Out on the training field again, Rep was acutely self concious. It was one thing to say he could do it, that it was no problem, it was quite another to go back out and summon Tracey again. All he could think about was the shatter of Rin's shield and that unforgettable and by now, much too familiar thunk of metal in flesh. Tracey interrupted this entire train of thought was a sweep of dismissal.

fine William. Remember what Allan said, it is a matter of control. Your Ace is tough, he can defend your attacks. Just take it slow.>

He took a deep breath and reluctantly summoned the axe without his usual confident flourish, letting the blade sink to the ground as he eyed Harrison pensively. It had to be done. The swing itself was cautious, careful and a precise as he could make it.

<need from him.>> he hissed to the fallen angel, feeling the familiar twinge of fear as the blow connected.

Rep's swing was slower than it usually was, more brushing than crushing. Harrison had been ready for his usual speed, but he compensated, stepping back and deflecting Tracey's tip.

B0nez glowed slightly at the brief contact between their blades.

Still at 100%.

Harrison exhaled. He liked getting hit about as much as anybody, and he stayed on his toes, ready to move for the next swing.

"That's one," he said.

It was awful, normally fighting was as easy as breathing, all bristling motivation and rage. Fighting like this was different, like trying to breathe manually, he was thinking so much about what he was doing that he found himself getting tangled up in gestures that were normally all impulse.

He tried to make the second swing another subtle and clipped deflection but went altogether too wide, Tracey hissing his frustration in his thoughts.

"My bad," Getting out of the way again was easy, with Rep pulling his punches. Dancing the balancing line was harder.

He twirled B0nez's shorter blade in his hand playfully, eyes not leaving Rep. "Gonna have to be faster than that."

"That a challenge?" Rep asked, his expression perking up a bit, relaxing from the desolate and anxious expression he'd been wearing the entire spar so far.

told you William, he can handle it. Stop being a baby.>

It was bad ******** times when he was being called a baby by a small and adorable fallen angel. He grunted and gave Harrison a grin. "You want fast, you'll get fast." He splayed his grip wide along Tracey's handle and this time swung out with a much more significant snap of force across his shoulders, the blade making its familiar whum as the serrated feathers rent the air.

Tracey said approvingly as more fear was split from the contact. It felt like static.

Harrison laughed as he was sent stumbling backwards, B0nez sparking as he clattered against the axe, and Tracey clipping a chunk of his shield. "There's the hits I remember. Damn. That's what you were chipping at those other guys with. B0nez says if he weren't so great at blocking, that's a 10% penalty."

Almost there.

"But uh, we're at 96%. ...One more hit oughta do it."

"B0nez must be ******** useful, for me I can only really tell how much power I've got by like.." he tried to describe the odd sense of strength, power and weight to his body, awareness that seemed to extend beyond his arm to the blade itself. But simple words didn't really do it justice. Just a little more, he knew it, but it was beyond correlating to numbers. Tracey was a different beast entirely.

He rode out the momentum of his initial swing, bringing the black steel back around to clip Harrison's shield, a steady confidence and grace returning. At even the glancing blow, the runes along Tracey lit up, bleeding off the way the always did like an after image. Somehow it felt better even than usual, it took his breath away for just a second, his voice quiet and dazed as he he said, "Charged."

The hesitance and fear of the power the charge held felt so far away in the wake of this thrumming power he could practically feel. Just holding it back felt like an insurmountable task.

"95," Harrison reported, the axe barely grazing his skin. B0nez ran hot with energy.

JUST HAVE HIM HIT. WE CAN TAKE IT. SYSTEMS AT THE READY.

"And yeah, I couldn't keep track of this s**t if I tried."

They didn't really need it, but Harrison took a bandaid from his tin anyway, for his and Rep's peace of mind. He didn't have as much control over the situation as he'd like to think- just some guesses, a coat that said he was from a division built for taking hits, and a working knowledge of Tracey.

He pressed down the adhesive with his thumb, then hung B0nez on his sash. The bandaid only gave B0nez a tiny spike. The ghost was concentrating elsewhere.

"Okay," he said, "I'm healed up. Go for it."

There was too much to focus on, the usual blur of one into the other muddied by worries, feelings, doubts, the familiarity of the mingled fear. The power was there, raw and coursing as always, but his mind wasn't entirely on it.

do it.> Tracey practically snarled, not used to being denied these days.

