It started with the books. Sabriel was sure of it - they appeared all of a sudden, lying around the floor, stacked up in threes and fours by his guardian's bed. Many of them were in bright, colorful colors, and they affected Chinchillie's brain every time she read them. And she read them a LOT. The girl retired early, murmuring softly to herself while leafing through the pages, and sometimes he heard crying in the middle of the night. Whatever was in those books hypnotized people. He was sure of it.

One day, the books disappeared. When Chin returned from the library she was frowning, and went straight for the Mishap in his playpen, leaning over the railing to look down at him. A letter was clutched in one hand. He looked at it with interest. Maybe he'd gotten a present or something?

Not at all. "Sabriel." Scanning the letter, as though collecting her thoughts, she then took a deep breath and plunged into the killer. "You're going to have a new brother - or sister - soon."

WHAT?!

He stared at her. Right then, the words didn't sink in all the way. The books! Chinchillie waited. "Um." she said after a while. "Okay, then. We can talk about this later?" She didn't sound too hopeful about the results. When he stayed frozen, the girl tried to smile at him, waited a bit longer, and then left. The snap of the door closing brought him to his senses.

No, damnit! He didn't want a stinking BROTHER! No, no, NO! He gave a yowl of absolute horror, clinging uselessly to the bars. He was going to be replaced and couldn't do a thing about it! Prince sat watching the scene. The white lion plushie wisely kept its silence as Sabriel ranted and raved, tails smashing hard enough to chip paint as they slapped into the playpen sides. A terse silence settled over the room when the toddler realized nobody was coming to answer the screaming, and slowly sat down, fuming.

He'd never forgive this. Never.

I can't believe it. Living in the Breedables neighborhood, you can't not know about the GMFC. A couple of months ago they sent out advertisements, including a section you could fill out if you were curious about getting an appointment or applying for a job, probably so they could get an idea of how sought after they were. I don't know. I did want an appointment there...it was too hard to get a spot, though. But the reply came back with a surprise in store. If wanted it, an appointment was waiting for me at the clinic!

My reasons for wanting this will remain private for now. For the record, all of this came before taking in Sabe - but the letter came after, and...I decided to go ahead with it after all.

Now, Sabriel takes up most of my time. He's not a nice child (actually, he's horrible) and who would want to raise a baby around him? But I got to thinking...if we could go back home for a little while, or ask Jabir to put up one of those portal things, he wouldn't have to be around the little one, or would be kept away if he turned out to be mean to them.

Listen to me. This is a little after the fact. I already went to the GMFC and filled the appointment out, but ssssshhhh. Keep it quiet. Even so, I still have lots to talk about, like being scared out of my wits and still wondering whether I did right. Sabriel looked dumbfounded when I told him. He'll probably be throwing a party right now. If I pass out from taking care of a baby, he'll get to sneak out and run around HQ all night. It's not like he'd be all that fussed about getting less attention. No, wait. He LOVES attention. Darn it.

Ever since that letter came, I've been signing out books. Some of them are very, very weird. If that's the thinking that comes from being a mom, no thank you. Some were helpful. If knowing helped you be prepared, I'd be set. Guess it's a matter of taking things as they come, huh?

Finding a place to stay, the wait, being prepared, and in the end, trying to raise a child right...they're all huge obstacles. Please, please, let it be I made the right choice in accepting - I want this so much!

And to future baby - yes, you're a raffle baby. Don't take it too hard. There's plenty worse than that, and I still think you're the best, so there.

Dear Jabir,

It'd be a great help to have a portal going back to our own house, once you have the time to do it. I'll be around most of the week. heart Sabriel's currently there, under the watch of many, MANY reliable eyes, so, with luck, Barton won't explode anytime soon. It hasn't been needed until now - well, not needed, really, but it'd be nice. Again, no pressure!

