Well there was a tricky question. She peeled another shape from her roll-up as she thought about how best to answer without completely undermining the moral teachings of this kid's father. "Well, I guess I sort of fell into it?" She paused, lips pursing. "My best friends and I, we're not really from the best part of town, and when we were little we got a lot of s**t for it." Oops, swearing. "Genie,Jude and I, though Jude got it the worst. I hated seeing my friends getting picked on, so I defended them and myself." She left out the bit about enjoying it, he didn't really need to know that. "As we got older, I got better and better so I could keep them safe." There, that was a good response, right? It let Orin keep faith in his father's teachings, and also answered his question. "It depends on why you're fighting, really. If it's to protect someone, or in a boxing ring, then there's nothing wrong with it." He waggled the roll-up at him as she spoke. There was a pause she she could take a drink, then she continued. "It is complicated, but at the same time it's not. You fight to keep yourself, and others, safe." Thin shoulders rose in a shrug. Ok, so maybe she wasn't great at being a role model, but she was trying.

Orin was a kid who found it difficult to focus on one thing for a long period of time, but this? This was something he really wanted to know. It wasn't necessarily because he had any interest in fighting; he had very few people in his life he couldn't get along with and was able to laugh most things off.
He was just a boy, growing up and settling himself in the world. He hadn't gotten to the age where he wanted to impress girls or pick real fights. His eyes were wide with interest as Porsha spoke—even after she had cursed. "You sound like a real hero!" he decided, after a long moment of contemplation. She saved him—and her friends?
"Like out of a comic book! Are you gonna grow up and be a police officer or something? I bet you'd be good at it. Bad guys, criminals. Man, they'd scram if you were after them, I bet."

A hero? Po didn't really see herself that way, but considering she'd chased a bunch of bullies away from him she could kind of see how he'd come to that conclusion. If anything, the teen was an anti-hero, but she had enough moral scope not to explain the difference to young Orin. "Naw, I don't want to be police officer." She didn't really like authority much, be they teachers, parents, or law enforcement. She took another drink, then leaned on the counter. "What about you? You wanna grow up to be anything in specific?" That was probably a safer topic. Vaguely she wondered when Orin's dad was getting home, and what he'd think about a strange teenage standing in his kitchen, talking to his son. Kyuseisha no Hikari Should we think of wrapping this up soon?

Orin didn't seem to think twice about the stranger in his house; she had already cemented herself as a hero in his mind, and it wasn't like he was bringing home hoards of others kids to keep him company. Besides, his father would understand. Probably.
He shrugged in response to her question. "I think being a police officer would be cool. But I really like animals, so maybe a vet. Or I wanna just go work on a farm. Dunno. Dad says I should work hard to go to college, but he said it would be okay if I didn't, as long as I was happy, so. Probably the same thing all parents say. Except mine actually means it." He laughed, for good measure, apparently actually deriving some sort of amusement from the concept. "You should come by and meet him some time. He'd probably be really grateful. He always did say I should bring more friends over. So, you know. You're invited to come over and watch TV or eat dinner or something, sometime. You know. If you wanted."

On a strictly personal level Porsha wasn't a huge fan of the police, but that was because she wasn't strictly a good kid. Orin didn't need to know that though. "Did you know they branches of law enforcement that are set up for the sole purpose of helping animals?" She'd seen it on tv, damnit, that meant it must be true. "They're all about rescuing animals from harm and taking them away from neglectful or abusive owners." She blinked down at him when he suggested he meet his father, and actually went so far as to invite her back for tv or dinner, or just general hanging around. She wasn't sure why, but it surprised her, and it took a second for the smile to bloom. "I think I'd like that." She had friends her own age, so this had nothing to do with that, but this little kid had managed to endear himself to her. "How about I give you my number, and you can call me anytime, okay?"

Orin nodded enthusiastically, already a huge fan of this idea. "Sure!" he exclaimed, as if his vigorous nodding wasn't enough. Full of too much energy, he darted to a little pad and pen before thrusting them forward in offering. His mind very briefly drifted back to the concept of animal police; he had seen a handful of shows on Animal Planet, though it was difficult for him to invest himself in much other than cartoons at the time being. Things without flashy colors or musical numbers had to be really good to keep his attention, and animal cops had a bad habit of just making him sad.
Too Cute, though, that was another story entirely.
"I'll only call you at reasonable times! And you can tell me if I call too often," he assured. "Dad's given me a scolding because I used to call him too much at work, so I know I can be overbearing. I just like my friends, a lot, you know. Wanna let them know I'm thinking about them."
