...Actually, yes. Yes that was pretty close to the way things were back in his day. He stayed quiet on the truth and merely chuckled. "Absolutely. This was before Jack was even born, mind." He held up his index finger matter-of-factly and winked a red eye, amused. In truth he was quite uprooted, but there was little good in dwelling on the past, and he couldn't properly go forward if he was always looking behind him.

"Anything and everything, my dear. Anything and everything." He answered truthfully, smiling to his untouched stew. He heaved a couple of shoulder-shaking coughs, but thankfully didn't lapse into an outright fit. "I was an Alchemist in my youth, and though I am a Sage now I am still quite interested in that particular art." This was something he had told every youth who bothered to ask him, and Hel was no different.

“Ah, I figured.” Hel nodded her head, and bought it. “Those must have been interesting times…and uh…that is pretty vague.” Hel frowned, and then looked concerned as Sal started to cough. “Ah…are you alright?” She reached out to rub his back…which was hard, considering it was buried under layers upon layers of laundry. “Do not keel over, okay?” Her tone implied that would be very inconvenient.

“An alchemist now turned sage, huh? Like…ah…chemicals and stuff?”

Sal waved his hand dismissively. "I am fine, child. I promise." A few lingering coughs and he was finished, dabbing his mouth with his already bloody scarf. "I have had this cough before your great grandparents were forming in their pumpkins. If I were to keel over as you put it, I would have done so by now." The thought seemed to amuse him though, and his chuckling was accented with a few small, easy coughs.

"Chemicals, yes. I have a particular interest in poisons and plagues, but chemical reactions have always been a lure for me. Potions as well, I do enjoy my potions."

“…I suppose it is too late to say go get it checked if you had it that long, huh?” Hel furrowed her brows, and then pat him on the back as he let out a few more coughs. “Well…keep an eye on it! Or else.” Or else…what?

“Oh…I see…” Hel nodded her head a bit slowly, and then got excited, leaning towards Sal. “Oi! Do you know anything about gases? Like…laughing gases!?” That Hel was bent on a laughing gas…and Hyde had yet to impart that secret yet.

Sal just smiled a patient smile. "Of course, little one." He assured her quietly, trying to keep her from spending unnecessary time worrying over something that nobody had been able to change. Not even his finest Alchemists could undo what he had done to himself. Even his attempts were futile.

"Gases? Laughing Gas." He repeated, first surprised and then thoughtfully. "I know enough about them." He answered vaguely, and then deflected the subject by gesturing towards the (still untouched) stew in his hands. "You know, cooking is a sort of alchemy; using ingredients to create something else."

Hel smiled as she was assured, but then realized what he had called her, and she scowled. “I am not little!” She insisted, furrowing her brow as she stared over at Sal. “…Oh!” She dropped her pout in favor of excitement. “You do!? Do you think you could teach me, then!? See, I had been harassing my mentor to teach me, but trying to get him to do anything useful in a timely manner is like…like…uh…well…not good!”

The ghoul looked down as Sal gestured to the bowl in his hands. “…Cooking…is like alchemy?” She repeated uncertainly, and her brows furrowed again. “…Uh…is…the stew not to your liking?” Her lips jutted out in a pout.

Sal merely continued on smiling as she pouted over his choice of words, but made no attempt to correct himself nor promise that he would stop. So far there had been only one creature in Halloween that made him drop his little nicknames, and he didn't intend on being so easily bullied into another.

"I will consider it, child." He promised vaguely, at least looking thoughtful enough on the subject. "Laughing gas is...very unstable. One wrong move and you have an explosive agent, not a chuckling one. It would be very irresponsible of me to teach you how without first seeing how advanced your skills are." He tsked lightly, shaking his head; silly ghoul, thinking he would just give her the information without any prior knowledge! Silly, silly little ghoul.

"Mmm? Oh, I am sure it is quite delicious, my dear." His voice dropped to a reassuring tone, and shifted the brew in his hands. "What would you be using the laughing gas for?" The conversation on food didn't quite interest him, as proven by how easily he brushed off the subject.

Cue more pouting from Hel.

Her brows furrowed, and then she looked even more excited. “REALLY!?” She cried, elated at the idea of laughing gas turning onto an explosive gas as well. “That would be amazing!” Yeah, yeah, irresponsible and what not. Hel was the picture of responsibility. Not. She looked down at the bowl, and then back up at Sal, and pouted even more. “Gramps!” She whined. “You have not even tried it yet!” Her feelings were going to be hurt if he didn’t, okay.

“Oh…trolling.” Duh. “See, I want to become a Trick or Treater when I graduate from Amityville, so having an arsenal of skills at my disposal is good. I can make a glove that gives beings beards when I slap them!” She grinned widely at him now. “But ah…see, I have another friend, who is like a brother to me, his name is Shun…and he never smiles or laughs…so I ah…” Hel looked around, as if Shun might appear at the mention of his name and slit her throat. “…I want to hit him with laughing gas just once.”

His thoughts were confirmed; now he certainly wasn't going to teach her how to make it. Not when she was so eager to blow things up. Sal sighed about it as she whined at him. So he was going to have to eat the mud pie. That was unfortunate, but he really didn't want the ghoul to throw another tantrum; her squalling was loud enough already, thank you. The horseman, ever-one to humor the children, fished a piece of meat onto his spoon and ate it, chewing thoughtfully to both taste it and to prove that he was at least trying it.

"Delicious, my dear." He informed her upon swallowing, and went right back to playing with his food. He wasn't a big eater, especially of Halloween foods. "Did you make this?" Hopefully that would appease her enough!