Thanks alot!
Chinchillie ^^-

P.S. If there's anything I need to do beforehand, please write back and say so? I'd hate to mess things up xd ; << obviously knows nothing about this

The puppy gazed mournfully as it was tossed into the cart. Around it, children raced with abandon, accompanied by the music of toy cars racing, marbes rolling, and Gameboys ringing around all four walls, all the way to the brightly lit ceiling. In other words, a typical toystore. Chinchillie strolled along past the stuffed animal section, taking the time to relax and enjoy herself, watching all the activity. Sabriel was...somewhere. He'd run off when they set foot inside the door. It was okay. He wasn't interested in shopping for baby stuff, and she hoped he was able to watch himself without mishap (hee), so it was all good.

"Hi! Can I help you with anything?"

She jumped back. A salesperson stood next to her, beaming cheerfully. Oh no. It was HIM again; she was thankful it wasn't 6 in the morning, or the cheer would be too much to bear. No use saying no to him, was there? Sighing, she gave in. "How about baby stuff? I want to get some other things, but it's spread all over the sto-" The man had already hurried off, forcing her to trot to catch up. He led her through another section, and another, and another. HQ was much simpler!

Along the way the cart collected a couple more items. They'd almost reached the place, when -

Crash!

An unmistakable screech rose above the normal store sounds. Chin pulled back, parking the cart where it was. "Sorry. I'll be right back." she said hurriedly, knowing she was growing pale, and dashed off toward the source of the noise. A few parents roved in that direction as well, curious to see what was happening. Reaching the source, she actually had to dodge a falling shelf that tipped over, raining stuffed panthers and leopards on her head. It confirmed her fears that Sabriel was on the loose. So much for taking care of himself!

Skipping around another fallen shelf, she cast around for the Mishap. It was hard to see the floor for plushies, and half of them were black cats, which made it almost impossible. Wait. Did that one have seven tails? It did! They must have spotted each other at the same time. Sabriel flung the panther he was clawing in her face. He turned to run...and something smacked the back of his head in return, throwing off his balance. In that pause Chin leapt forward and pinned him to the ground. One knee went to stall his whips from lashing, but those long claws and teeth were still in action if he got even a paw loose.

It felt like ages before someone came. Help arrived as a hesitant tap on the shoulder and a voice asking, "Miss?" Startled, Chin peered up to find - surprise, surprise - she had collected an audience.

With help, Sabriel stayed captured, locked tightly into one of the store's strollers (might as well add another cost to the bill, after all). They recieved the verdict while the mess was being cleaned up - 5.5k. Not counting all the baby's stuff still in the cart and the stroller. Her pockets were mournfully empty that day.

Eirwen curiously poked her beak inside the doors, hearing a commotion. Chin came storming past her, pushing a stroller. The huge bird chirped an inquiry as the shopping bags were fastened to her sides. "Don't ask." Though she was tempted to put the stroller next to the bags - let him sway in the wind and watch the ground a mile below - that wouldn't make Jabir or Maggie very happy, so she stuck Sabriel in back before mounting herself. Eirwen leapt into the air at the word to wing home.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 22, 2006 12:31 pm

Eirwen's touchdown dug ruts into the dirt, so abrupt was the signal to drop once they glided over the long stretch of green marking the Magical Mishaps headquarters. An angry squeal was Sabriel's complaint at the landing, ignored by them both. When both girl and stroller were safe on the ground, Chin paused, then turned so she could loop an arm around the feathery neck in a hug, saying silent apology at the rough treatment. Eirwen gently nipped an ear. She understood, even if she didn't understand what the problem was, and that was a comfort. The shopping bags were unhooked and set aside, freeing the bird for flight. Crooking an arm over her eyes to shield them from dust stirred up by those enormous wings, the girl watched her go longingly. To go home and actually relax - what a concept! You had to be in a sad state for that to be a daydream.

Butterflies danced well around them as the pair slowly walked back up through ankle high grass, avoiding the pocket of chilly silence. It was such a pity it was a beautiful spring day. Right now, all she focused on was not throwing Sabriel in the lake on the way past. But once in the calm of their room, all that constraint broke loose at once. Sabriel was hardly out of the woods. He was freed from the stroller, but could only sit in stiff surprise as furious accusation flew past his ears.