He obliged, even as he lined up and charged, feeling something about his rhythm was off. He leapt, the usual almost impossible height, and brought the axe down hard. As gravity seized him and pulled him down, he knew he was going to miss, but there was nothing he could do about it, trajectory too far, the twist of his shoulders as the blade hauled him mid-swing excruciating even through the fear shield.

He didn't hit the ground gracefully, the impact knocking Tracey clear out of his hands as he did what could only be described as a faceplant directly into the dirt. When he stopped skidding he flopped over on his side with a slow exasperated sigh of defeat.

"Th...that..went well."

The dust cleared, with Harrison unarmed and standing in the same spot.

Rep had made a miniature crater for himself, and Tracey was buried in the ground.

"0% damage," Harrison reported dutifully, before pressing B0nez's longer blade to Rep's chest. There was a jolt as electricity raced through him, laced with something dark but at home in Rep's skin, before sizzling out and leaving behind a charged feeling that was different from the energy ping pong they'd been playing earlier.

"We'll rest a while, until Tracey's ready for another one of those."

He withdrew B0nez, and offered Rep his free hand.

Heals were always varied depending on who they were applied by and the means. Bandages to a shield tended to feel cold and clinical, a spike of raw mending. Fear heals were something altogether more personal. The energy was familiar, tinged with that tinny static edge. "I'll do better next time hopefully."

He took the proffered hand with an apologetic smile and got up, scratched and scuffed but intact, the scrapes were nothing Tracey's remaining shield couldn't handle. It was a pity said shield did a grand total of nothing for his pride.

"But aye man. A break sounds nice."

They waited for their shields to recharge over lunch, but by now they were both used to it. Their adventures through the Titan's underwater prison had been mostly waiting.

Harrison had lived close to a cheap, local amusement park, and his buddies from the baseball team always called it going on the Line Ride, making asses of themselves every time the line rounded a corner.

So, in good company, the waiting was okay.

Harrison munched on a rectangular, frozen pizza.

"I don't spar much," he admitted, "But that was like- I dunno. Good, sometimes. Not the getting hit part, but..."

Rep felt like a bit of an idiot for a while after they came off the training field. He'd wanted to impress, but at the same time, the idea of striking Harrison ran counter to all his natural instincts. Even now so long after the sahara there was that lurking anxiety that somehow hitting him would annoy and upset him, even when all logic pointed to the contrary. He'd come up with the idea - it didn't make one iota of sense that he would be bothered by it. Still, the fact remained he'd mostly made a complete balls of it.

He barely paid attention to the chips he was eating, on autopilot as far as food was concerned.

He was about to go off on a tangential rant about the decor in the cafeteria when Harrison spoke up, but quickly re-railed his train of thought, waving his fork enthusiastically.

"Aye! Aye man! Like. I was meaning to even like. Ask when we got out of the fight. Like. I mean, I spar all the ******** time right. But like, sometimes it felt weird, not even bad weird but good sort of. " He lowered his voice again as he got his enthusiasm in check. "I made an arse of aiming, but it was like only half down to not being used to hitting you, I was like distracted by it."

He scratched his chin thoughtfully with the handle of the utensil. "It was hmm. It was like I could feel b0nez? Like. Even though you weren't hitting me."

"Yeah. When Tracey and B0nez hit. I could...not taste it, that's the wrong ******** word, but like, almost, you know? I definitely, uh, felt it, it was like...being uh, like mixed up. With you and him."

Harrison tried to articulate it.

"Like normally B0nez just gets louder, kind of excited. And sparks start jumping everywhere. But the electricity was kind of like- real dark, and heavy, and sweet. Like some kinda wine, maybe, because I was feeling buzzy off it. And even when I started getting heady, I wanted another drink. Sort of. I don't know. Intoxicating. But good."

There was relief as Harrison agreed with him, a reassurance that he probably wasn't going crazy, that the effect went both ways. "Naw, naw man I know what you mean, it was sort of like - aye almost tasteable." He'd never really considered that fear would have its nuances, that it could reflect your opponent, but he'd never really paid attention to it either, always so focused on simply winning.

"B0nez was like.." he waved his fork thoughtfully again as he tried to find words that fit around senses language had never been designed to fit. "Like the way electricity would taste if it could. Sort of tinny, static. Like when the air's heavy before a serious ******** thunderstorm. But it was good, definitely, good enough to distract the hell out of me for a start. And the heal was like, the same but even more intense. Mixed up is a good word for it."

He took a bite of his food, finishing it thoughtfully before adding. "I'd never noticed it before, but I guess before I like, wasn't paying so much attention to the fear itself."
