There are a couple young men at a table, the two of them drunk and somewhat disorderly -- one from Nipoor, and the other looking like a local giant of a noble -- but other than that, most of the crowd is older, boring, puffing and drinking and watching the girls in a much too-focused sort of way. If any of them would recognize him, it would be through his family: friends of his father, perhaps.

Not that they will. Not with him behind the lights. He can see them much better than they can see him.

"You don't like girls." It comes out slow, lazy, from behind him -- Ever still slouching against the wall, legs crossed at the ankles and his head tipped to the side. And it's not an accusation, just said with a shocking amount of certainty.

Zac shifted in his seat, glancing at ever and then away, looked back again frowning and then back to the girls. His fingers tapped on anything he could reach, fidgeting under the weight of the inconvenient truth.

“It hardly matters, I’m sure they will find me a suitable wife, and I’ll be expected to pass on the family name.” He shrugged. His shoulders sagged just a little as he said it. The idea of ‘breeding children’ as a duty was depressing somehow. Sickening, he was sure he wasn’t the only person who’d ever had to make that kind of… allowance to appear normal in the eyes of society. To at least –look- like he wasn’t going to go to hell for sins that he hadn’t committed, but that he thought, that he couldn’t help but think.

Zac is, in this, certainly the more common one; more men certainly compromise themselves for their family than run off to live on their own, giving up the allowance and title, the way Ever have. And perhaps he is also the wiser of the two. After all, right now Ever's vest hangs open and the shirt beneath is more cream than white, with one carefully stitched line near the hem of his pants. Worn and repaired.

He looks away, finally, eyes settled on the dancers again. "That's your choice, I'd say, but I'm sure there's those that would disagree with me. I'm not the best role model in the area of duty and respectability..."

“Perhaps I will be fortunate, and he will not find anyone he believes good enough to redeem the family name.” He shrugged slightly and glanced towards ever, eyeing the off color shirt, thinking about the fact that Ever had once attended the same school that he did.

“Perhaps I’ll find a wife who doesn’t fancy men.” He laughed softly at the idea. “Though I suspect they are hard to find if they haven’t already left the path of duty and respectability.” He mused quietly.

“Did you choose to… leave? Or were you cast out?” he asked carefully, quietly as he could. It was a legitimate if personal question, and heavily hung with his own fears.

It is something of a daring question -- from Zac, anyway. Others have tossed it out carelessly, either to dig at his pride or without thought somewhere between the sheets. There, Ever makes up lies. There he tells them that he told his father to go ******** himself, or that he dumped an heiress in public at a party.

Today, he fidgets. He shifts. He can't quite bring himself to like to Zac about it. "...somewhere between."

But that's not enough, is it. His eyes flick upward, ignoring everything now, hair tumbling down into his eyes, surprisingly still. "I had a choice, and I decided that a pretty girl and forcing myself to do my duty of an heir wasn't worth the rest of it."

Here, though, he licks his lips, still looking upward -- but a smile twitches across his mouth. "And maybe I thought I could do well enough without him, anyway."

Zac’s eyes are serious, deep and lost in thought, not –quite- seeing ever but looking at him all the same. There are more questions, you can almost see them half formed but being bitten back as he worries his lip like a school boy waiting to have his knuckles rapped. “Does that mean that you…feel you aren’t doing ‘well enough’?”

His brows raised, yes he wasn’t in the most…fashionable clothes but lots of people lived with workhouse jobs and worse. Surely it couldn’t be –that- awful. Then again, he was manor born and bred. This was the closest he had yet come to this kind of life. Naive, yes, but it was something he might need to know a great deal more about before he made some very important decisions that would impact his entire life.

Duty, or…could you call it freedom?

"Mm, better than a year ago." Lazy and somewhat self-effacing, this is Ever back to himself. Straightening, he reached out to catch Zac's arm again, to draw him back out of the way as the number came to a close and a handful of barely-dressed girls come brushing past them, close enough that the feathers hit skin, brush against Zac's cheek.