"DAMN it, Sabriel! Is it so much to ask that we can go somewhere and NOT get in trouble?! Six thousand and we can never go back to that place again! It's no wonder everyone hates us...we can't do anything without messing up somehow, and it's pointless to try and tell you to stop it, since you don't even care one bit...!" and so on. Sniffing, Chin scrubbed tears away, swinging suddenly from rage to despair. Sabriel appeared wary, clinging to Prince, fur bristled from the shouting. He waited until she was done ranting and had collapsed on the couch before pointing out, with typical toddler tact, "But pantahs gotta way." C'mon, he was paying for it! It looked like his life was forfeit in that moment - until she broke down crying. That was infinitely more uncomfortable. How to stop it?

With great reluctance he scrambled up on the couch next to her. Something plunked into her lap. Prince. Scooping him up, she buried her face in the plushie mane. If she knew he was being purely selfish, Chinny didn't voice it - but it showed, as normally she might have turned to Sabriel with an apology. His plan worked somewhat, deciding her that yes, she had to get out of here. No guilt plagued her for leaving him alone in there after that - in fact, she made sure to slam the door shut when she hurried to the balcony. It was only a few feet from their own room. In fact, Chin had wanted their room for that feature alone when they first arrived here. Being able to step out and have a refuge waiting was more than worth it.

A breeze greeted her at the balcony, dancing over and cooling the tracks of moisture on her face. This was a place of peace. One could sit and look out on the rosy lawn for hours without a care in the world - and she did just that, settling down in a chair pulled up with the lion still in her lap, resting chin on arms and focusing on calm. The day was a warm spring one, the view beautiful indeed, and it wasn't hard to get lost.

This was not what she had expected. It felt like only after the baby announcement Sabriel became impossible. Was he really that upset?? Or was he just up to the usual mischief? Chin bit her lip, worrying away at the problem now that there was a chance to. Her life was in an evil little cycle - being happy, being sad, fixing the problem, being happy, then the fix breaks. If only Sabriel could be sent back. A vacation would help immensely. He could go to someone's house again...no, that was a temporary solution. Way too temporary. Their house? Now that was a possibility. Darby would be mad! Darby would NOT be happy. Not only that, the ciel didn't know about a baby, which would surely be a fun experience, telling her. She was notorious for having a bad temper.

Darby would have to get over it! Chin sniffed again, but not in unhappiness. The tears had slowly faded into memory by the evening's calm. Besides, there wasn't much else she could do. Maybe feed him to King the T-Rex as a last resort. The idea made her smile a little. A little, mind, and briefly. Yet a plan had amazing power over her confidence. A couple minutes more mulling it over, she was ready to go back in. It had been late when they got back; now the sun was pulling down for the day.

Watching her mope around outside got boring pretty quickly. Sabriel'd nodded off at the balcony window. Thus the door slamming open rudely woke him up. Horrified, he froze - caught in the act! - until her first words. "Pack, Sabriel!" Her tone was a little stiff but free of anger. Where'd the yelling...the crying...?

He relaxed with caution. Girls were mysterious, all right. Still, it was an improvement, one he wasn't complaining about. The toddler only fetched Prince until she added, "To go back to the house, furball." Oh.

Carrying a pack full of everything they might want or need, Chin pulled open the portal door and took a quick look on the other side. The coast was clear. If she hesitated now, it might be possible to change her mind about going to face Darby the ciel's wrath. After one last check to make sure the room was in order, she pushed Sabriel through and shut the door behind them.

Cain curled up on the bed, a book opened over his knees. He was finding it very hard to read, however. Two people were arguing downstairs. They were talking very loudly, and every time he got into reading again, one of them broke out in a shout and interrupted. Finally, he slapped the book shut and shoved it under the bed, getting to his feet and tiptoeing to the edge of the stairs so he could hear better.

"What d'you mean you're staying? And what're you doing? I'm not DONE yet!"

"Making a sandwich." Chin rooted in the fridge some more, emerging with leftover salmon and a bag of cucumbers. Darby peeked around her elbow - yup, a monster sandwich, using most of the food in their fridge. If a curve could be seen under the girl's shirt, the ciel suspected it wasn't a baby at all, but all of those horrible sandwiches added up. "We didn't have time to get dinner or anything. What?" She took a huge bite out of one end and eyed Darby, innocently puzzled by the irritated expression. "I know you're unhappy about this...but there isn't much else to say."

