To her, wine was wine. It came with a buzz and either made her cough or not. This wine fell into the 'not cough' category and thus very fine. Alina didn't drink too much of it, a few sips at most. She leaned over to put the glass on the floor, with long arms it could be placed out of kicking range should she get surprised. Or he move the chair. Or - no, no conversation so it would be fine.
His hand felt warm on hers, though still much too thin to be healthy for Bereck. Alina squeezed gently, unable and unwilling to hide her slow, warm smile. "It would be interesting to Time it forward. It would make you a cradle robber with a young 'Crafter on your arm." She leaned down and pulled his hand up just a bit, wary of any injuries, and kissed Berecks knuckles with just a brush of her lips. She smiled. "Those are lovely words for reassuring me you don't mind the change in rear or hair there, dearest. Does that mean you wouldn't mind your hand there?"

"I could be persuaded that was a good idea; rather easily in fact," Bereck replied, holding her gaze as his smile crooked up at one corner again. "The second half that is, not the first; I have no desire to be the short old man with the attractive tall young girlfriend.... Though I'm sure if you had Timed it here I could quite easily have been persuaded to change my mind."
And he had gone off on a tangent to clarify an earlier point when she had been inviting hands to become reacquainted with rears. He needed to sort out his priorities. Pulling his hand free of Alina's Bereck slid his arm around her waist... and allowed his hand to wander a bit south of the equator. This was alright, wasn't it? Not that she didn't have really lovely glutes but.... He supposed it had just been so long since he'd done anything of the sort it felt a little odd. He found himself breaking eye-contact and quickly made himself look back up at her.
"So ah... it's been a while since we did this."

"I promise I won't be Timing it anywhere. One of the upsides to not being a dragonrider is that I don't have to worry about those things and you don't have to worry about me doing those things. Though it would be a rather good excuse for the last twenty years."
She contemplated that for a moment, a bit taken up on thought so she didn't realize that his hands started to go somewhere other than her hand. Alina blinked and laughed, half leaning to kiss him quickly on the temple. She liked being able to do that. One hand dropped to his arm around her, fingers curling against it gently.
"I didn't actually think you would," Her free hand touched his cheek gently, smile faded to soft affection. "But quite a while. I don't remember having my own office at the time."

Bereck's eyes flicked down again and his cheeks flushed slightly as she reached up to caress his face. "Well... it would appear that I'm full of surprises," he managed a little lamely after a moment, with a glance up and a tiny smile for Alina. To cover his abrupt shyness - awkwardness? Uncertainty? - Bereck had another sip of wine and looked for another topic of conversation. Ah, yes; she had given him one there.
"Yes, I think we were both still sharing with a couple of people at that stage," he said as he lowered his glass. "I remember Morok, do you? Tallish fellow with the desk opposite mine, black hair and eyes, insisted on humming and whistling the whole time. It's a wonder I didn't murder him before he transferred off to the Hall." When in doubt, complain about the annoying habits and failings of others.

It had been way too long since Bereck last blushed in because of her. He'd probably has reasons to blush in the past but, well, she didn't live in the past anymore. He sat in front of her with her hand on his cheek and face a bit pink. She smiled but removed her hand from his face to give the man some sort of peace with that. "It appears you are. I'll stop being awful."
He didn't move his hand, though, despite his flush. She took a bite of food and let him take his time getting back on track. "I remember Morok. He flirted a bit until he realized I would end him if he tried anything with me." Her nose wrinkled, one hand waving a bit of bread in the air. "You and your patiance are truly something to behold. Was his replacement at least somewhat tolerable? Adrine - you remember her? The red head, high voice - gave me such a hard time about you and Aleck that they ended up giving me my own office. It was rather lovely."

Bereck abruptly looked Displeased; lips pressed together and curving down into a grim line, eyes hard and sharp. "I remember her; did she?" He tried to think of something suitably poisonous to call her but words failed and instead he move his hand so that his arm was around Alina's waist again; he gave her a gentle squeeze. "You're worth a galaxy full of women like her," he said with a warm smile. Having had time to think he added; "And she was about as innovative as toast."

Alina shifted uncomfortably at his Displeased face, focusing in more on her plate of food. She was on her second m9outhful when he spoke and wrapped his arm around her. Alina leaned in as much as she could in her position, free hand reaching out to curve on his shoulder.
"Mm. I wasn't Weyrborn or a rider, gave up a perfectly good man, what sort of woman cries at being pregnant. The typical things idiots say." She shook her head slowly, fingers stroking at his arm quietly as she spoke. "Quite. She was never offered a job or mastery I think. I get vindictive pleasure from that."

Alina's hand would feel what scraps of muscle Bereck had stretched over his bones tense up as she spoke and his face went hard again, angry. While he had been busy convincing himself that Alina wanted nothing to do with him she had been alone, missing him just the same, and people had been treating her like that. It made him furious with himself once again that he hadn't had the courage to approach her, but it made him more furious at the world that was so full of people like Adrine. He knew he himself could be thoughtless, too blunt and yes just plain unkind because he was in a temper sometimes but that? Mocking somebody for fear was never acceptable, regardless of how ridiculous their fear might seem to you.
"Ignominy isn't punishment enough but I suppose it will have to do," Bereck muttered darkly, a slight gravel of a growl rolling through his voice; he would have tugged her protectively closer but that would pull her off the arm of the chair and onto him, and right now he suspected that would hurt. It would also spill his wine, which he remembered and took another distracted sip of. "If I'd known, I would have been hard pressed not to break her nose too," the healer added in the same edged tones; he was not by nature a violent man but some things, some people were just intolerable. In all honestly he knew he wouldn't have done it, he would really have wanted to; the only time in his life he could recall physically lashing out in response to anger alone had been the other instance he had just obliquely referred to.

