It was a powerful feeling, being able to hold Ellie in place, even for a few moments. For the first time, Irene felt like she had the upper hand, and she liked it. She liked being able to control a situation. She didn't have any grand delusions of being a leader or running the team, but she wanted to be seen as an equal, and now she finally was.
The power rush was so intoxicating that Irene didn't listen to most of what Ellie was saying, but the mention of ********* snapped her back to reality. Thinking about ********* hurt. She knew that she had said some hurtful things, but she had also been hurt by the guardian's inability- which Irene saw as unwillingness- to help her with a real problem. "********* promised to help me, but when it came down to it, she wouldn't!" Not couldn't, but wouldn't. Irene truly believed that she had been betrayed, and that flaw in logic was what fueled her actions now.
"So I've helped myself." And it had worked, she wanted to say, but Ellie was taunting her, saying just the opposite, and Irene, already dangerously close to losing what remained of her polite demeanor, snapped. "I have gotten better!" Wrenching on Ellie's captive arm, she pushed her captain to the ground, straddling her and putting her hands on the taller girl's shoulders. "I am strong! Why can't any of you see that?"

Even now, with the situation suddenly shifting to something where Ellie should have seen herself as a victim, the blonde refused to sink into any sort of panic. She had been in fights before, and she had been taken down many times.
However, it was growing increasingly clear from her spot on the ground with the purple suited senshi on top of her that Irene didn't understand things still. She could get as excited and upset as she wanted, but the fact still remained that she didn't understand everything she thought she did.
And Ellie, unfortunately, was not going to sugar coat it.
"It isn't that ********* wouldn't do it, Irene! The cat flat out couldn't do it! I had my suspicions, but yer jus' provin' the theory, ya f*ckin' brat! That cat came t'me practically in tears because she couldn't help you! She thought it was completely her fault, and it wasn't, Irene! That cat would do anything fer ya! Hell, fer any of us in all honesty! Accusing her of holding out on ya... my f*ckin' god! Grow th'f*ck up!"
With an indignant huff, Ellie finally scoffed out "You don't know what it takes t'rank up, Irene! Strength ain't 'bout beatin' up 100 people or monsters!"

Why was Ellie still yelling at her? Hadn't she proven herself by now? Wasn't she strong enough yet? Irene was almost in tears herself, from frustration and confusion, but she refused to back down. When faced with a problem, she refused to stop attacking it until it went away, in one way or another.
This time, Ellie was the problem. Doing what she wanted didn't help. Attacking didn't help. Ellie kept talking, saying things that Irene didn't want to hear, in ways that only made them even less palatable. "If strength isn't about beating people up, why are we here? Why did you make me fight the first time? That doesn't even make any sense!"
Irene had heard enough. She wasn't going to let Ellie keep harassing her. Now she was the one in control, and she could stop it. Her eyes drifted, as she looked for the most effective way to shut Ellie up, and lit up just a bit as she figured it out.
"Just... stop already!" Irene moved her hands quickly from Ellie's shoulders to her throat, and tightened her grip. If one couldn't breathe, they couldn't talk. She knew that from personal experience.

The situation had gotten much more dangerous for Ellie. If this had been a normal person holding her throat, there was a chance she could have gotten them off of her. However, this was a senshi. There was a very real chance of having her neck snapped if she wasn't careful.
Struggling wouldn't do anything. Instead, a pair of golden eyes narrowed furiously at the girl looming over her.
The words that somehow managed to wheeze out from her lips were strained, but they managed to get out.
"...this......... isn't..... you..." Her cheeks were already changing color from the obvious stress that the younger girl was creating for the blonde's breathing.

For all of about five seconds, Irene was content. There was no way that Ellie would be able to look at her as the same old Irene, not anymore. She had, beyond a shadow of a doubt, proven her ability. Everything she had put herself through over the past week had been worth it, for this moment.
Except that Ellie was still managing to speak, somehow. Irene frowned and tightened her grip, but the words themselves made it through. This wasn't her? So what, she was incapable of fighting, was that it? That might have been true before, but she was different now. Better. Able to shut Ellie up, to get her on the ground and... and...
Far too late, Irene saw what she was doing through eyes that weren't clouded by rage and despair. This wasn't a spar, and she wasn't trying to get better. She was trying to dominate, to prove her ability, just because she could. And Ellie was actually suffering for it.
What are you willing to pay for power?
At the time, Irene hadn't paid too much attention to Nickeline's question, but now it came rushing back to haunt her. She had thought that the two of them were alike in some ways, but that she had noble goals. Hurting her captain just because she was upset was not a noble goal. Yelling at people trying to help her was not a noble goal. Maybe she was like that girl after all, or maybe she was worse. At least the corrupted senshi had known what she was doing. Irene had been blinded by her emotions, deluding herself and lashing out at anyone who dared point that out to her. It was easy to see who was in the wrong when her eyes were truly open.
"I..." Slowly, Irene let go of Ellie's neck and pulled away. She had no idea what to say. There was no easy way to make this better. Deep down, she wasn't sure there was any way to make this better. Ellie had only been trying to help, and she had... she had... No, there was nothing that could be said, or done, to put things right. Not then and there. Irene staggered backwards, considering offering a hand up and deciding not to. If the roles had been reversed, she wouldn't want help from the person who had been choking her moments before. Apologies would ring hollow. She couldn't even bring herself to look at Ellie, knowing what she had done and hating it.
Instead, she ran, not looking back, not caring where she was going. Anywhere was better than being there, face to face with the evidence of her mistakes.

Her eyes were starting to pinch shut when the hands squeezing the air from her throat lifted themselves from her. The tomboy hadn't been crying, but her eyes had started to water a bit.
She immediately allow air to rush back into her lungs, coughing a bit in an effort to regulate her breathing back to normal. A mental note was made that Ellie definitely did not swing that way, since this definitely was not something that thrilled her.
Her hands went to touch the ache of her neck as she sat herself upright. Of course, by the time she was up, Irene had already fled. There were lots of thoughts upon what had just happened, and how things were going to be played out in the future.
Ellie wouldn't be able to catch up with the confused senshi. She only had one word to sum the whole situation up.
"...f*ck...."
