A few hours later, her eyes fluttered opened. It hadn't been a serious injury by any means, nothing like what Dakota had inflicted upon her. In fact, it wouldn't have hurt most hunters, but Ami's FEAR shield was shoddy, and Otto had grown quite a bit stronger. Above all else, Ami didn't blame him. She would never blame Otto.
She found Otto there, and she wiped her eyes, trying to clear the fuzz and fog that clouded her vision. "Well done, Otto," she applauded, rubbing her sore head. She had a bit of a headache, but nothing that wouldn't go away with an advil or two.
"You threw me quite a distance there," she said, head tilted lightly as she rubbed.

"Oh good, yer up." He murmured as he sat lazily in a nearby chair. Sure he could have just left her n the infirmary alone, but it didn't feel right. He kind of cared what happened to her, and if she was okay.
"Yeah, well, I been doin' this a while." He replied in an even tone, leaning his elbows on his knees. "How's yer head?"

Ami shook her head as if to say "I'm fine, no problem," but as her brain banged against the side of her head, she realized that wasn't quite her response. "Ahhh, I think it will be fine." It just needed a night of sleep, that was all.
Changing the subject, she said, "Ahh, well your arm isn't the only thing that has changed, is it? I see you've got a new coat." A light smile. She was kind of proud of him, honestly. Otto deserved it.

"Yeah, got promoted." Otto replied in a murmur. He was proud of himself too, but the teen didn't much care to boast about it. It also didn't feel like he'd grown stronger by fighting with someone who was weaponless. Maybe if it was someone more seasoned, he'd have felt it.
But he wasn't about to knock down Ami's compliment with these thoughts. As blunt as he was, there was tact there every so often.
"Any word on when yer weapon'll get fixed? I mean, yer good with the guns n' all but.."

Ami gave Otto's arm and affectionate squeeze, but didn't say any more on the subject. Otto was humble and Ami didn't care to shower a person in praise, thinking it was spoiling them.
A darker look came across her face as Otto was about Junpei. The smile faded from her face completely. "No." There was never any word. Absolutely no way to gauge if she was "healing" correctly. "Dr. H said it would fix on its own ... if at all." Yes, he had included that there was the risk of Junpei never returning at all. After so many months, Ami was beginning to grow desolate, thinking he might never come back. It had almost been half a year now.
"I have to prove ..." How did Dr. H phrase it? "That I'm not ... subpar." A glum look at her friend. "But how do you prove that without a weapon?" Her voice cracked, revealing how pitiful she felt about the whole thing. It was a mess. Just a mess.

"I don't think.. yer worth comes from the stuff you can do better than others.." Otto murmured, rubbing his arm. "S'more like.. what ya do with what yer given, and the strength of your character. M'not really sure if that makes sense but.. theres some people on this island I'd rate as subpar, even if they're the best fighters, or the smartest. So rather than focus on your weapon, or lack of weapon.. just focus on your strengths?"
If anyone told him that, he'd feel even worse. So, he tried to think of what made Ami above par.
"For example.. you're level headed, and down to earth. Ya won't flounce about when s**t needs to get done. I think all ya gotta do is keep confident, and don't give up when things get lousy."

Ami blushed something fierce and looked down at her bed, eyes keenly focused on her blanket, the walls, anything but looking at Otto.
"If you say so," Ami stuttered, not denying nor affirming his statement. It was funny how he was telling her not to give up when she'd given him the same advice not a month ago. "I ... thank you Otto, those are very kind words."
She started to move, considering none of the lifers particularly cared about her (she was only a patient with a wee head injury, nothing serious like a dragon bite or something). "And I think you make a fine death hunter. Congratulations, really."

The praise was taken quietly; a light nod, with a subtle glance away. He'd never really considered himself kind. Ami was one of few he'd put decent effort into helping. It was the least he could do, as far as he knew, for being a friend.
"Well.. as long as yer alright. I'll be gettin' outta here." The teen murmured, getting up from his seat. "Text me if ya wanna spar again. Just be smart and use the damn safety word next time."

Ami nodded quickly, and said, "Yes, yes be on your way." With her feet out from under the covers, she tried to stand up so she could get out of this stuffy infirmary cot as well.
"Next time don't knock me out before I can say it," she said with a smile. Oh Otto. You are Ami's favorite, you just don't know it.