She glanced at him from the corner of her eyes though it didn't do much with her eyes. Bereck looked fuzzy and thus less than frightening but she knew just what his expression looked like when set into a quiet anger. Her fingers crept up his shoulder to rub soft circles against the back of his neck.
"I wasn't upset at her like you're probably thinking," She said softly in an attempt to calm some of that growl quite apparent in his tone. "I was mad and took it up with the Master in charge at the time. From what I remember, he ended up yelling at her in a manner most unlike him. Someone like her wasn't going to make me feel bad for what I did and as much as I missed you, I don't regret what happened. Maybe for how it happened but not that it did."
She tugged gently at his hair, smiling a little bit more. "I loved you so much then, so you know. I never thought you'd ever hit anyone. And besides, she was unpleasant enough to look at without your fist putting it further into pieces."

"Well. I'm glad she was dealt with." Bereck started to relax a little with those gruff grumbled words as he reminded himself that all of this had been a very long time ago and, more importantly, that he had better things to do than think about idiots. "I loved you too, and I didn't either." A small, slightly tight smile and a bit more relaxation. "Have to admit it was satisfying though, and I wasn't even remotely sorry that he spent the next few months hurrying out of the way whenever he saw me."
Bereck sipped his wine again and the noticed that Alina had food and he didn't. Removing his arm from around her waist he stole a piece of cheese from her plate and popped it into his mouth with a look of satisfaction. He then frowned thoughtfully as he chewed; it had looked like a kind of cheese that had been common around Malvren but it didn't taste like it at all. A few a few moments the healer's vivid eyebrows rose and he made a small noise of approval.
"That's rather nice," he said once he'd swallowed, "I shall have to find out what it's called; I thought it would be something like a Namor Nutty, but apparently I was mistaken." Bereck was not always the biggest fan of surprises but that had been a good one.

"She may or may not have ended up with half of her paperwork mysteriously catching on fire shortly before she left," Alina murmured, taking a moment to study her nails as innocently as possible. "Poor thing. It took all of her quills and a few charts with her as well. Thank goodness they weren't anything more important than some very labor intensive busy work due later that sevenday. As a fellow Starcrafter, I felt absolutely horrible for her."
She shrugged mildly, snorting at his theft. "Good. I'm glad he learned at least that lesson. 'Don't mess with irritable healers with sick girlfriends'" She nibbled at some meat, mouth kicked up into a smile. "Sadly we're lacking Namor Nutty here at Trine but that will probably change soon enough. So many different people means different foods. I don't think you'll like that one," She pointed and then pointed at another with her knife. "But try that one. Or maybe I have your tastes mixed up from before."

“Oh? Really?” Bereck gave a sidelong smirky little grin. “Well that’s tragic, isn’t it?” The sly expression remained on the healer’s face as he took the piece Alina had indicated and he added; “I’m sure you can remember what I enjoy. I can remember what you like with excellent clarity.” Innocent statements? Yes. Innocent tone? Not quite so much. Innocent expression? Not at all. Bereck raised the piece of cheese to his lips and then sucked the end of his forefinger lightly, perhaps to get rid of some clinging cheese. This might have been somewhere approaching innocent if he hadn’t maintained extremely pointed eye contact.
She was right; he probably was as awful as she was.

"I know, isn't it? Thank goodness it stayed contained to her desk." Alina sighed rather over dramatically, her head shaking. She snagged up another bit of cheese for herself and had just started to sink her teeth in when Bereck made his comment. The starcrafter choked, her eyes widened when she realized that, hey, his tone. She knew that tone. Intimately.
No soft blush crept over her cheeks this time but a full blown red and she ducked her head in an attempt to hide it though her eyes didn't leave the hand-to-mouth thing going on. Couldn't if she wanted to.
"Oh," she said, voice soft. "I think you'll be surprised at what I do remember. In detail. It's not exactly one forgets over the years."

He had to admit to being a bit smug about that too.
Bereck's grin got just a little bit wider.
"Well we'll have to test that, won't we? I hypothesise that you're correct, but experimentation is the only way to prove it." Of course such experiments were going to have to wait for some time yet; he'd probably break at the moment, and he had to admit that he did still feel it was somehow right for them to get familiar with one another again before... well, before they got too familiar with one another.

"You are a horribly awful man, Master Healer Bereck." Alina laughed, one hand up to rub at her cheek as if it would keep the blush away. She busied herself by taking a bite of some of the meat all while attempting to keep the red at bay. It did not work. "Absolutely awful."
And she adored him never the less. She glanced down at him again after a long pause, cheeks having failed to fade. The star crafter paused and moved so her leg bumped against his gently, although not in the same area with their positions.
"With the experiments," she began, trailing off again. "Would you mind horribly if this were... if possibly.. it's been a long time, Ber. And I love you but... I mean. It."
Alina stopped. She failed at this. The best she could do was to wave a bit of cheese in the air.