Salmon and cucumbers. Sharp cheese. Mayo. Oddly enough, the combination sounded almost good, but Darby quashed that thought, since it was distracting her from the matter at hand. She rested her head on her paws, which were laid flat on the table. "There's so much that could be goin' wrong." she said fretfully. "I'm worried, kay?"

Darby wouldn't admit it unless she was really upset. For being such a grouchy creature, she had a good heart, and didn't get worked up over nothing. She leaned over to give the ciel a one armed hug, reassuringly. "Don't worry. I'm trying my best to make sure everything works out." Goodness knew it was hard enough getting this far. She was doing a good job at acting nonchalant, but her worries had surfaced again by this confrontation - at least there had been a small break before Darby exploded. Sabriel had scattered at the first sign of arguement.

That's what I'm worried about. Darby thought grumpily. To spare her poor friend's feelings, she didn't say it aloud. But heck. It didn't need to be said. The two sat without words after that, each unsure of how to go on, while Chin silently worked on her sandwich, feeling awkward.

The silence didn't last. Cain effectively ended the tender moment by peeking into the kitchen right then, curiosity overcoming all good sense. Normal looking except for the wings, one of the only normal people he'd seen set foot inside the house...he started to ask, then saw Darby frantically flapping her paws at him, and remembered, belatedly, her warning about visitors. Whoops! The sound of fleeing footsteps were all that remained of Cain, but of course it was too late.

Chin steadied herself. You couldn't properly choke a person until you were nice and calm. "Mind explaining who that was?" she asked, resigned.

"Who, him?" Darby twiddled her paws and looked at the ceiling. "Weeeell. You know we found this leaf..."

Little by little the story emerged. Another kid. Of course. And Darby was yelling at HER. This was the most complicated day she'd had for a long time.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 27, 2006 6:05 pm

It took a while before Cain dared venture downstairs again. "Pfft! Speak for yourself, pudgy!" A round of drunken laughter blasted out the kitchen door. Evidently the two had made up. "You might've laid off the mayo. How much more before you go and explode??" More guffawing. He worked up the courage to peek inside, only to find...the two 'ladies' seated around the table, not a drop of alcohol in sight. The strange girl who'd come over that morning was in possession of an absolutely enormous sandwich that she kept trying to bite but burst into a fit of hysterics every time she tried. Ah. Two girls together, drunk or not, were giddy idiots. He filed this away for further thought.

Unfortunately they'd spotted him, and Darby waved him over with a paw. "Hey, Cain!" she chirped. "You want to meet Chin? She's okay after all. Well..." Exchanging a look with Chin, she rolled her eyes and smirked. "Maybe not." The boy reluctantly shuffled in.

"S'nice to meet you." He put on his best formal voice. When he held out a hand to shake, Darby leaned in and whispered something that had to do with 'told ya he's shy'. Cain frowned a little, deciding to let it go. He was not shy! He liked to make a good impression. Some people could mistake anything. Shaking the hand, he found it a little hesitant but pleasantly free of talons or anything like that. Strike one against the ciel again - so much for her being an evil, vengeful creature who would murder at the sight of another kid - she might even be nice!

He remembered the earlier shouting. Taking a seat (he could barely see over the table), he studied her curiously, unaware that she was doing the same, taking in with interest the ice blue eyes and white hair. Chin coughed nervously. When she glanced at Darby, wondering why he wasn't saying anything, Darby just quirked an ear and shrugged. It was a Cain thing.

"Um. Sooooo." She rubbed the back of her neck, smiling faintly. "Darby tells me you're friends with our little bloom? That's good to hear. Sabriel wasn't all that nice to it." And so on and so on. Neither of them let on that he'd been the source of an arguement, and Chin was nothing but nice, even though he was a bit too quiet for her to be comfortable. He obligingly followed while they toured the house and was left alone after that. Later on he found out just who Sabriel was. That satisfied one of his questions - the other he asked Darby in an offside while Chin was sleeping. "Did she eat a watermelon? Wouldn't that hurt?"

He didn't understand why Darby burst into laughter."She's going to have a baby! See, when it gets even bigger it'll eat its way out of her tummy and then you'll have a brother or sister. Won't that be delightful?"

