Rep wanted him to snap, wanted him to break and cast the first stone, give him a reason to fight back, to escalate this and take a shot at Sasha's weakness, take a shot at getting to her in a way that he knew would work. He wanted to fight and he wanted to win. The calmness in the other man was mirrored by a sort of roiling feral tension in Rep, even idly seated on a table radiating a feline sort of self awareness there was no serenity. Something chaotic still moved under the surface of his every gesture, every shift of his expression.

Something like you. It stung but it was good, a masochistic sort of approval at the words, a compliment in awfulness.

"She is already like me." he purred. "She doesn't need me to twist her into what she already ******** is." He ran a thumb and forefinger along the scars either side of his neck. "As for my method, I already beat her till her body broke, had her at my mercy, tasted her lifeblood, her lips." He tilted his head to one side and grinned, as if speaking to a particularly adorable and naive child, absolutely patronising. "Naw, when I break her it'll be me getting into her, to the heart of everything she is, it'll be psychological, beyond flesh, bone and skin."

He might have been willing to let Wash leave then, run away from the thunderous and looming conflict that hung on the air like static, but he couldn't let his final words rest, patronising in themselves. Prayer. What a ******** absurd notion in their world where belief spawned nothing but vile and twisted creatures. "Who the ******** would you pray to? There's no god for what we are now."

He started in surprise as Tracey, normally silent when he spoke to other people suddenly laughed too, a shrill and cruel sound.

"Don't waste your ******** breath."

The irony of the comment wasn't lost on him, praying for the man who wielded a fallen angel - whatever that race constituted in Halloween - the man who called himself Repent and for whom the story of his life seemed to be that he never would.

He couldn't help it- Wash found himself immediately visualizing the scar that marred Sasha's otherwise perfect lips, a scar that had become so much a part of her as everything else. A mark he'd been proud of her for owning, making a part of her, and now...

The corner of his lip twitched, twisting just a touch with disgust. Had that wound been opened by this vicious creature's teeth, in the throes of passion? No. He wanted to lash out, more than anything - his hands clenched into fists around the little damaged tome, white knuckled. He wanted to summon Sally and cut down the man before him, lest he let more poisonous words pour from his lips.

But he didn't.

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. He bowed his head.

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name."

Breathe. Just focus on the words, and the rhythm. In, out. Calm. Don't picture his hands on her body, his lips against hers-

"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." Wash looked up at Rep, and this time he didn't bother to hide his angry grimace. He spat out the next words.

"For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever."

He paused, then rumbled, with a tone of finality, "Amen."

He had told the man not to waste his breath, but he insisted, and it was almost beautiful to watch. The words no longer made him feel patronised, instead he felt grand and powerful, a demon poised before some retreating and fearful soul. Tracey curled in on the thoughts, in agreement, twined up together in their feral and dark satisfaction of the situation. He noticed the way his grip on the book tightened, noticed the tension in every line of his body, and even as he recited the prayer, he edged off the desk.

Good people didn't abide with evil and Wash had taken up living in sin with a creature no different from whatever evils Rep himself represented. That sounded like hypocrisy to him. Wasn't that in itself a sin?

As the well rehearsed words flowed around him, dimly remembered from his childhood, he closed the distance between them, wandered up into Wash's personal space, near enough to make a direct threat of himself, not near enough for contact.

"Amazing how ******** hollow all that rings isn't it?" he purred, his voice low and dripping with an intentionally awful edge of seductiveness, he would be as evil as this man wanted him to be. "Those words won't help you protect your demon."

Wash's brow furrowed. He glared at the other man silently, unmoving, even as he could feel his foul breath against his face.

"Hollow for you, maybe." He believed. Even after all that had happened, all that he had done, and seen done to others; he believed. In her. In God. He could hold onto this one thing. Often times, his faith was all that was left to him; in the dark hours before dawn.

"Not my words, Mister Rep." No, not by a long shot. "May the Lord our father have mercy on your soul, 'cause I know I don't." He breathed out slowly, through his nose, closing his eyes for a second.

"I think it's about time you returned that book, now."

"Not just for me. One day you'll see how empty they ******** are, when you realise what you are trying to protect with those words and where she's going to drag you with her." And still, the other man didn't back away, didn't move out of range of him and it was so much fun. Wash was taller than him, this close it left him level with his neck, his eyes darted there and lingered.

"Souls." he corrected in an undertone, finally touching the other man to walk two fingers along his chest, aware of his revulsion at the proximity. "And so soon? Here I thought we were getting along so well."

Wash schooled himself to stillness. It was just a touch, he told himself. He wasn't hurting him. He could let him have this one thing, could accept this pain and torment, if it kept his hands off her-

"What is wrong with you, man?" He finally snarled, taking a half step forward. "Don't you have people who love you? People who care? How would you like it if I was to tell you I'd laid a hand on one o' your boys? Did you brag to them about tastin' her blood, her body?" Were they all such perverse creatures, or was it just him?

He vaguely remembered Harrison and Jordan, having fought alongside them. He remembered Julie. The prayer. At least one of them had been a believer, once. How could he say those words and then lie with the man before him? He took another half step, pushing his way forward, glancing behind the hunter and focusing on the door.

He needed to get out.

He let him. It almost boggled Rep's mind what the man before him tolerated. How much could he do before he got a real angry reaction rather than cold controlled reason? Finding out eventually would be almost as fun as tearing Sasha down. Almost.

"You should ask Sasha what's wrong with me." he said cryptically. His cold blue gaze flicked back to Wash's face as he spoke. The very idea of him having anything to do with his guys was so wildly absurd he couldn't entertain it, couldn't place himself in those shoes. "As for the guys. They helped me drag her unconscious a** to the infirmary. " It was a lie, only Harrison had. He wasn't sure at all about how Jordan would feel about all of it if he knew, not really - but it was a weakness he wasn't about to hand to Wash.

It was so tempting to just clench a hand in the other man's shirt, shove him back, stop him from leaving, make him snap, make him fight. But he had to look out for his own well-being too. If a fight broke out here with him as the instigator, he would die for his trouble. He knew it much too well.

He drew his hand back reluctantly, giving a magnanimous sort of smirk as he stepped aside, leaving the way clear to the door. He chuckled and snarled his smug challenge.

"Run away."

He didn't look back, didn't respond - just kept walking, right out the door.
