He didn't answer at first, concentrating on the repetitive patterns of the music. Formulaic. Predictable. Controllable with the understanding of said formulas. A shift down to this chord here provoking one emotion while it would be easy to lift two fingers and turn a sour, pain filled chord into one of jubilation.
He left the fingers down.

Wash raised one eyebrow. "Is that so?" He couldn't keep a hint of amusement off his face.
"You think I swept the first little lady I laid eyes on off her feet?" He asked incredulously. "Just 'cause I tied the knot don't mean I don't know what it feels like t' get dumped on my a**." He sighed, running his hand through his hair. "It was my fault a couple'a times, too. People ain't somethin' ya jus' pick up on. You gotta get back up on that horse an' keep tryin' till somethin' sticks."

"But nothing ever sticks, Wash. I... I wa a virgin until I got here, and even that didn't stick. I've... I've changed, I've... I've gotten... gotten past so many hurtles in myself and I still..." He shook his head, stopping his playing entirely. "I don't... " He pursed his lips, rethinking his words.
"I'm worried about her." He finally sighed, brows furrowed. "I've... I've been down that road. Where you... you do scary things. Things that... that are dangerous to the people we love. I don't want to see her making the mistakes I did. I just hope... you can help her where I can't."

"Aww, come now, I don't think she's as bad off as you think," he replied. "She jus' gotta sort herself out. Ain't a matter of helpin'." Wash leaned against the doorframe, tired of standing. "She ain't quite the girl we used t' know, but she ain't all bad neither."

Jerry continued to scowl, the scars on his shoulder stinging at the memory of those insulting, angry fingers digging deep into their tender wounds. "Doesn't matter any way. She hates me. She made that very clear."
"I just... I wish you could just... turn it off. The way I feel about her."

He snorted, lowering the guitar. "It's too late in any case." He glanced up to meet Wash's eyes, "She's moved on."

He turned to go, giving Jerry a long, considering look. "It don't mean you can't still be friends."

The past tense was expected, even deserved but it still hurt. "O'course, man. I'm sorry things... worked out the way they did." For you. He'd enjoyed his time since that night on the beach, truly. Could he go back to the way it had been for him before? Maybe. He didn't know.

Jerry shifted, eyes out the window again, "I'm glad it's you." He said finally, hand gently tightening on the neck of his guitar. "It... m-makes it easier. I think. Knowing she's... with a good guy."