Ever himself steps past, the curtains closed, to gather up a handful of sheddings, moving at a trot across the stage and back again. He leaves it clear, hauling a chair back with him as he comes, prepared for whatever will come next.

"I'm not starving on the streets, at least." A raised eyebrow, but before Zac can reply another handful of breathless girls comes out. These are wearing more in the back, but less in the front, bosoms barely restrained by their tops. They give the two boys wings and looks before taking their places on the stage to wait for their cues. "...it's not bad."

“You get to live without… lying to everyone you know?” He said tensing as they brushed past him. He closed his eyes as the feathers tickled his cheeks, his heart pounded in his chest, nerves, people watching him, judging him… making assumptions about he and his companion. They might not know him but at the same time they could make a far better guess about him than anyone he went to school with.

“What do you think they’re thinking? Should…we, rather, should I go, to get out of their way? I’d hate to knock one of them…loose.” He cleared his throat and glanced towards Ever.

"They went through." He looks amused, eyebrows raised as he points through the alley, toward retreating voices. New girls on stage, now, and he rolls his shoulder in a shrug.

"It's their job, and I guess that's worse than what I do. Cleaning up after. Fetch and carry..." It's not embarrassed in the slightest, only touched with a hint of something self-mocking. Carelessly so. It's how Ever lives his life now. "They've only got one number, after, and then the place...well, it won't clear out, but I can."
PostPosted: Tue Dec 25, 2012 4:54 pm

Zac nodded thoughtfully, there was a moment where he pondered the idea of Ever out there on the stage, putting on a show for men, women…people paying to watch and touch. “What would you like to do?” He asked, automatically deferring to his companion, then realizing he’d done something his father would have frowned at, deferring to someone of lesser rank would be a good way to put it. He half kicked himself, but then let the worry roll off, he had more opportunities than Ever did in a way, money did open doors, so why not defer so long as he didn’t feel used. After all, he was abusing Ever in a way, or at least his company to satisfy, something.

"Now, or with the tattered remains of my life?" The words themselves are depressing, hold a sorrowful possibility to them -- but it is entirely countered by his tone, which is laughing, his head cocked and eyes on Zac's face without straying. Let the girls begin their dance, this one more of a bunny-hop, full of pleasant jiggle that seems to please the crowds, behind him.

He knows every step, anyway.

"Easier to answer 'now', I think. So. If it were up to me, we would go upstairs. I have a bottle of something under the bed."

Zachary looked shocked, or perhaps slightly horrified would be a good word for the expression that passed over his face at the words ‘tattered remains of my life’, there was a fairly strong possibility that was a strong swaying statement towards the idea of a sham marriage and ‘duty’, but a good push towards ‘upstairs’ and bottles hidden under beds as well.

He gave a sort of watery nod trying to push away the opening statement to the reply before managing an actual verbal affirmation of the idea. “Alright, upstairs then.”

The answer kindles a slow flame of genuine interest behind Ever's expression, drags a sudden smile across his face -- and he looks away, toward the dancing girls, to the mess back stage, to his job, and tries to decide if it's worth getting in a bit of trouble for immediate gratification. A year ago, two years ago, maybe, but now...

"Then I need twenty minutes. You want to wander while I finish up here? Or should I lock you in a trunk to keep you from changing your mind and running off?"
PostPosted: Fri Dec 28, 2012 6:02 pm

“I…what?” He blinked looking like he almost believed he might be locked in a trunk, possibly as though it might not have been the first time this had happened.

“I, ah…” He glanced around, straitening his coat. “Is there somewhere I should wander?” He looked around again like he was waiting for someone to step out from behind a bit of scenery and either throw him out or stuff him into a closet somewhere. Should he be changing his mind? Oh lord… he shuffled his feet and arched his eyebrows.
