"Well," Gabe said, happy to keep up the facade, "at home we usually use onions, sometimes some asparagus," he said. "Gotta use the right spices, too; the grilling blends do just right." He could definitely pretend that this was a totally normal conversation and they weren't quietly discussing conspiracies.

Gabe blinked. He had usually assumed that elections were elections, and that was how it went. But the idea that Presidents might be purposely bumped out of office... "You may have something there," he greed. Single-term Presidents were so rare, there had to be a reason for it, right? "Or they just started digging and that was enough." These people had to be highly-placed enough to sabotage something as easily overturned as a political campaign.

Since they were in the produce section, Tara felt obligated to pick something up. She just had no idea what to take. There were several vegetables that she didn't really like, and many more that she didn't know how to cook. Of course, she could always try doing them in foil the way they were discussing, but she wasn't really paying much attention to the suggestions, since they were just a smokescreen. "Hm. What do you think looks best here? It's hard to tell what's in season sometimes."

Digging might be enough to make someone want to replace a president. Tara drummed her fingers against the edge of her basket as she thought about it. "Maybe the ones who just leave office early are the ones who start digging but haven't found anything yet. But the ones who find something are too dangerous to let go like that, so... oh!" She smacked her basket against a display in her excitement, causing two apples to fall in. Her exclamation had been noisy, so she carefully picked up a couple more apples that had fallen, putting them back on the pile, before whispering again. "Have you heard of the Zero-Year Curse?"

Oh, shoot, now he had to say something mildly intelligent about produce. Their cover conversation was definitely not within his usual depth, this was even more out of it. "Hmmm..." He looked, and settled on something he recognized. "Well, the broccoli looks rather good."

He had to admit, he was always a fan of watching realization dawn on someone. Connecting the dots to the Truth was a wonderful thing. "I think you're onto something." He acknowledged. "I mean, look at Watergate - wasn't that terribly convenient? A huge scandal, right after Nixon's re-election,t hat knocked him out of office..." He frowned. "Yes, I've hard of it. You don't think...."

"Really? Well, you know best." Tara dropped a cauliflower into her basket, making it clear that she was either paying zero attention to the produce conversation, or couldn't tell broccoli and cauliflower apart. In truth, it was a bit from column A, and a bit from column B. Botany was interesting. Vegetables were not.

At moments like these, Tara didn't know what she thought. She didn't like asserting that she was correct until she knew for certain. But that didn't stop her from trying to connect the dots- even when some of the dots were just specks of chocolate syrup on the roadmap of life- and it didn't stop her from allowing other people to think she was right. Everyone could draw their own conclusions. If others came to the same ones that she did, didn't that mean they were more likely to be right?

"Watergate. Yes, that's good." Tara didn't know all that much about the Watergate scandal, but it sounded like it fit in with the other evidence. "Well, I wouldn't say for sure that they're all related, but doesn't it look like it? But there haven't been any assassinations in decades. I'd say that's because they're getting better at covering things up. Besides, nowadays there are more effective ways of getting rid of someone than..." She drew her finger across her throat and nodded seriously.

Gabe opened his mouth to correct her, and then decided that putting that much effort into a conversation entirely for cover simply wasn't worth it. "Actually, I gotta say, most of the vegetables look pretty fresh." He elaborated.

Gabe had never thought of it this way before. Who would have thought that something as simple as tinfoil might be connected tot he very highest reaches of government - beyond even the President? This was absolutely something worth pursuing, and he felt utterly blessed to have run into someone with a similar ideology.

"I suspect they've moved to fluffing up scandals, rather than bullets." He said. "Less mess, less investigation...much neater all around, don't you think?" He pointed out. "Seems like a perfect solution to me. And maybe presidents who dig too deep nowadays get threatened into silence rather than scandaled into it...Hmm."

Tara looked over the produce section again, this time paying slightly more attention. "Well, I hope they'd be fresh! There's not much point otherwise, is there? We'd be better off buying them frozen or canned, but then you lose half the nutritional value." Unless the vegetables were flash-frozen, but even then it wasn't quite the same.

She added a small head of lettuce to her basket and kept walking, letting her fingers run over the tops of the vegetables. Thunder struck out of nowhere, announcing the start of a misting cycle, and she yanked her hand out of the damp bin and wiped it on her pants before continuing on.

"It's probably a combination. Scandal or threats alone wouldn't be enough to silence someone if they were truly determined. If someone didn't care what harm they did to their family, they could survive threats. If they didn't care what harm they did to their reputation, scandal wouldn't be a problem. But I don't think anyone would be able to withstand them both." She looked around again, checking the area for anyone who lingered too long next to them. Despite nobody being that close, she dropped her voice to a whisper, barely audible above the fake thunder. "With these techniques at their disposal, it's clear that money is no object. They can do anything they want to do, to anyone, without worrying about it." Which was pretty damn terrifying when she thought about it like that.