Dear Baby,

Good morning! How are you? It's turning out to be a stay in bed sort of day for me. The kind where it's warm and nice inside, and you can hear the rain drizzling on the roof while you curl up with a book and a stuffed octopus and fall asleep halfway through. I wish there was some coffee around, though...or a sandwich. Darby's full of it. Those sandwiches are the best on earth. Last night she actually tried to force peanut and jelly on me, and you know what? I didn't sleep at all. It's raining. See, bad things happen when you do things like that.

Cain's still terrified of you. Not only that, he's been spreading the rumor among the other kids that you're a horrifying stomach eating monster. Anyone older has this habit of smiling oddly whenever they catch wind of that rumor (especially if they have kids).

But I LIKE my tummy, so don't you DARE turn out to be a monster. Actually, speaking of Sabriel, he's been having the time of his life. Torment Tenebrion, tackle Cain when he's coming around the corner, plenty of other troublemakers to conspire with...in other words, he hates it here to death and would love to go back to HQ where he can be his happy bullying troublemaking self without anyone stopping him. Isn't that too bad, Sabriel?Thylassa's probably the happiest she's ever been. What a cutie. We haven't been to see Gullien or her in a long time...we should, sometime soon. That'd be great.

Huh. I could've sworn you just mov -- no? Okay then.

Well, most everything is ready now. Darby was nice enough to set up Aramae's old room with all our stuff, like the new crib and the dresser and a collection of plushies that's simply mind boggling - you're already spoiled to death! She did this all in secret, so I had no idea until she showed it to me with all the formality and sneakiness the occasion required. Despite being a grump (and complaining about my eating habits) she's a true friend. Anyways, everyone has a right to be grumpy once in a while. She just takes it to the extreme. I still love her, though.

Surprisingly enough, that's about all that's been happening, besides the little everyday things like the weather getting warm, the flowers blooming, the peepers singing at night, which is a welcome change from winter. It's also getting closer and closer to the day I lose my feet. That's a little depressing. But you know, it's not like it's such a big deal to see your feet after all, especially when I'm exchanging it for a better reason - you! Feet are overrated. So are good sleeping habits. And normal food. ...yes. Very overrated.

So now I'm going to indulge in good sleeping habits, overrated as they are, and try and take a nap with a book or something like that. Hope you like fantasy! wink

Lots of love,
Chinny

"Yaaaargh! Die, foul canine!" the octopus screeched. It smacked a dog plush upside the head, knocking it off the bed and out of sight. Chin reached for it, decided it was too much effort, and leaned back instead against a tower of pillows. Hmph. Okay, she was really bored. It was true. She needed something to do; everything was eerily quiet, as Darby and other 'responsible' adults had taken all the kids out for a day at the zoo. Hopefully no kiddies would try and pet the 'pretty black kitty' or the 'funny winged kitty' for their own good. Chin could only hope for their safety.

Leaning over to inspect the novels at her bedside, and seeing nothing good, she sighed. There was a baby names book sitting there. Hm. That counted as something to do, didn't it?

Darby: From a surname which was originally from a place name meaning "deer town" in Old Norse.
Cain: Means "acquired" in Hebrew. In Genesis in the Old Testament Cain was the first son of Adam and Eve. He killed his brother Abel after God accepted Abel's offering instead of his.
Sabriel: Sabrina, Sable, Sacheverell...nope, not here.
Tenebrion: A beetle!
Luciel: After a looong list of related names...Saint Lucia was a 4th-century martyr from Syracuse who had her eyes gouged out. ...yikes.

This could be proof of a short attention span. Hastily she flipped the pages, once she caught herself, and started seriously looking. Daphne was pretty for a girl...Meera, Nekoda, Oliver...wow. This was actually fun! Enchanted, she leaned back in, even pulling in a notebook to keep track of favorites. The afternoon fairly flew, leaving her puzzled when the group finally returned with the sounds of pounding feet and shouting. In fact, the only time she looked up was when Darby walked in, on her last legs and ready to collapse.

