that burned back to similarities to kids back in school and hit harder then it should have.
"You're one to talk. You have as many mood-swings that they should have you admitted and then you can't deal with it so you wind up sending everyone around you into the infirmary and letting other people clean up your s**t. Running off to a cliff because you can't handle them doesn't make you any expert in telling me that just because I don't explode on people every minute means that I'm made of ice. Your weapon must be on Cloud 9 to hear you b***h and moan every second!"

Rep smiled to himself as Melvin lashed out, savouring the barbed remarks. It was so much easier when the insults were expected, it was only when he was reaching out, offering something of himself that they hurt. Every word was true, yet it didn't bother him, he knew his flaws.
He looked over his shoulder patiently. "You aren't telling me anything I don't know about myself. But you are wrong on one point. I'm not saying you should be like me, I'm just saying you give every impression you are like, scared of yourself."
"And Tracey says he's used to it by now. He used to be lonely. I shut him in the dark and left him there."