He wanted to ask what trolling meant, but he imagined he'd find out; this ghoul did love to talk. Her description of what she could already do made him grin, pondering the uses of a glove that slapped beards onto people. Fai would look fantastic with a beard. "I see, that should be simple enough. I will gather the materials and make it for you." He decided out loud, figuring that if she was so dead set on this, well, he'd handle the messy making it part.

It made Hel feel a bit better. Just a bit, when Sal tried a bite of her stew. She couldn’t help but keep pouting at him though, because it was obvious that he was…one of those. One of those that meant he didn’t eat a lot. “…Ya I did…You need to take care of yourself, Old Man.” Hel replied, turning her nose up into the air. “Afterall, you gotta live a long time and watch all us young folk graduate and go off and do stupid things like get married and have scarelings.” She paused, and then waved her spoon at him. “Not me though! So do not expect any great grand-scarelings out of me!”

She huffed, but then perked up. “Oh? You will make it!? I want to watch! I will help you gather materials as well! I want to learn!”

Hel actually had him grinning as she went on her little tiraide. He held a thin hand over his chest, right where his heart should be. "I take very good care of myself, my dear. I am in no risk of dying any time soon." He assured her, keeping his hand over his heart as if swearing on his promise. "I am still young enough to see your children grow up and have scarelings." A pause. "Ah, I beg your pardon, your friend's scarelings." Since she just insisted that she wasn't going to have scarelings or get married. "But why would you say that, my dear? Do you simply not want kids? Perhaps your mate's FEAR isn't compatible?" He was curious why she exempted herself; didn't all young ghouls dream of growing up and raising a family?

"...If I allow you to watch and help, you must swear to me that you will not attempt to recreate it with anyone other than myself." His voice grew stern, losing all warmth and mirth. This was something he was serious about; he wouldn't let little ones hurt themselves using the methods that only trained Alchemists or studied witches were capable of.

“Ya, so you say, Gramps…my thigh is thicker you are though…” She eyed him funny, and then dumped her empty stew container onto the nearby table, and picked up her mug of cider instead and took a drink. She was fine with his slip up and his amending statement, but it was the question about a mate that had her spitting out all of the cider in her mouth. Luckily all in front of her, and not on Sal.

“Ack!” The ghoul coughed. “M-m-mate!?” She echoed. “Ugh! I do not have one of those, okay!?” She made a fist and then slammed it against her chest. “Besides…I am the youngest of nine ghouls…that really destroyed any desire for scarelings…I have too many things I want to do anyways, and scarelings would just hold me back.”

Hel lowered her cup, blinking as she stared at Sal, taking in his rather serious tone. She nodded her head. “Ya! I promise!” She shifted the mug to one hand, and held the other one out to him to shake. “You have my word, and I do not throw that around lightly.”

Sal gave her thigh a long, thoughtful look. "Now, how would you know that for sure?" He challenged softly; all she had held was his arm, everything else was caught under layers and layers of fabric. Silly ghoul and her assuming things! "Your thigh is not as wide as you imagine it to be." The Sage tsked, shaking his head in brief disapproval.

"Ah, again, my apologies. Perhaps mate was too formal a term...a boilfriend? ...Ghoulfriend, perhaps?" There was a distinct difference between dating as scarelings and becoming mates as adults, he understood that. "Nine ghouls? If your sisters are anything like you, I have a large respect for your parents." Another soft chuckle and he too set his dish aside, this time picking up the cider to entertain her idea of hospitality. After all, she made him eat the stew; only the Priestess knew what she'd do for the cider. "Oh? And what is so important that you would throw away companionship and neglect the idea of a family?" Not that he disapproved of her plan at all; he himself was very career-driven with no love life or family outside of the imaginary bonds he had made with a couple of the students at school. It was somewhat lonely, and yet too busy to feel it.

Her promise however, seem to satisfy him a little bit. "Very well, perhaps when this damn weather clears, then." His answer was, as always, very vague. Without her prompting he sipped on the cider she had provided; liquids were more his speed, after all.

Hel grinned as Sal challenged her. “Because I have stared at your fingers and arm! It is a fair assumption, that my thigh is thicker than your mid section!” She slapped her said body part and laughed, but sobered up at the talk of boilfriends and ghoulfriends. “…Ah…” Her brows furrowed, and she ran her thumbs along the rim of the cups. “…No. I do not have either…heh.” She laughed again though at the mention of her sisters. “Would you believe I am ah…the most mild of them too?” She hummed a bit.

“…Companionship? Well…when you put it that way…I suppose I do have a companion…but ah…I just have so many goals and dreams I want to accomplish on my own…things that would not adapt well to the safety of scarelings…dangerous things…besides, I am plain selfish…I just want to worry about…me.”

She pumped a fist into the air though. “ALRIGHT!” She cried excitedly.

"Mmm, I see. Well, you will likely never be absolutely certain!" Sal informed her with an easy chuckle. He had no intention of undressing near her, or wearing anything other than his robes. Granted he did still have that suit from the Fright Night...he was rather fond of that suit. Perhaps he would start to wear it under his robes! He only tsked again when she told him of her sisters; no, he didn't believe it, but he assumed there would always be terribly hyper children in the world.

...She called herself selfish right after threatening him out of concern for his health and acknowledging that her plans were too dangerous for scarelings? That didn't make any sort of sense to the Sage, but he said nothing on that particular subject. "You are still very young my dear, you have all the time in your world to do what you want and to settle down if you desire." His thin hand stretched out, first lightly patting the top of her head and then petting his fingers through the back of her hair. "Is your Companion okay with your eventual leaving?" She did express wanting to be on her own.