"What, home already?" was the thoughtful greeting. The ciel tossed her a dirty look and wobbled back out. Chin shrugged, reburying her nose in names. Guess they didn't have much fun, then...

Eggie explosion! Fear!

Quote:
Dear Diary,

My birthday was last Sunday. Darby got me this lovely sunshiney patterned dress that I love to pieces. It's too bad I can't really wear it right now. Of course, she also got me a set of earrings proudly bearing the joys of motherhood - diapers, bottles, binkies and all sorts of cheerful stuff. Ha, ha. Thanks a lot (not!). Most of the other presents aren't even going to me. They're going to him, or her, instead. We don't know yet - only that they're happy, healthy, and growing. I want to be surprised. wink

I just realized something. It's Mother's Day, isn't it? PLEASE don't let anyone tell Sabriel that. He'll probably put spiders on my pillow or something and call it a 'present', and then Tene'll cry because he hates spiders, and Cain won't know what to do because he doesn't want to get near the evil baby, and then Darby'll call all of my 'real' relatives and make them come over for a crazy dinner. It sounds mean of me...and maybe it won't happen...but that's the way our holidays usually run. That description is born of experience, not catastrophizing.

I have to make a list of all the other moms in the house so we can go seek refuge...that's Tortilla and Darby and me, basically. Does Eirwen count? She's had enough experience with it, being in the Meadows for so long with all those countless chicks. We'd have to take Pidge (Tortilla's daughter) along since she's so tiny and can't be away from her 'mom' for long. I looove her - she's adorable. And she squeaks! Squeak! Squeakkk!

Anywaaay. Er. I'll go hunt them out and we'll celebrate Mother's Day our way. This is gonna be fun. >D

Chin was fast asleep. Head pillowed on an arm, the other draped protectively over her stomach. Darby chuckled a little, knowing she'd been up the entire night before between Sabriel and the baby, and was surely exhausted from having to get up and go to the doctor before making up those precious hours.

Heck, let her sleep. The ciel tapped their cabbie on the shoulder. "Let's drive around a bit more." she suggested. "Take us to Starbuck's, maybe?" The woman looked surly, but only grunted, "If you'll pay for it." and spun the wheel round, rolling them up a different road.

She was still asleep when the cab dropped them off near the house. Darby nudged her friend awake with a cold nose and guided her out onto the sidewalk, letting her droop down and lean on her back as much as she wanted. It was only when they were fully on the sidewalk that Chin gave a little gasp and blinked alert again.

"I think..."

"What?"

"I think you should call that cab back." she whimpered, sinking to an awkward sit on the pavement.

Oh. CRAP. "Here, take this." Chin stared at the coffee cup Darby shoved in her hands, still in a blank, terrified state as the feline ran after their cab. There was a squeal of tires in the distance and a long, loud shriek of anger. Something had gone wrong. Darby came trotting back up, wings fluffed in her rage. "Wouldn't stop." she growled. "Total jerk, that driver."

"So sing at school," sang Darby.

"Sing at play," Chin cried.

"Sing some melodies every day!"

"Soon you will see-"

"Diddly-di-deedee-"

"It's a Melody!" they both sang, much to the baby's delight. She clapped and gave a happy little burble, rolling over on her belly to snatch Darby's tail, which was swinging along with the music. Darby gave a squeak, but all the baby did was cling, not tug or gnaw.

So this was what her life was like, mostly. Lots of joy. For the baby, anyway. Chin was another story; she'd been a nervous wreck the first few weeks, and then Melody got a bit sick on day and almost got rushed to the hospital. But she was normally very quiet and very good, which was what the anxious mother needed.

Sabriel. Now he was another story. Melody's dark, almost pure black eyes caught movement at the doorway to the room, and blinked. Unnoticed by the two ladies, she went quiet, and stuck Darby's tail close to her mouth, sucking on the furryness of it. Sabriel sometimes came in and glared at her. Or he pinched her, but never when anyone else was around. He didn't do any more because he didn't want to get caught and kicked out of the house, but he did want to accomplish something: make sure Melody knew he did not like her.

The shadow moved on after a moment. Then the room was bright again; Darby and Chin launched into a second song, making her giggle with pleasure and forget completely her moment of worry.
